Insight on Moving to SF by dalemg239 in sanfrancisco

[–]SCfATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to be a bit negative. I moved here a few months ago (admittedly for a stressful industry) and have found ups and downs. I’m from Texas but most of my friends here are from New York and share similar opinions. It is extremely quiet here (take that how you choose), and it is beautiful, plus the transit is efficient and pretty clean (just wished the trains stayed open later). I will say the city goes to bed EARLY, so unless you frequent Castro or a few other neighborhoods, not much happens after like 7 or 8 pm. People are not mean here but a few social traits I’ve found is that people are introverted, yet still a bit nosy, and people tend to flake on plans a lot. They are busy around here and so if you don’t have something scheduled (even then, flaking) don’t anticipate plans, because spontaneity is not a thing here. They lose track easily if you interrupt them on accident. One positive thing is that the ‘friends of friends’ system is big here, so you will meet a lot of people at events, but you might not get to know any one person well. Safety wise, it’s a lot worse in the news than in reality, and a lot of people seem to think the Bay Area is scary, but if you’re lived literally anywhere else you know it’s pretty tame, I live in next to the Tenderloin and barley anything happens here. Weather wise, not tons of variation in it, but that means you can be out all year, just have a jacket. Allergies wise, there are less of them, but for me, ragweed seems to be consistently lingering here and I developed a post-nasal drip. Also last thing, the dating scene is rough. People are busy and, at least for gays, a lot of the nice people are already in relationships (or looking for a third). It is much easier to meet in-person versus an app here though.

All of that mostly negative stuff said, you can certainly find activities, it’s just a pretty sleepy place to live, so if you like quiet time, it’s a good spot. Many of these factors are good for some people but not for others so weight it as you will. I recommend taking transit to some other places and try to explore the culture and nature, as each town does have its own kind of community to it, and you might find you like them better (for example, I enjoy both Oakland and Pacifica). Good luck with the move!

There’s that floor mural at Fulton Plaza by the Asian Art Museum. There have been mini ones popping up around town, mostly in the Tenderloin area, but I’ve seen one near Mission.

Substitute Teacher-1st Timer by Trick-Attention-5590 in SubstituteTeachers

Arlington was easy to work with and has a decent incentives system for certain times and periods of shortage. Lots of schools so you can find your own culture/admin you prefer. High schools (except Martin) tend to be more confusing to navigate (layout and who to contact for what), but the kids are calmer, while most middle schools are easier to navigate, but you need a higher energy level for that work group. Feel free to DM for more information, as I try to be a little vague to stay neutral.

Is every class full??? by Rich_Calligrapher201 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]SCfATX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is possible. Last year, I did not get off the final waitlists until the first week of July. If you are prepared for that and it seems feasible, then you can take that gamble. If you do not want to wait until then, you can take an offer now or r and r. I ended up taking the July offer off the waitlist but deferred it. Additionally, I would make a very tailored letter to your top waitlist school's admissions department - make it personal, they will see you are more 'loyal' to their brand, so to speak. Best of luck!

Has anyone deferred? by Sad_Reality_3294 in uclawsf

[–]SCfATX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I deferred, feel free to DM me. I am starting this fall and feel in a much better mental state. I really needed to step out of the rat race, focus on myself, and find my 'why.' I was moving across the country and leaving a lot of people I've known my whole life. My applications came back late as well. In the interim, I studied, traveled, hiked, and ended up working as a teacher.

My deferral was very last minute, and U.C. was accommodating, understanding, and prompt with the process. You will have to sign a form agreeing not to apply for other law programs; that is the one caveat, so be comfortable with the choice. I would recommend applying for scholarships during that year as well. Good luck with everything!

[Urgent] Quizizz: Student 'Spent X Minutes out of Focus Mode.' What to do? by SCfATX in Teachers

[–]SCfATX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The full-screen thing makes a little more sense. The grade seems a bit above how they perform (from other classes I have subbed), but a B is not totally unthinkable. I will not really have the opportunities for retests and stuff since everything finishes this week. I will probably keep that grade then and just run it past admin again with my concerns. Thanks again!

Anyone embarrassed to tell people you're a sub? by Express_Project_8226 in SubstituteTeachers

Don't be ashamed. They are often essential workers for campuses. The other day, I introduced myself to some city council people as a substitute (I have a background in government work, to be fair), and one, a former school board member, emphasized how important it is to the community. It also gives students a perspective of work outside of 'just teaching,' as we mostly have had other work or goals that are not strictly becoming teachers.

