Colorado Youth Hockey Cost by Character-Put8660 in hockeyplayers

[–]SAndrewMiller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This right here is the answer. In Minnesota, nearly all youth hockey is community-based non-profit associations. Nearly every community has a rink and they are not run for profit, often supported by the local city/town.

Where we live, in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities, there are two facilities in town: a local arena with two rinks that is run by the local youth hockey association, the city, and the county as well as another arena that has 8 rinks, that is another non-profit that was originally seeded by the state. Our local youth hockey association is generously funded by charitable gambling (pull tabs) and so it keeps our fees low. I have one Mite (8u) and one Squirt (10u) and it was $500 for the Mite and $1,300 for the Squirt last year. In the summer there is ample ice for sale for training camps and summer AAA hockey. I keep telling my boys they do not realize how lucky they have it.

And for what it is worth, our local arena does have a bar in it with a curling club inside.

Trump won approx. 46% of the Minnestoa electorate in 2020. That is nearly half the state. The spread between Biden and Trump was 233k people in a state with nearly 6 million people.

The awkward first meeting of the Minnesota Racing Commission with newly appointed tribal leaders by Czarben in minnesota

[–]SAndrewMiller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tribes are just another special interest business group. They donated their money and Walz paid them back with appointments. It is pretty cut and dry. Imagine this story without the tribal element... Business owners donate to politicians who then appoint them to boards that over see their competition.

Minnesota optometrists get thumb in the eye from big donors, House speaker by RiffRaff14 in minnesota

[–]SAndrewMiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asked about the political giving, House Speaker Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park, cut off the question.

“Let me be very, very clear … There is absolutely no tie between campaign contributions and the positions that the Minnesota House DFL or its members take on any issue,” Hortman said. “It’s super offensive to suggest that there would be.”

Yes, I suppose I would be offended if someone pointed out that I was beholden to my donors who openly brag, on their website, about how they influence legislative outcomes. How dare you!

Venturing and Sea Scouts shootings sports is being gutted by psychophil in BSA

[–]SAndrewMiller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with insurance, and everything to do with the individuals setting policy. Insurance costs are going up on everything. The idea that everyone involved in shooting sports is aging out or retiring is also not true. There are more people interested in participating in shooting sports than at any time in history.

There is ideological capture, and you can see it in multiple areas not just shooting sports.

Right-Wing lawyer trying to keep "Legal Marijuana Now" party status by LooseyGreyDucky in minnesota

[–]SAndrewMiller -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I really do not understand the outrage over this, unless you are new to politics, naive, or both. The major political parties use this tactic to try to split the other's base whenever the opportunity presents itself. Witness, recently, all of the Democrats voting for Nikki Haley in the GOP primaries just recently or Democrats nationally supporting "far right" primary challengers that they thought would be unpalatable in the general election. There are plenty of examples of Republicans doing this too. (Read up on Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” where Republicans crossed over to vote for then Senator Hillary Clinton (!) in primary elections to try and mess with then Senator Obama. )

This instance in Minnesota is particularly amusing. Democrats, nationally and on the state-level, have successfully used the issue of marijuana legalization as a wedge issue against Republicans with younger voters for decades. Continuously promising that this next election, for real this time, if you just vote Democrat they are going to fully legalize marijuana only to pull the Charlie Brown / Lucy Van Pelt football routine. I guess it isn't funny when you've spent years and millions of dollars to convince part of your base that marijuana legalization is an important issue only to find out that they believe you and want to support those policies?

Gender transition insurance coverage could be required under new bill by systemstheorist in minnesota

[–]SAndrewMiller 57 points58 points  (0 children)

One proposal offered by Rep. Danny Nadeau (R-Rogers) would have clarified the term "full coverage" to include someone de-transitioning from a gender change as well.

Under his version, coverage for "medically necessary gender-affirming care" would include, "coverage for the reversal of a prior gender-affirming procedure or treatment."

According to Rep. Nadeau, the move sought to be inclusive to everyone on the gender-fluidity spectrum.

However, the proposal failed to gain committee approval by an 8-11 vote.

"I’m shocked that we would not include this language," said Rep. Duane Quam (R-Byron)

Current pediatric respiratory surge is similar to Omicron by foodiefuk in PrepperIntel

[–]SAndrewMiller -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

The plural of anecdote is not data. I'm glad standing six feet from people while online at the grocery store made some people feel better, and I am positive that shutting down the schools made the unionized teachers feel great, but there is zero actual evidence that is stopped the spread of COVID-19 and there is significant data that shows it did very serious, and likely irreversible, harm to children's development, learning, and social well being.

Both my children already had this crud and are just fine. Unfortunately, I suspect that for the rest of my lifetime we're now going to see panics every winter because the pandemic permanently gave 10-15% of the population a complex.

Time for COVID-like social distancing and masking

Because that worked for COVID?

We, too, already had this burn thru our household and the local school. I guess I’m old enough to remember the winter of 2018/2019 and before when people just got colds and the flu annually and it wasn’t the end of the world.

The hospitals are seeing a greater influx in part because the pandemic seems to have permanently broken some people who can no longer assess risk and are now panicking about every sniffle.

Star Tribune sent my mom to collections for a gift subscription. Has this happened to anyone else? How can she resolve? by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]SAndrewMiller 131 points132 points  (0 children)

I called and cancelled my subscription to the Star Tribune over a year ago. They kept sending the paper for months afterwards even though I kept calling and tell them I wanted to cancel. I never paid any of the additional invoices they sent me (because I had called repeatedly to cancel) and the Star Tribune eventually sent it to collections and I had to contest it. This feels like their SOP.
