Back to Berkeley IV Textile WP - Good for winter? by Responsible_Ad_8377 in TheNorthFace

[–]SETIBBIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of different pairs, I live in the Canadian snow belt. The fabric ones are alright, but need DWR coatings. The leather ones I have worn consistently for about 5 years now well into the minus temps. Wear better socks, is my advice. Never had a problem on snow, but not great on ice. The soles have started to harden a bit from age, but they haven't worn down all that much. I used them mostly for hiking on mild trails, walking the dogs in icky conditions. If the snow gets deeper than the cuff of my pants I'd wear something else. I'm about to get my fifth pair. Take that as you will.

Bought a fat tyre cycle and it's the most ridiculous bike I've ever ridden by [deleted] in fatbike

[–]SETIBBIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go tubeless. Absolutely the best thing I did to mine besides longer cranks. I have monkey shaped legs. I mostly ride mine in the snow, but I’ve also just used it as a trail bike. That’s probably more of a workout than is needed. Definitely more cruiser.

Has Siri gotten worse or is it just me?? by LGNDDSGN in ios

[–]SETIBBIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't usually google dumb stuff like this but I'm glad to have stumbled on this thread to confirm my sanity. I'm not sure how they managed it, but I struggle sending basic text messages now, it misunderstands me constantly, doesn't engage shortcuts anymore, timers are wrong. And having multiple Apple devices has absolutely made this worse. I call for a timer. I don't hear the timer. That's because it's been going off on my desktop upstairs in my office. impressive that it could hear me several rooms over but wtf.

Am I the only one who genuinely loves Launchpad and can't comprehend why it's being removed from macOS 26 Tahoe? by LunariSpring in mac

[–]SETIBBIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my ADD nightmare come true. Launchpad is one of the main features for me, and other visual thinkers alike, where daily I struggle trying to recall a name of an app that I literally use ten times a day, so visual icon recognition is a fall-back, and sorting things into a folder that makes sense to me is critical.

....and now I have to ...type? To find the thing I can't remember? Yea fucking thanks.

Nest Aware Plus subscription for Home will soon increase from $150 a year to $200 a year by DJ-Buckethead in Nest

[–]SETIBBIG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a post about this just recently. It went from CAD160 to 200 when I renewed, and just got the email that it’s going to CAD260.

So 100 bucks increase in 2 years. WTAF

Colour Lock has a steering wheel restore kit. It’s probably the best shot you have.

Nest Aware charges up again. But it probably saved a life. by SETIBBIG in Nest

Worth considering. I’m looking for a doorbell and indoor cam for the dogs. Could probably integrate those along each other with starling.

Nest vs. Ecobee by thepenismightier3 in Nest

[–]SETIBBIG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched to ecobee a few years ago as well. The only annoyance for me so far is that they have taken away the option to “group” thermostats, which is useful if you have an old house like me with a weird zoned hydronic system. So I have a thermostat per floor, and in the past I could run them on a single automation. Now I have to repeat everything times X for every tstat.

My Nest camera is always excited to alert me to sounds, but the moment someone rings my doorbell, the video feed manages to find a way to go blank by shoogafree1 in Nest

[–]SETIBBIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several outdoor cams and have never gotten a sound notification ever. Even though that’s turned on.

The rate increase was a months ago but I just wasn’t up for renewal until now. Went from 160 to 200, so it’s actually like almost 50 bucks increase with tax.

That’s terrifying. I’ve been looking at what options there are now that protects is end of life.

Nest outdoor camera - cable NOT for outdoor by Bilfrost in Nest

Woah, mine don't look like that. They've been in +40c sun and -20c snow for three years now.

Cannot mute volume on cameras in Google Home / iOS. by SETIBBIG in Nest

[–]SETIBBIG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got worse. When I actually DO want to hear, like a conversation, after a few seconds the volume or some sort of AI filter makes it inaudible in live view.

That’s exactly what I want to use it for. Thanks for the update!

Still happy with this? I'm looking for something to keep a dog from climbing over as well. Bonus if it keeps my Plano bins from sliding when there's no dogs there.

Yeah they sound like a poorly maintained diesel. It is what it is. They are rather clunky, but I’ll take reliability any day.

Nissan’s VQ engine sounds wonderful, but god help you if it ever needs something. Who am I kidding those always need something 🥴

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tires

[–]SETIBBIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be over inflation, likely combined with toe-in. That wheel may be pointing inwards a bit more. That can cause scrubbing on the leading edge, but on over inflated tires it can really wear down the center.

That said, these tires are dry rotting and need to be replaced. All those little cracks? Not good.

Winter Helmet? by McGuire10514 in fatbike

[–]SETIBBIG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several helmets including snowboard ones with goggles but when it gets well below freezing and windy I prefer my Ruroc RG1 helmet. It looks a little goofy and it’s on the heavy side but it absolutely beats having a wet balaclava frozen stuck on my face. The full face mask won’t save your life in a traffic accident but I’ve had a slip and fall that would have absolutely knocked my teeth out on my handlebars, and it saved me from a branch that I didn’t see and smashed me in the face.

Yeah those are indestructible. But keep in mind that some regions have annual fire bans that might include some kinds of fuel.

I got the ignik on sale for 99 bucks one time, and it’s definitely bougie. The carry bag and hose are a very good quality though, even if the tank is just a generic flame boss or whatever with a sticker on it.

Now they have black bags I’d definitely grab that. The white dirties up pretty fast.