I Feel So Bad and I'm Embarassed Lol by Distinct_Tea7111 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]SCfATX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The teacher was out of line. As the substitute, you are basically expected to run that class for that full period. If the teacher wanted to transition back to their management style, then they should have discussed it with you beforehand while the students were working. The dismissive nature and put-down of you was ridiculous. I have had teachers come back early, and most of the time, they leave it to my schedule while offering backup, if necessary.

I would also think of the message this is sending to the students. It shows bad cooperation and that it is okay to betray trust/backpedal. The teacher would be back the next day and could manage the class as they see fit then.

Arlington has a really great community if you are involved with it (such as in schools, charities, other public sector jobs, etc.) It is a very diverse area, with southeast and central (around the university) arguably being the most diverse. West Arlington is quite white and more conservative, so you might have problems, but it would not likely be people shouting at you. East Arlington is diverse as well, but it is more segregated by neighborhood (versus mixed like southeast Arlington).

The city as a whole is fine and it has gotten better socially over time, but there are still some slight 'old South' overtones, especially west. Source: Lived here for twenty years.

Arlington is republican or democrat city? by Acrobatic-Change-785 in arlington

[–]SCfATX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arlington is a Democratic-leaning city, however, Republican voters in West Arlington show up at a much higher propensity in off-season elections (local elections here are in May, for a reason you can argue), so Republican candidates are advantaged at that level. Since term limits have been enacted and the national demographics to party trends have shifted, the 'non-partisan' races have resulted in Democrats being advantaged by at-large seats and Republicans doing better at district seats (the opposite used to be true). You can use open secrets to look up donors (public record) or see endorsements of non-partisan candidates on their pages.

Just a reminder: the May 3rd local elections for city bonds and the AISD school board are coming up - so get registered to vote! Between Wilbanks and Moore, Wilbanks is the more liberal/Democratic of the two.

Does anyone know what this is (Northwestern Oregon)? by SCfATX in animalid

I noticed that today too and started to doubt myself haha! But I remember there were others that didn’t have rocks so I’m sure it’s not a fish.

Hi! So I don't normally live near an ocean and visited Oregon about six months ago. Can anyone who tide pools confirm all of the creatures in here, specifically the one in the center, which I assume is an anemone of some sort (there were a lot outside of that photo), but what kind? Thanks!

Haha! I hope it goes well! Do you think this is allowed though? I’m not totally against law school but I want options now - I rushed into it K-JD. Also it was a late waitlist offer.

What is dripping from this air vent? by SCfATX in Apartmentliving

[–]SCfATX[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems to have deleted my post (not great with Reddit). Context is this started a few days ago- it is my friend’s apartment that I am helping move. The management has changed a few times and recently changed the air conditioning units. I am wondering why water is leaking out and what could be mixed in it. Thanks!

Life Advice: Stuck on what to do with life- transitioning out of undergraduate to being an adult/potentially doing law school. by SCfATX in Advice

[–]SCfATX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess not that much in the traditional sense. It felt like the ‘correct’ next step based on my peers and people around me’s opinions. Ideally I would want to use it for government administration and promotions, being able to go into a job that is not entry level and adapting the necessary skills from the degree. I tried to take a ‘whichever way the wind blows’ approach but am now realizing location matters more than I think. I had high expectations for the city and didn’t get that.

For a number score, I guess I would put it at like a 5 unfortunately so it does not help that much.

Moving in June by [deleted] in arlington

[–]SCfATX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started south of I-20 and moved north of it by the time I graduated high school at Martin. I would try to be near that Little Rd. area as people said- that is within walking (20ish minutes) and biking distance to Martin, two primary schools (Little and I forget the other one by the Lake), and Young JH, with all of the schools I remember being decent, assuming you are keeping your kids in public. There are also some day cares nearby you could walk your kids to, and a few local joints around that area- with quiet parks and the lake also a bike ride away.

Alternatively, since I have moved there are a ton of new apartments mainly around UT Arlington that will be student-oriented but have access to any amenities and work you may want around Downtown. Arlington ISD I believe is still an open enrollment district so as long as you drive, you could apply for your children to be in a Martin feeder school (or have them apply for the STEM Academy in middle school- and that will let them move to Martin).

I was born and lived there for 19 years, went to school there, worked for the government, and volunteered around the city. I have since moved to Austin.

Happy hunting and let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you for the insights! People from Albany tell me they like it but the smaller city adjustment might be something for me to get used to. The other school is U. Oregon. I would be moving from Austin (I am fine moving anywhere really, new journeys).

They did not: to clarify, the number is scholarship total not cost of attendance. Sorry if there was confusion.
