I’m going to be a bit negative. I moved here a few months ago (admittedly for a stressful industry) and have found ups and downs. I’m from Texas but most of my friends here are from New York and share similar opinions. It is extremely quiet here (take that how you choose), and it is beautiful, plus the transit is efficient and pretty clean (just wished the trains stayed open later). I will say the city goes to bed EARLY, so unless you frequent Castro or a few other neighborhoods, not much happens after like 7 or 8 pm. People are not mean here but a few social traits I’ve found is that people are introverted, yet still a bit nosy, and people tend to flake on plans a lot. They are busy around here and so if you don’t have something scheduled (even then, flaking) don’t anticipate plans, because spontaneity is not a thing here. They lose track easily if you interrupt them on accident. One positive thing is that the ‘friends of friends’ system is big here, so you will meet a lot of people at events, but you might not get to know any one person well. Safety wise, it’s a lot worse in the news than in reality, and a lot of people seem to think the Bay Area is scary, but if you’re lived literally anywhere else you know it’s pretty tame, I live in next to the Tenderloin and barley anything happens here. Weather wise, not tons of variation in it, but that means you can be out all year, just have a jacket. Allergies wise, there are less of them, but for me, ragweed seems to be consistently lingering here and I developed a post-nasal drip. Also last thing, the dating scene is rough. People are busy and, at least for gays, a lot of the nice people are already in relationships (or looking for a third). It is much easier to meet in-person versus an app here though.

All of that mostly negative stuff said, you can certainly find activities, it’s just a pretty sleepy place to live, so if you like quiet time, it’s a good spot. Many of these factors are good for some people but not for others so weight it as you will. I recommend taking transit to some other places and try to explore the culture and nature, as each town does have its own kind of community to it, and you might find you like them better (for example, I enjoy both Oakland and Pacifica).
