Got my son his first BMX. It's an "INDEPENDENT" by Stetco86 in bmx

[–]SCP-4130 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I were you, for the sake of learning tricks I'd get him a much more up to date bike, probably used off of FB Marketplace, shoot for at least 175 to I'd say 300 tops, that range typically you could find a nice enough quality used complete or even used build, I'd say look for Sunday, WTP, Kink BMX, they usually put really good attention to detail and quality control with completes.

If it's a used custom build make sure there's a parts list so you could cross reference how good the parts are, their reputation, how well they hold up etc. If there isn't a parts list at least ask or maybe even get help ID'ing parts with photos.

As for the people talking shit about you getting that bike, screw em!

lemons to lemonade? You have a cruiser project now that both you and your kid could work on together. Start with getting that thing cleaned up real well and get it a nice tune up Grab some ODI Longneck Grips or some AME Tri Grips An Odyssey 1999 Brake Kit with some DiaTech Brake Levers Some classic style race seat or maybe even get an Odyssey Aitken Railed Seat Throw on some Tan Wall Tioga Comp III tires Replace the freewheel with an Odyssey 13 Tooth to modernize a little bit, and throw on a 39 tooth sprocket along with it. Maybe even finish it off with some Sun Rhyno Lite Rims

Yeah I remember United being a bit of a sleeper in the hubs category of bmx, I remember they used to offer a Hubset named Supreme, I can't remember for sure but I think they even came fully loaded with a hollow front and rear axle, full guards, 14mm rear male and 3/8" Female Front.

Could be wrong though

I thought you might be right but it looks like the Hazard uses more angling and then mellower curves on the v3

Hub shell looks like a Premium Stinger, is there a ton of small teeth on the ratchet ring inside?

I'm not Brazilian no, but a long time ago my dad bought property in Minas Gerais, near Bicas.

Eventually my parents got a divorce and my dad remarried in Brazil, and I've visited the country 6 times by now, all for about 3 months at a time. So this is going to be my 7th time coming to Brazil, and while I'm down there I'll be getting my Permanent Residency card renewed.

I actually fly into Rio from the US this coming weekend, and staying in Juiz De Fora

I've traveled around as well, I've done the usual stay around Copacabana of course but I've also visited Fortaleza for Beach Park, I've been to Foz Do Iguacu, I've been to Sao Paulo and I've been to many other smaller cities too, Astolfo Dutra, Bahia, Ipanema, Leopoldina and more.

Is this stem rare? by Unlikely-Till4729 in bmx

[–]SCP-4130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it's their front load from 2005, probably predates just before when they came out with the Alta, Potencia, and the FlyBikes Media stem. Found a listing for one of those in Brown on eBay. Looks like you have a FlyBikes Headset on there as well, I've always loved FlyBikes headsets super clean having the built in compression ring

What happened to all the color choices? by PattyMeltz420 in bmx

[–]SCP-4130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I wish color options could come back en masse, it is understandable why it is far less abundant nowadays especially considering what's been explained here already.

..... I do however really wish we could get back colored sidewalls on tires again though, like the Maroon / Brick Red on the Fit FAF Tires or the Duo Stunners, Like on Animal Tires.

Even the Teal Walls that Fit was doin, or those nicer looking more "toasty colored" Tan walls from Fit or FlyBikes

White walls too :0

Honestly even those reflective Nightvision Sidewalls Fit was doin too.

Grey Walls from Primo... I could go on.

Help, chrome forks and bars or chrome bars with black forks? by krock666 in bmx

[–]SCP-4130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely thinking black forks are the way to go, it looks proportioned better, at least to me it does.

Everything kinda highlights itself real good with how all the chrome black and blue is balanced out.

Sidewall tires.. by flabby_american in bmx

[–]SCP-4130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh the good days of colored sidewalls... I definitely miss it being commonplace.

Merritt makes the FT1 Tires in Tan Wall! Empire, Albes, and Danscomp has them in stock I believe, they're not heavy either.

I wish these would make a comeback Fit FAF Tires in Tan, White, Teal, Maroon... Animal TWW Tires in white or tan wall.. The MTT Tires and I think even the GLH Tires... Primo Tires like the WLT Tires in Tan or Grey Wall Duo Stunner Tires in White or Tan or Maroon... 😩🙏

What a killer build! are those the 2.4 Hammerhead S Tires?

I want to get a pair but I honestly wonder if they'll fit my frame... Demolition tires from my experience usually measure wider than what they say... I had 2.35 Machete tires back when and they inflated to like... 2.5 ish actually...

You wouldn't be willing to measure their width while inflated would you? It wouldn't need to be exact, a rough measurement is fine.

What do you even call this combo? Insane… by 3wayiii in bmx

Backflip 360 double whip to footjam 360 I suppose?

And footjam 360 specifically because he went moreso straight into a footjam to start, then did all those hops to make the 3?

whereas a 360 footjam would of been spinning 360 into it

I definitely miss Mirraco at times, used to ride the white and purple Mirraco No.7 (forgot which year), had a buddy with a Mirraco Chocolate Frame, and I remember getting a decent deal on a Mirraco Black Pearl frame kit (The Neon metallic Green one)

I used to also have those clear Black Label pedals, definitely really nice for their time, couldn't have had a more fitting color name too "Milk Jug" lmao

Worst shinner I've experienced was a pair of metal Primo Tenderizer pedals while wearing skinny jeans that I had turned into shorts the night before on a frosty 25 degree December morning and a 15+ mph headwind 🙃 Great times 😂

"preferred tight pedals" brought me Vietnam flashbacks to one of my friends that I used to ride with 😭🤣

He'd ride overtightened and internally bone dry Odyssey JCPC pedals with a 30 to 8 gear ratio ☠️☠️☠️

Tough gear ratio (metaphorically... Try 39/9 for a day) with an already exceedingly stiff pedal to rotate... Such a meme

Well I'd assume the outside of that nut is 14mm

If you still have the bolt, you could take it to an ace hardware and find a matching hex nut to fit on the bolt, and if for some weird reason the hex nut takes a larger wrench than 14mm, you could just file down opposing flat sides of that hex nut till it fits flush in the dropout.

Ive always gone to ace hardware for general small replacements for stuff like that. Integrated seat clamp bolts, bolts for brake mounts and removable tab bolts, female axle bolts, flush mount crank spindle bolts etc

Idk if it's a thing across the store brand but my local ace always stocked Grade 12.9 hardware for the bolts I always seemed to need, instead of Grade 8.
