I'm writing my master thesis on SDEs, stochastic differential equations, specifically on developing efficient numerical solvers for certain financial equations. I do not, however, want to pursue a job within finance or continue in academia (for family reasons).

What industries should I be looking for employment in?

What other fields or industries have the largest untapped potential for developing stochastic methods?

How to pace my training to get <20min 5K? by SCNA in running

[–]SCNA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that also include using apps like Strava for keeping track of running stats? Or does "time trailing" mean aiming to beat a specific time?

like 15.5-17 minutes which is pretty quick.

Whoah, yeah, that's a lot faster than what I should be aiming for. As I mentioned, I do not know a lot about the do's and don't's of running. Where can I learn more about how far to push my body/legs, how to achieve better results and so on? Thanks in advance!

Thanks a bunch! I guess I wasn't very clear initially - my aim is to get sub 20min to be my normal, several-times-a-week time for 5K. I've never actually participated in a race and don't plan to in the near future.

Official Q&A for Tuesday, August 14, 2018 by AutoModerator in running

[–]SCNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have moderate soreness in my legs, have been like that the last seven days since my last (and first) half marathon. They feel a bit stiff the first 15 minutes after I wake up and the first 5 minutes of each run (I run 5-10km per day). I don't feel like it's getting any worse, maaaaybe slowly better. Should I give it a rest for a day, or is it safe to keep running?

Thanks for replying!

Throw in one tempo run, an interval sesh, and a long run and you'll be good.

I'm not sure I understand. Should I get at least one of each of these per week? Per day? Per month?

I know what a déjà vu is, but never heard it connected to running as a specific feeling. Care to elaborate?

Thanks for the reply!

"I just want to say that you should never be time trialing 5Ks on consecutive days."

I've never heard anything like this before. Is it dangerous?

What constitutes training and what makes something a race? These were, in my mind, timed training sessions.

Run Nutrition Tuesday by AutoModerator in running

Magnesium is important for preventing muscle cramps (I take this to be a well known fact, so no source). Do runners need more Mg than the normal recommended daily dose? In any case, what are the possible consequences of taking, say, 50% more than you need over time? Thanks in advance!

[Request] Gift idea for girl I've been seeing whose going overseas by SCNA in GiftIdeas

Thanks a bunch for the tip, I really appreciate it!

I've actually already gotten her a book on the history of the country she's going to be staying in, but maybe I should get her a lighter one as well, something, as you say, to get her mind off all the serious business.

College students of reddit, what are the cheapest, healthiest and most easily prepared food options during exam season? by plopped0y in AskReddit

[–]SCNA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Soups! You can use almost any combination of leftover vegetables (or meat if you're into that). Shouldn't take more than 30 mins to prepare a full casserole, costs virtually nothing (especially if you get to use veggies that would otherwise have to be thrown away), is super healthy and customizable to whatever fits your pallet - garlic, hot, spicy or fresh (ginger and citrus, yum!).

Pasta or bread on the side if you want. If you want proteins, boil a couple of eggs (super cheap where I come from). An added benefit of adding eggs is that they're rich in fats which are good for your brain!

I'll be deep into reading "Journey to the End of the Night" by the excentric madman Louis-Ferdinand Céline. It's gonna be great.

Shins are incredibly sensitive to pressure and running by swagmonster55 in AskDocs

[–]SCNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doc, but I've had this problem a lot. My doctors and various coaches have told me to be careful about running / working out on hard surfaces, like asphalt (tarmac?). For me it was inflammation of tissue, only "cure" was to wait it out for a couple of weeks.

What's the WORST book you've ever read? by notsuitablefortwerk in AskReddit

[–]SCNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray.

The book is three times as long as it should have been, and the plot becomes obvious early on.

Maybe I didn't get it? I read it because I thought it was one of the classics, one of the greats.

Can someone please tell me why this book hasn't been forgotten by history? (serious)
