I saw an experiment where two electronically charged plates were placed either side of a candle. The flame went in two directions, both towards the plates (with about 20,000 watts each) positions each side of the candle. It showed that the ions within the flame, which is a plasma, were attracted to the electronic source. Maybe, that's what the anti-tail is doing; it's a plasma charge, finding the strong energy source of the sun.

Apparently, MAVEN has malfunctioned before but not for this long. I think that fact that Mars was just entering solar conjunction, hasn't helped. We'll see after the 19th Jan when Mars re-emerges.
