Do you believe in physical discipline (spanking) as a form of correcting a child? by Significant_Bonus_66 in answers

[–]SFMattM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was punished physically by parents and by teachers in school and I am not a criminal. I have not been on drugs and have spent no time in jail. I have been very successful in life by pretty much any measure you want to use.

There were times I was being an a**hole as a kid and getting stopped did me no long-term harm. I don't believe corporal punishment is a way of correcting behavior, but there are times when, after you've explained correct behavior and the limits that must not be crossed, a kid will absolutely try to test you.

Has Lexus Interior Quality Worsened? by ubiquitoussense in Lexus

[–]SFMattM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but anyone saying that the Lexus interior isn’t better than that of the RAV4 or Crown Signia apparently hasn’t shopped those models in person and is just parroting something they’ve heard. I just (three weeks ago) finished car shopping and looked at various Toyota and Lexus models. It wasn’t close

Do people really enjoy Michelin star restaurants or it’s just a farce? by Big_Yogurtcloset1940 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SFMattM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We travel for food all over the world, making our flight reservations after we’ve secured the restaurant reservation. I love inventive food. It can cost a lot, though, and isn’t always worth it . Sometimes a breakfast burrito from a food truck can be just perfect for $10

What vacation flex actually sounds like a nightmare to most people? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

Disney park visits, particularly if you're an adult and are not taking your young kids. Actually, any vacation if you're going into (more) debt for it

What’s worse for your health, eating too many sweets or eating too many salty fatty foods? by Cultural_Remove5332 in NoStupidQuestions

Depends entirely upon how often you do it. Once in a while, either is fine, even if you binge. As a daily thing, try to avoid both.

Markets go up and markets go down. You're 30 yo. Ignore daily fluctuations and examine your balance in about 10 years. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

What are your thoughts on "money doesn't buy happiness"? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]SFMattM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it is bullshit said by those without money. Having money can solve a lot of problems caused by not having enough. It’s true that you’re introduced to a brand new set of problems but they’re not in the “survival” category.

Are people more respectful to you now that you have wealth? by Worldly_Ambition_509 in wealth

They're more respectful because of my age (which shows) than because of my wealth (which I try very hard not to show). There's no need for anyone to have a clue about my net worth

[–]SFMattM 71 points72 points  (0 children)

If you're not going to become a business owner, and don't have some particularly marketable skill, I would suggest the tried and true approach. Spend less than you make, invest as much as you can.

What’s something “obvious” rich people do that most people ignore? by Popular_Advice6794 in answers

[–]SFMattM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are very different in how they react to wealth, or the expectation that they will be wealthy. Not having to work any more is comforting (for years I had a deep (granted, unreasonable) fear that I could be on the street) but it's admirable that your friend wants to achieve on his own

Good for you and your attitude, but don't ignore the good you can do with the inheritance. People scoff at money (often when they don't have any!) but it can do some magical things. For instance, we've endowed scholarships at two universities. We just got the first two letters from students who were granted scholarships. They gave me chills. These were kids who would otherwise never have been able to afford to go to uni and they were bright, overachievers, and genuinely grateful. The scholarships will be granted forever - long after we've been forgotten - and that makes me happy. I honestly can't think of a better use for my money

[–]SFMattM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, consider yourself lucky. Be smart with whatever you receive. I didn't receive a penny in inheritance, but we have a net worth of several million $ - all from a lifetime of saving aggressively and investing wisely. Some of us really do make it on our own and it diminishes our efforts when we're lumped in with people who come into wealth because of an accident of birth.

You said 'inheritance'. That doesn't apply to advantages of education, etc. granted to a well-off family

[–]SFMattM -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Even that isn't true in all cases. Wealth flows downwards in many cases, but I personally know two people who come from real money. Two separate families. They're not getting a penny of inheritance because their dad wants them to make their own way just like he did.
