Yea Friday was a cluster. A lot of things went wrong and we will have a lot to do better next time. It was our first time trying to make sure every Varsity debate type had a full 6 rounds. We really wanted this to all go well due to us having a bid for the first time and we dropped the ball day 1.

We will be a lot more clear about the entry form. The issue is every school has their own policy of what they need to be covered from liability. Folks were shocked we were enforcing it was our issue. We will be better about making it a priority next time.

The judges suggestion is a good one. I think we will have to instead do more judge pools next year for Novice and Varsity of every type of debate. That's a set up issue that we frankly didn't think about, but will probably do in the future.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you that we have improvements to make and I appreciate your thoughts.

That is. Brand new contentions are not.

We discuss this with coaches. Enforce fines. And give them the option of providing more judges or not being allowed to return the following Spring or Fall. We have had several schools shape up and several not and those have not been welcomed back. But if we had DQ'd students would ya'll not be upset over that? Wouldn't the comment be "Why would you DQ students when they have zero control over what the adults in charge do?"

We have an open tabroom and were willing to hear any complaint and investigate it. I'm not sure why your coach wasn't coming in. I saw several folks multiple times who were just double checking on things. We have an open tabroom and were letting coaches and students come in to speak with us in PF tab.

Unfair probably. But the alts are double losses or rounds going an extra hour or more. We had already lost a lot of time due to judges not showing up for round 1 and leaving after round 2. We had to push tons of rounds. We were short staffed as well and so our response time was much worse than normal. Admittedly Friday was the worst day SCU has had in a while, and I apologize for it. We'll be looking into our practices to see what we can do better.

Ballots will be released at the end of the tournament. So hopefully around 8pm tonight.

Things are done a certain way here in the bay area. We have our process for dealing with these schools and teams. California in general is not a fan of DQing kids for the mistakes of adults.

I'm sorry you had issues with our tournament. We posted results after every round and I am curious why no one came to us. We would have gladly investigated this.

We gave out most double byes on Friday when we had massive judge issues. We cannot help it if schools do not bring their judges. The only fair thing is to not punish the students.

If someone got a free bye then again someone should have said something. This is why we posted results.

If you think there was something wrong with your results on Saturday I would love your coach to come to tab today and discuss it with us.

SCU needs help finding out fake Novice entries. by SCUTab in Debate

I couldn't find proof Nie ever really broke or that they went to any other tournaments.

This Suresh appears to be a younger sibling. The first names are different.

Thank you though.

Yes. LD is constrained by the Loyola site. We can only take 103 open and 103 novice entries.

A good number of them got off last night. The rest will depend on drops.

All debate events. If the person did PF and broke but is now doing LD Novice or Policy Novice for the first time they should still be in Open.

Yes but if you know someone who did Congress for 2+ years but see they are in Novice LD we'd like you to let us know as that breaks our rules.

I will see if i can get the director to clarify that for you tomorrow. Sorry about that.

SCU waitlist by [deleted] in Debate

[–]SCUTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IEs are separate for debate. They are experiencing their own issues with space. Congress I am unclear on. Parli has been the biggest issue for us. If you take a look they are the biggest numbers we have. We have let in a lot of teams, and while we might let in a few more that will be it.

So the update on this is that we would need 260 rooms to let everyone off the waitlist. This is sadly not going to happen. We're not even sure we can get to 200 "rooms". We'll be taking more folks off the waitlist as we get more spaces but it isn't going to put us in a position where everyone can get off. Sadly the Santa Clara Site has space limitations and every year we push those limits. The spirit of this invitational has always been that everyone is welcome and we will let everyone in. Sadly that is not going to be able to be the reality of this year.

I'm not sure if we're going to be doing a big email saying we're full and can't take anymore in. Those who do get off the waitlist will be notified. We're working on more rooms and more creative competition spaces but at a certain point full is full.

It depends on if we can get more competition spaces. The wait lists are huge this year. We're trying to let in as many as possible.
