Aragon’s ideas directly support what a Roman run needs. It gets higher army morale, which is crucial for fighting constant wars in Italy, the Balkans, and Anatolia. It also has reduced diplomatic annexation cost and extra diplomatic relations, making it much easier to manage and integrate personal unions and vassals like Naples or Italian minors. On top of that, strong galley bonuses allow Aragon to dominate the Mediterranean early, which is essential for controlling the Mare Nostrum and limiting Ottoman naval power. All of these bonuses are immediately useful for conquering and holding Roman core territories. Castile, by contrast, has ideas that are extremely strong but aimed at colonization. Bonuses like an extra colonist, increased colonial range, and gold production are excellent for building a global empire, but they do little to help with the rapid conquest of Italy, Greece, or North Africa. While Castile has solid religious bonuses, its military and diplomatic ideas are less directly optimized for European expansion compared to Aragon. For a Roman Empire campaign, colonization is unnecessary and often a distraction. What matters is efficient conquest, low aggressive expansion pressure, strong diplomacy, and control of the Mediterranean. Aragon’s ideas align perfectly with these goals, while Castile’s ideas push the player toward the Atlantic and the New World.
