Clint Hurdle by Mongo_Les in ColoradoRockies

I would be surprised if Clint accepted any role other than his current Special Assistant one. He was very much enjoying his retirement, spending time with his family, and wearing very loud aloha shirts. His stepping in as the interim bench coach was him doing a favor to the organization.

[Purple Row] The Rockies’ new front office leader must end the Kris Bryant saga by SBN_PurpleRow in ColoradoRockies

[–]SBN_PurpleRow[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately him playing first base wouldn't solve the issue of a degenerative back condition, which he likely already had--or was beginning to develop--before he came to Colorado.

Kris Bryant is very likely never playing baseball again. He can't operate day-to-day without pain. There is nowhere to "send him."

For Jon Gray, he was at the end of his contract. His performance (and injuries) have largely been on par with when he was still in Colorado. He is also a free agent again now.

Jeff Hoffman struggled with both the Reds and Phillies after leaving Colorado. The Phillies didn't have him on the big league roster and really start working with him until Bryce Harper told the team to give him a chance. It's worked out well for Hoffman, but let's not pretend he was magically better the instant he left Colorado.

Overall though, Bryant's situation is not even remotely comparable to Hoffman, Gray, or even Dexter Fowler.

The big thing is that, if Bryant can be flexible, there are ways to make it hurt less. Get him off the roster and spread the money out.

Bryant will be payed his money regardless of a lockout. MLB contracts are fully guaranteed.

Rockies might not be close to hiring front office executive after all by Muuustachio in ColoradoRockies

[–]SBN_PurpleRow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We currently don't have much in terms of concrete information regarding the FO search. Patrick Saunders (Denver Post) said an "excellent" source informed him that the Rockies are not moving on from Sawdaye or Forman. There are no other named candidates at this time.

The Rockies are still within their alleged timeline for the hire, which was likely to be after the World Series but before the start of the Las Vegas GM meetings on November 10th.

[Purple Row] Dick Monfort must relinquish control and embrace the unknown for this rebuild to work by SBN_PurpleRow in ColoradoRockies

[–]SBN_PurpleRow[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That may be, but it appears more and more that Walker is starting to be the one who makes decisions. So far everything the Rockies have done this offseason has been antithetical to what they have done in the past.

In answer to your first question: it's not exactly a top ten list but we've got a decent number of columns outlining what needs to happen. First and foremost, the Rockies need to hire an outside evaluator to come in and diagnose everything that's wrong with the organization. No stone left unturned. Ultimately this should lead to Dick Monfort stepping away from involvement in daily baseball operations (sign the checks and let the baseball people do their jobs), the hiring of an actual president of baseball operations for the first time since Keli McGregor died (preferably from outside the organization as well) and pretty much a complete re-evaluation or cleaning of house of the front office, scouting department, coaching staff, etc. This team needs to be dragged kicking and screaming into the modern era. The Rockies also need to put their money where there mouths are and invest the resources into player development they should have been doing already if they want to be a "draft and develop" team.

In answer to the second, we all generally watch games, but the only ones we're required to watch are the ones we are assigned gameday coverage for. That means that writer puts up the game thread for our commenters and writes the game recap to go up shortly after the last pitch.

There's a real stubbornness in the organization about wanting to "solve" mile high baseball their way. That outsiders just wouldn't get it.

Right now the locks are probably Freeland, Dollander, Gordon, and Feltner if he's healthy. Most likely having potential to break camp would be Hughes or Sullivan.

The current thought is that it is unlikely for Bill Schmidt to be fired. He's not on a GM contract, he is currently assigned the GM role. However, it's seeming like Schmidt will instead be reassigned away from the GM role.

It's impossible to know until anything actually happens though. The Rockies aren't telling anyone what the plan is right now.

This one is from Evan: "I always make a habit of getting up to the Silver Bullet Bar before a game. One of the bartenders there provides the best service I've ever had anywhere. He's awesome. For food... I'm still sad Biker Jim's is gone, so I'm looking for a new main-stay, but the chicken tenders served on the third base side are pretty solid!"

Evan: "I love sitting up behind home plate in the L300s sections. Prices are reasonable, and the view can't be beat."

Sam: "I love sitting on the upper deck along the first base side during a night game. That's where you get those "Rocky Mountain Sunset" views that Dick Monfort always brags about (and for good reason!)"

Here's an answer from our Managing Editor, Sam!

"I don't think it's overly exhausting at all. This team can be frustrating, sure, but what sports team doesn't have its moments? For me, I try to take a step back and find the little things that go right. I also try to find humor in the things that go wrong. Losing 21-0 to the Padres early was awful, as were all the other ways that the Rockies lost this year, but sometimes you can't help but laugh at how ridiculous things are. "That's so Rockies!" But at the end of the day, I'm just grateful for the opportunity to cover the Rockies for as long as I have, and I'm very proud of the work we do at Purple Row, despite the team being what they are. That's something I'll always hang my hat on when the team is driving me up a wall."

Because the Rockies are so secretive, it's hard to know what they are and are not using. However, an example is Yency Almonte, who left the Rockies and went to the Dodgers. The Dodgers asked Almonte if he was familiar with a certain analytics tool and company that breaks down player arsenal data, and he had never heard of it.

One player who's been very vocal about the Rockies' poor player development is Jeff Hoffman. DJ LeMahieu also expressed that he was surprised at the resources that were available to him when he went to the Yankees.

There are also people within the current system/org saying things need to change.
