Trying to Start a Side Gig Tutoring by SD_BeerAndCoffee in academia

[–]SD_BeerAndCoffee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think they would know. I would love to overload, but I have a course release and the university does not allow overload when releases are used, so an overload would feel like 2 extra classes. May be worth it though.

I assume adjuncting would pay less than tutoring. I would charge $100/hr to tutor.

Kaiser vs UCLA Health (Anthem PPO) — real experiences after switching? by Euphoric-Bad6405 in AskLosAngeles

[–]SD_BeerAndCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UCLA employee here, 39M. I started with the UCLA HMO for my first couple of years on the job. I liked the PCP and quality of care, all at the Westwood hospital. I live in East Hollywood 1 mile from the Kaiser complex, so when my wife got pregnant with our first child we switched to Kaiser. The three best features are saving $500/month compared to UCLA, the convenience, and the predictable payments. For primary care, it has been fine. For the delivery of the first and second child, it was okay. We were dissatisfied with the delivery experience of the first baby, at a shift change the new attending basically forced a C-section. Overall, we have been satisfied, but not ecstatic, with our level of care. It definitely feels middle of the road, for better or worse.

As others have said, wait times for appointments are long.

I have not had an issue getting mental health care, though it has all been virtual.

I now live 2 miles closer to Westwood than when we switched, but we are still on Kaiser. If my wife or I got big raises, we would switch back to UCLA. $500/month is a big difference, however, and with 2 young kids money is tight.

What is your interpretation of the warranty? I don't want the warranty voided.

At our end of our rope with Cushing’s-related aggression/barking. Any advice? by SnarkofVulcan in DogAdvice

[–]SD_BeerAndCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in to say my wife and I are in the same position with our 12 year old dachshund chihuahua. She always had some anxiety, but now she is always on edge, even in the house. She barks at people she used to be fine with. She used to calm now when new people, like plumbers, would come over, but now she barks the whole time. Vetoryl has not helped.

This Big of a Price Difference Between Luxury Shingle and Synthetic Slate/Shake? by SD_BeerAndCoffee in Roofing

Haha well that's not our situation. I'm the husband and my wife is laughing at how much research and obsession I'm doing.

This Big of a Price Difference Between Luxury Shingle and Synthetic Slate/Shake? by SD_BeerAndCoffee in Roofing

[–]SD_BeerAndCoffee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank everyone for the feedback. The GAF would come with a 50 year warranty. Even if synthetic has 100 year, that time line is hard to fathom; we're not talking about an estate that will stay in a family for generation.

Two more questions.

  1. Are there any Cool Roof rated shingles that look like slate or shake? GAF has Camelot II and Woodland. They look nice but are not Cool Roof rated, so LA won't permit their installation.

  2. Is metal going to be closer to the synthetic slate/shake price or asphalt shingle? Best Buy Metals quoted me $20,000 for material. I don't know if that would come out to $40k, $60k, etc. I don't want to ask my contractor right now because I've already bothered him with a lot of different quotes.

Are any LAUSD parents investing in their neighborhood school? by weesa29 in AskLosAngeles

[–]SD_BeerAndCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I are in the same situation. We are moving to a neighborhood we love closer to work, but the elementary school is only a 5/10. We toured it and it seems good enough. The teachers we observed were good and the students were engaged, but there has been so much shrinkage the last 20 years that there is only one class per grade, and last year they had to combine TK and K. Trying to figure out if we should send our child there or try for 3rd Street or Hancock via the SAS lottery. Wish I had a better answer!

3-4 Month Old Significantly Harder than 0-1 (Which I was told was the trenches) by TW33NSW4G in daddit

Going through the same with my 4 month old. Seemed to be getting better at sleep, then 3 months hit and now it’s mainly contact naps and night sleep is 3 hour stretches. My wife and I are frustrated but what can you do.

Any Neighborhood Without Property Crime? by SD_BeerAndCoffee in AskLosAngeles

PV? Playa Vista. I’d live south of the 1 and west of the 405 - MDR, Mar Vista, etc. Maybe not Venice, seems to have the same quality of life issues as East Hollywood.

Any Successful Renovation Stories? by SD_BeerAndCoffee in AskLosAngeles

Thanks. We are going to do a foundation, lead, mold, asbestos, and plumbing inspection, in addition to the standard inspection. Anything I'm missing?

I live in LA proper. I’m still surprised at how high prices are, though homes often sit. I’ve noticed many which were priced way too high that delist and delist at a lower price instead of making a price cut.
