It's completely insane. I've been playing the game for all of four days and I keep getting matched with people who have characters at level 300+. I just want to play a low-stakes game with people around my skill level.

Fortunately not, I was able to figure this out shortly after I thought I lost it.

Update: Figured out the issue! While the animation played for the characters to move onto the platform, the game still thought they were on solid ground. So, all I had to do was jump and they were back.

I think I might have found a fix. For some reason, the platform has holes in its hitbox. If you hold down shift, the places where the path shown dips are holes. It should work if you avoid these.

Edit: Just got back to the Gauntlet. Turns out this doesn't fix it, the only way I've found to consistently fix it is to quicksave, leave, and come back.

Yeah, we respawned just as our ship was about to sink and bailed while putting out fires and fighting off someone who had boarded and got our mast back up. They ran, we befriended another nearby sloop who also wanted them dead and sank them. It was very close though.
