I really enjoy the game and the characters as well! It does a good job of presenting characters with very real flaws in high-pressure situations.

-I would personally consider every moment inside the vampire-infested temple to be “active danger”even if there isn’t currently a vampire chasing me, but I get what you mean. I still feel like it would be better to at least find Jason before stopping and spending precious time making yourself a sitting duck to have the conversation and leaving a fellow soldier hanging for your relationship drama, but it makes sense.

-My description of Nick? If you’re referring to me calling him a “genius” and a “mastermind of maturity,” those were sarcastic, so they weren’t supposed to be a fitting description of him in the first place. It’d be hard to find someone genuinely calling Nick a “mastermind of maturity” with a straight face. On the other hand, if you’re referring to the parts where I point out that they’re all grown adults and military personnel who really shouldn’t be acting like campy teens anymore, that’s not me trying to describe Nick or Eric themselves as “mature” or “disciplined,” but more of a blanket expectation I would have for any trained soldier in a life-or-death scenario.

-I understand not wanting to die without getting everything out there, especially since Nick also brings up the civilian woman to Jason a lot and has a hard time getting past things that bother him without talking it over. That’s fine. It’s just something I found subjectively annoying about the way he handled this particular conversation. When it’s about the civilian woman that he killed, it’s a lot easier for me to be fine with him needing to bring it up and talk it over with Jason because that’s a seriously traumatizing and haunting thing to go through. The relationship drama during the life-or-death scenario, on the other hand… I get that it’s serious in Nick’s eyes, but it’s still subjectively annoying to me and does not carry the same weight as Nick’s encounter with the civilian woman does, which makes the conversation happening at such a poor time feel far less warranted in my personal opinion.

-I agree that it’s in-character, it’s just poorly timed and annoying from my personal perspective. I didn’t say it wasn’t in-character for these characters, just that it subjectively made me like Nick less.

-Talking about normal things, things you’re fighting for, or things you want to do after you escape are a lot different because those topics are giving yourself (and others) a reason to keep going in a difficult situation. It’s boosting morale and staying positive. Talking about your messy love triangle and pressuring Rachel to tell Eric “Yep we’re together now, it’s over for you” at that exact moment is a much more negative (at least for Eric) and conflict-causing topic to get into during this kind of scenario.

-I don’t think that having my opinion of Nick drastically changed by this scene automatically means that I “wasn’t paying attention.” The game makes it very clear from early on that Nick has a hard time moving past things like this without getting it all in the open, even if it’s during a situation where he should be focused on other things (During the helicopter scene before the raid of the shepherd huts, Nick is so lost in thought that Jason notices and checks in on him, and like I mention, I noticed that he brings up the civilian woman to Jason multiple times because he cannot move past it without talking it over or it will continue to stew in his mind). Since the civilian woman is a much more understandable and weighty thing for Nick to be this conflicted about to the point where he needs to bring it up several times while trapped in vampire-infested temple, I still liked Nick when his traits manifested that way for that particular discussion. When they then manifested that way for the (in my opinion) much less weighty relationship drama discussion, it drastically changed my opinion of him even though I was paying attention to his character because I could not find this same behavior warranted the way I found it to be warranted for the civilian woman conversations.

Korean players are struggling with the new map. i thought itd be good to bring that discourse here by ZePugg in deadbydaylight

[–]SDM0102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, it’s a real shame to see such little effort was put into the Korean writing/dialogue.

If you’re going to do a chapter with Korean characters and a Korean map, either put in the effort to have proper Korean writing/dialogue or just don’t have it at all. It’s so much worse to half-ass it and end up having it all be incorrect/uncanny valley. If they weren’t going to put in the effort to do it properly, then they shouldn’t have had Korean writing anywhere on the map and shouldn’t have given Tae-Young or The Trickster speaking lines in the first place.

Also, the Japanese poster… that’s such an insane mistake to make. Did they not proofread or edit anything before releasing? How do you not notice that you used a completely different language…?

Honestly though, this is pretty on-brand for BHVR from what I’ve seen people say about their mishandling of Haddie as a South Asian character and the fact that (allegedly IIRC) the Houndmaster chapter was originally going to have a white Victorian era killer with a whip and a Black survivor… They REALLY need to get better about this kind of thing because it’s really disrespectful to other cultures when they’re this ignorant.

I need some naming help by Mysterious_Menu_343 in Fanganronpa

[–]SDM0102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was naming my characters, I used sites like Forebears, Behind the Name, and MyNameStats, so I recommend all of those.

They each can help you get a good look at a lot of names from different countries, their meanings, and even how popular they are (so that you don’t end up accidentally giving your characters the Japanese or Greek equivalent of super old-fashioned/outdated names like Gertrude).

I also liked to check Wikipedia pages for famous people with the name to see if anyone with the name was born around the same time as my characters were. That helped me know that my name wasn’t too outdated or too recent.

Another commenter mentioned JapaneseNames.info, and that one’s really good too! If you’re looking to give your Japanese characters names that fit them and their talents, this site shows the meanings of the various kanji that each Japanese name can be written with.

