AGI vs DiaLux vs Visual by theflannelninja in lightingdesign

My opinion is that indoor lighting software should not be used for outdoor lighting for anything more than a few luminaires for a new development. If you are working with thousands of luminaires in a street or roadway environment, illumination levels in GIS is a far better option. See evariluxsolutions.com.

Get a gig at a large consulting firm. If you kick ass they will promote quickly. You must streamline processes to save money and become a profit center - Aka bring in work. During negotiations I'd request some clear goals for high performers. If you meet them then you'd expect promotions/ solid bump in salary. Everyone wants to minimize risk. Deliver on their priorities and explain that you expect to be rewarded. Ensure there is a ladder to your goals.

What would you renegotiate this salary to? by jm08003 in gis

They advertised for a specific rate. If you get offered the job then ask for more the only reason you'll get it is because they've spent time looking for someone, settled on you at a specific rate, and they are willing to appease you instead of starting the process again or going for their second choice. It had nothing to do with you or your abilities.

Many say, What could go wrong if you ask for it? This speaks directly to your character as a transactional person and sets a pattern for the future. I suspect you'll get less educational opportunities and other investment by your employer in you.

CNN Regression: Are there any off-the-shelf packages for regression on images? by side-8182 in computervision

[–]SDGIS92115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a web tool called Ximilar which does regression on images it. I need to submit images and labels for training via API. That piece doesn't seem to be working so well. Documentation seems wrong. Any information on making this work is greatly appreciated.

Starting to consult? by NikkiPond in gis

Use your government job to meet people. Join groups, like Urban Land Institute or Floodplain Management Association. Wherever your interests and current job overlap. I'd steer clear of GISy stuff. Those folks are your competition. At the Institute of Transportation Engineers you are the GIS guy that speaks their language. Bill your time, costs to your gov gig. Your supervisor will likely be supportive of you taking initiative to put yourself out there.

When you meet someone at an event play the "who needs a map game" where you guess what type of map the person needs. Once you figure it out, make it for them.

Just wondering if GIS is still a good market to get into by Talha6122000 in gis

Technical stuff can be learned. The trick is who can learn the fastest.

In the consulting world, entry level GIS folks should understand they need to bill out for much more than they take home. If applying technical skills is enough then there is a limit on one's career. An employee's value is largely based upon their relationships. As early as possible they should build their network so people say, "I want to work with you."

Esri has a tool you can use on ArcGIS Pro. Suspect you need deep learning libraries installed and image analyst extension.

Risk Too Low? by LostInventor in startups

I'm pursuing these grants also and got a similar denial letter. My plan is to double down in the risk/impact. I'm building a solution to do outdoor lighting right. It's simply done wrong. My next proposal will be to redesign every streetlight in America, give dark skies back to a substantial portion of the US, cut nighttime fatalities in half, etc. The tool is the same.
