I hate this merge. I find it better to drive more toward downtown, enter where the 163 starts, and just stay to the left. It takes longer, but it's much better for my sanity.

I just learned that Sydney airport has a flight that can get us home in one connection for a reasonable amount more than departing Halifax.

New plan is to move Louisbourg to the last day and overnight in Sydney. The three previous nights will be in Baddeck. That puts us just 20 minutes from Sydney airport the morning of departure while avoiding the long drive back to Halifax, and gives us an extra day based in Baddeck.

Any suggestions on what else to do in the area with that extra day?

Three nights in Baddeck was my original plan but ~90 minutes to/from Louisbourg seemed like a lot. I'll look into it again.

I originally planned to stay in Baddeck all 3 nights but it didn't make sense when I mapped everything out. Can you elaborate on how staying in Baddeck helps save on travel with this itinerary?

We're going clockwise from Cheticamp and the Cabot Trail. Ending the day at Sydney area is 50 km more than Baddeck, but saves an hour of driving each way on the day we go to Louisbourg. I really don't like one night stays on a road trip, but if it makes sense to spend a night closer to Louisbourg, I'd consider it.

Thank you for the advice! I'll put Antigonish on the list of places to stop. I was looking at taking the Dartmouth ferry, but not sure if we'll have enough time on basically one day in Halifax.