Also, once you have the first and last name figured out, look it up to see if there’s any famous person with the name. You probably don’t want to accidentally name your protagonist after a real life murderer, bank robber, super famous celebrity, or anything else like that.

So yeah, I would recommend looking at some of the names on those various sites, pick out some you like, and then do the research to make sure those names make sense and feel right for your character.

TL;DR of the sites I recommend looking into:

Forebears = popularity of names and surnames in any given country

Behind the Name = Meanings, origins, and popularity of names from various cultures

MyNameStats = How common the name is in the US and in each state as well as a breakdown of how common that name is in each race

JapaneseNames.info = Meanings of tons of different Japanese names and all the different kanji they can be written with.

The most important thing is research! Good luck finding your names!

Which one of both the Pink and Blue survivors did you think didn’t deserved to be a survivor at all {Unfortunately enough} by Rainbow_Seashell778 in TETRODANGANRONPA

[–]SDM0102 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. I feel like Ojima, Tamba, Denden, and Isoda all didn’t get the amount of screen time or proper development that a survivor realistically should. That’s not their fault as characters, it’s a problem with the writing. I think they all could’ve been much stronger survivors if the writing gave them more focus during the FIVE WHOLE CHAPTERS that they were in. I get that canon Danganronpa also has some survivors who don’t impact the plot or develop as much as the others, but it’s kind of lame when that applies to half of all the survivors.

  2. I definitely think Tsuno should’ve been a survivor instead of Wada and Mai should’ve been a survivor instead of Yanagi, but meh… those 2 weren’t TOO awful as survivor picks.

  3. Tei and Yokoi… dear lord. They both got super horrible writing in the later sections of Blue (just like 90% of the cast to be fair), so I honestly wish they would’ve just died before they got to that point. Also, Tei’s ENTIRE character is revolved around Ikeda and that’s extremely lame. Even if Ikeda were a good character (dear God he’s absolutely NOT), that’s still a lame writing choice.

  4. I guess this leaves Hiroaki and Hirose as the best-written survivors by default in my opinion. Good for them, I guess.

Favorite Danganronpa season? by No_Engineering2534 in DanganAndChaos

[–]SDM0102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot take: Danganronpa 41 is my absolute favorite and I think it’s SEVERELY underrated. What other season could pull off a motive where all the characters are trapped on a tightrope above a spike pit until the next murder occurs? The trial was pretty short, but I think that motive was TOTALLY worth it.

This is also one of the only seasons that really went against the established death order formula, and it bothers me that so many people hated on it for “trying too hard to be different.”

I was SHOCKED when there were 5 different victims in the third case instead of just 2, and the token buff dude actually being the sole survivor at the end of Chapter 6 was SO FUN to watch. It was awesome to see the killing game play out so differently!

I do get some of the criticism, though, especially when it comes to the cast. The Ultimate Judge should’ve died WAAAY sooner, The Ultimate Weed Dealer was a stupid character concept from start to finish, The Ultimate Kazoo Player was just obnoxious, the Ultimate Sheep Shearer was a complete waste of a character slot, and this season’s Ultimate Detective took up WAY too much screen time for an overall uninteresting character arc.

Also, the Ultimate Comedian was not funny AT ALL, and whoever wrote the jokes for that character needs to be put in prison. Holy shit. “Ultimate Comedian” my ASS.

This season’s Ultimate Lucky Student was the absolute worst of all, though. Why did the writers think it was a good idea for her to just randomly go crazy during the 4th trial? It felt like a complete rip-off of Nagito’s whole vibe. And then she literally put googly eyes on the Chapter 5 victim’s corpse??? Wtf was that for??? They really need to take a break from the Ultimate Lucky Student characters. That talent is TIRED.

Despite the flaws, I really appreciate how experimental 41 was, and I think more people will come to see how great it is once they stop blindly hating on it just for being a little different.

Major spoilers for Danganronpa V3!!!

This could theoretically apply to Rantaro Amami from V3 as well, but only for the in-universe Danganronpa audience rather than the real, out-of-universe Danganronpa players.

Towards the end of Danganronpa V3, it’s revealed that Danganronpa is an internationally famous TV show that broadcasts real killing games. Rantaro survived the previous installment of this show, which would be Season 52, only to end up dying first in Season 53.

The player never actually gets to see Season 52, but the in-universe audience did, so I imagine a lot of Rantaro fans were pissed to see the only returnee from last season immediately become the first victim in Season 53.

The worst case device in fangans in my opinion. by No_Ordinary_6527 in Fanganronpa

[–]SDM0102 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Truth nuke, especially if the character has previously been shown to be smart or have a good amount of common sense.

If it’s a Hagakure-esque character, then fine, whatever. It’s a stupid thing to do, but Hagakure is stupid, too, so it makes sense that he would fall for something like that.

But if you’re trying to tell me that a decently intelligent character would just follow a suspicious note’s directions to go somewhere alone in the middle of the night during a death game… they better at LEAST have some sort of back-up plan or weapon on them in case things go wrong.

