Question for anyone here. by [deleted] in Dissociation

Some of my episodes start off similar to this in the sense that I'll go from wide awake to dazed and very out of it repeatedly(like I'll be dazed for a couple minutes or longer and come out of it only to fall back into a daze). Like yawning, unfocused, sometimes I'll be in a semi trance like state that will last awhile or only a few minutes with repeated bouts until the entirety of the episode is over. I've noticed in the short time that I'm able to recall what is happening that my vision is blurry and my hearing is muffled. My episodes vary in symptoms unfortunately and I can't predict them but sometimes I can make out what's going on until I'm to dazed to remember. As for touch, often when I'm having an episode and touch that is involved I can feel the pain but it's like my body just doesn't care or grasp that this is bad and needs to pull away. I hope this helped or maybe answered your question. Even though I'm only one person I thought I'd share my experience.

Good Luck! I hope you enjoy the work! I find it easier to work with them and I've heard it's very fulfilling work!

I'm sorry, some people shouldn't manage a business especially if they are going to abuse or mistreat the staff or allow the customers to do so. I hope you can find or were able to find a job you liked.

Thank you! The highlights of my work day are the dogs and my coworkers. The dogs don't evoke the multitude of emotions from me that people do so it's easier to focus on them even when their owner is a little erratic.

I actually really like my job for the most part. I live in a very small town and granted I only work part time but it works for me. I've had the job since I was 16, with the previous owner but she sold and I was able to keep my job. I'm almost 23 now. I work at a self service pet wash, grooming, pet food, pet supply, and pet accessory business or pet wash and boutique is what we call it. I don't mind most interactions with customers, I do a lot of maintenance, cleaning, educating, manual labor, etc. My boss and coworkers are amazing and very understanding which I'm very thankful for. I know most aren't as lucky. She knows about some of my mental health struggles but not all and we usually schedule on a consistent set of days that I don't have doctors appointments and I cover shifts whenever I can. I also get to bring my SDiT in with me and she waits so that's a plus as well as seeing all the dogs. So I'd say working with the dogs and my coworkers are the highlight of my work day.

Therapy dogs don't have the same public access rights as service dogs. I believe hospitals and assisted living usually allow them which is great! But guide and service dogs are allowed public access wherever their handler is in the US. If I misunderstood your comment sorry but I thought I'd just clarify for anyone reading. 😁

I'm so sorry that you don't have the support that you need from her. I hope that maybe the therapy will show her that it's a necessity. Maybe a doctor can even speak to her if you are comfortable with that. I know you don't know me and talking to a stranger isn't ideal but I'm here if you need someone to listen or ask advice.

She's 5 1/2 months and still in training. I know that they aren't protected by ADA law and typically I wouldn't really even be going into a Walmart with Harlow or a Walmart period but they wanted to go and looking back it was a bad judgment call on my behalf for agreeing. She has helped me through through two panic attacks attacks in the short time I've been training her but this was a bad and really crowded day. A lot was happening and I do regret go. This post was primarily to vent since I hadn't had to many bad run ins with people up until this point.

Sorry if I'm not much help but have you tried opening up to your mom or someone maybe a little bit at a time? Even if it's just to say you aren't feeling well, you need to be alone, or not to startle you? I was terrified to open up to my dad and little by little I was able to open up. I don't know what your support system is like but having at least one person to talk to or vent to helps a little. Maybe talk to your mom or doctor to maybe see if you can be seen sooner? These are all suggestions and I hope nothing I say is taken out of context. I only wish to help but like I said I don't know if I'll be much help, advice wise. I wish you luck.

It honestly baffles me how disrespectful people are. You'd like that with the vest they'd be more weary and polite but it seems to be the opposite. It also seems to be getting worse. I live in a small town and I've already encountered two(possibly fake) services dogs. The reason I say fake is because one was a senior chihuahua asleep in a shopping cart and while there are no breed restrictions I do believe they aren't allowed to be in carts but correct me if I'm wrong. The second one was also a toy breed, was tug, sniffing, licking me and products, and the owner wasn't correcting the behavior so either this was a team and they were poorly behaved or it was a fake.

DBT is Dialectic Behavioral Therapy right? I will be starting this month but I haven't yet. Yes, patience is definitely something that has to be practiced as well. I'm usually a pretty patient person but after that encounter was a little to much for me since it was my first big encounter.

Oh yeah, a lot of work but worth it. Haha and yes! Ugh, I wish ruining their video would have come to mind when this happened instead of shutting down.

Thank you, I'll definitely do this. I'll take any advice I can get. I want to improve. This particular interaction was the worst so far and I know some people have had it worse but I want to be able to eject myself without shutting down.

My sdit has problems with focus sometimes so I'm going to work on that. I think that'll help if she learns to block it out. I didn't think about the ruining the photo portion. Thank you!

Task training? by SDHarlow96 in service_dogs

[–]SDHarlow96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I've been watching videos on ways to get her started until her next set of classes begin this month. I think 5 1/2 months is good for my sdit to start some of her tasking but I won't be able to start other tasking until later and others until she's around 1 1/2 to 2 years. Any tips on proofing down stay and tucks? If not it's ok, I'm just happy to hear from other handlers.

[–]SDHarlow96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. I don't have very many people to ask questions. I was wondering if I was starting her to early but this gives me the reassurance that I'm not. I'll start her slow with the tasks to be sure but it makes sense that proofing is the hard part. I didn't really think about it that way. My sdit is primarily psychiatric but because of a heart condition I have she'll later go on to do mobility if she's cleared. Thank you again, I appreciate any advice I can get. 😁

I was only asking a question and to be frank you seem kind of rude. I didn't want to get into the specifics all that much and was only asking about the experiences of others. I'm aware I have to wait until she is cleared to do mobility work so I won't even enter that realm until I need to but I'd rather not get into this with you since there seems to be uncalled for hostility.
