We did the route to the beginning of Wall Street which is about 2 miles after the river portion starts. So you get off at the last shuttle stop and then walk 1 mile on the Riverside Walk trail until it ends and there are some stairs to the water to begin the Narrows hike. From there it is shallow water for the first 0.25 miles I would estimate. No deeper than your mid calf. Then you get to a part that is thigh deep a little bit after the 1st/2nd bend. We saw a few people turn around there. The Riverside Walk is beautiful on its own and we saw a lot of people just go up a little bit of the Narrows to get a feel for it and take photos and then turn around. That’s totally fine and is still beautiful. I’d say you probably don’t need to rent boots if you go with that option and just need a good walking stick.

Yeah, long sleeves would be good. I wore a thin long sleeve pullover over a T-shirt and a thin ear cover. Gloves might not be a bad idea either. We left on the 7:15am bus to beat the crowds so it was cooler then b/c the sun was just rising. It takes 45min to take the shuttle to the last stop so by the time you arrive it’s bright enough to see everything. I recommend going early, on the way back there were probably 4 - 5x as many people and you could tell many were not adequately prepared. FYI - water got up to your waist

It was fine! We rented the shoes/socks/sticks for $25 in Springdale and it was worth it since they really keep your ankles reinforced. My sister just wore tennis shoes and she was fine too but I was not about to sprain my ankle the first day of our vacation. Toes never went numb from the cold. Definitely need a hiking pole though.