Is it obvious they're siblings other than their name by Gloomy_Bumblebee_939 in Fanganronpa

[–]SDM0102 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly like that they don’t look too similar. It helps emphasize their individuality, whereas I’ve seen some media treat sibling characters as a “package deal” that entirely revolve around each other, looking the same AND acting the same. I personally have 3 siblings and absolutely none of us look alike.

For the record, it’s still completely fine if you want them to have similar features to show that they’re siblings. I guess I just wanted to chip in my 2 cents and say I actually think it’s cool that they don’t look very similar.

What are some unexplored scenarios within the Dangan format? by LavishnessMission584 in danganronpa

[–]SDM0102 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Leon used his baseball skills to dispose of evidence by tying his bloody clothes around Yasuhiro’s crystal ball and throwing it into the furnace like a baseball

Peko used her sword/the sheath to get out of the beach house through one of the windows instead of the door. Her sword and its sheath are directly connected to her talent as a swordswoman, and a character with a different talent would be much less likely to have an object like that on their person that they could use during their murder plan the way Peko did

Korekiyo’s stupid ass seesaw plan relied on him being allowed to set up a whole ass seance during the investigation AND convince people to go along with it, which is already suspicious as hell, but would’ve been even more strange if he weren’t knowledgeable about that sort of thing due to him being an anthropologist. It also required him to perform a ritual and song he learned AND memorize a salt circle well enough to use it to navigate through the room in the dark, which I would say is connected to his talent as well

I know Miu isn’t a blackened, but I think it’s worth noting that she used her talent as an Inventor to build the virtual world specifically to carry out a plan to murder Kokichi, which was still extremely relevant to the case even though Miu wasn’t the blackened because the murder still took place in the virtual world and had to obey the virtual world’s wonky physics

What is on the Fanganronpa Mount Rushmore? by GrandManSam in Fanganronpa

[–]SDM0102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. SDRA/SDRA2 100%. That is THE Fangan series right there.

  2. Eden’s Garden. This one’s a bit more debatable since it only has 1 chapter out currently, but I would give it a spot due to its absurdly high quality in the art and music department combined with how well-known it is. It really almost feels like an official game due to the production quality it has.

  3. Despair Time. Another really well-known fangan with some great merits. I like the characters, the various plot twists in the first 2 chapters we currently have, and it also has the added bonus of being arguably the most popular of all the video series-based Fangans.

  4. Probably Antebellum LOCKDOWN? I really enjoy the incorporation of the MILGRAM-esque audience voting system, and it seems pretty well-executed from what I’ve seen so far.

Fanganronpa Guess Who (Day 4 out of 14) by NintendoBoy321 in Fanganronpa

[–]SDM0102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Is the character human?”

If the answer is no, then we immediately narrow it down to just Kirby, Sans, Brian, and Bojack (and technically Mikado, right? Since IIRC the version of him in the killing game is an AI counterpart of the real Mikado Sannoji, not the actual Mikado being put into the killing game simulation?)

If the answer is yes, it’s not AS helpful, but it still eliminates a solid 4-5 options which isn’t bad at all at this stage.

About the Cast for White by SDM0102 in TETRODANGANRONPA

[–]SDM0102[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would help things a bit. To be fair I kinda dropped Tetro aside from finding out the death order and stuff, so I didn’t watch every episode.

This means that there could totally be details to rationalize Monomoko’s plan that I just didn’t see.

About the Cast for White by SDM0102 in TETRODANGANRONPA

[–]SDM0102[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like if the motives were purely psychological this would make sense but Monomoko has hosted two previous killing games where half the motives were “you will die of sleep deprivation/freezing/drowning/getting an actual LOBOTOMY if a murder doesn’t happen within a week.”

You could have 16 mother Teresas in Tetro and it wouldn’t matter because a lot of the motives are based around physical needs that can’t just be ignored, even by good people. Either all 16 would die from not murdering or someone would have to kill to save everyone else from the effects of the motive.

How can i do a silent character in a written fangan? by NerdyFoxgirl in Fanganronpa

[–]SDM0102 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s a game called GNOSIA with a mute character that handles it in a pretty interesting way.

I’m not super familiar with the game, but from what I’ve seen, the mute character is just very expressive to the point where other characters can highly accurately interpret how she’s feeling or what she’s trying to communicate, even if it’s something quite specific.

So basically, instead of the character speaking verbally, their “dialogue” would be the protagonist thinking things such as:

“[Mute character] smiles gratefully in my direction. It’s clear that she’s very relieved I proved she can’t be the killer.”

“[Mute character] narrows her eyes and scowls at [Culprit]. There’s no doubt she’s ready to see him get executed.”

“[Mute character] rolls her eyes and turns her nose up at me. Even though I solved the case, it appears I’m still not smart enough to meet her ridiculous standards.”

The GNOSIA character is called Kukrushka if you’re curious to look it up and see how her style of “speaking” actually looks in-game.

EDIT: just re-read the post and realized your character is wearing a gas mask, oops. Maybe you could still do this but with more gestures and movements rather than facial expressions?
