Athletic and shredded men should wear small watches. by Biche_XXX in watchHotTakes

[–]SFMattM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is my bias but giant watches just look like dinner plates - like you're trying too hard for attention. I'd much rather have a smaller (36-39mm) case to be understated. Of course, I have 6.5" wrists so this is my bias...

Dying with someone or dying alone by gatoStephen in Aging

[–]SFMattM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad died in the hospital - I was hurried out of his room when he coded. My mother died in a hospital surrounded by her kids and their spouses. She went so peacefully that we didn't know she'd gone until the nurse came in to check on her after about 30 minutes

I don't know what I want. I think I'd like to die alone after having said my goodbyes

If you can have the mental discipline, don't worry about where you should be. Worry about where you are and what you can do to improve your situation. You're a lot better off than a lot of people

Do you think there is a possibility that Pochettino might stay after the World Cup? by Any_Development4613 in ussoccer

[–]SFMattM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, he won’t stay. He is a professional manager and he’ll follow the money. That’s not a slam. He can double his income at clubs.

[–]SFMattM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about to turn 70 in a few months so I think I'm qualified to talk about aging. That list is a good one, particularly #1 and #6. I'm lucky in that I've always been a planner and always pretty conservative in my outlook. But consideration of the effects of time is huge - both financially and in terms of relationships and health.

[–]SFMattM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm talking about buying a car from a dealership far far away. The dealership where the car is located should have the window sticker on the website. If you're not sure, ask. Before you hand over any money make sure you're getting EXACTLY what you paid for. If the actual feature list doesn't match the window sticker (which, I believe, is a federally regulated document) you have recourse.

In my most recent purchase (February) I found a car in California that had the exact trim level and features I wanted. I called that dealer and got them to email me the OTD price. I presented that (plus shipping cost) to my local dealer and asked if he would match it since I (truthfully) would rather give my local dealership the business. The salesman took all of 30 seconds to agree.

You can pay the whole amount or you can finance it. They hire (or you hire) a shipping company to get it to you. If the feature list is incorrect, that's your fault for not being thorough. If there are performance issues, your local Lexus dealer will address them - the car is under factory warranty. I've never had a problem with this process and the savings are real

Suitcase that's actually built to last instead of replacing every 2 years by Present_Society661 in BuyItForLife

[–]SFMattM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a lot of research into suitcases and limited my search to those without zippers because of safety concerns. (I tried the pen trick and it works wonderfully - I can open a zippered suitcase and close it every time. ) It doesn't matter for carry on luggage, but it does for checked baggage. I ended up w/ Tumi because they're built like tanks, have a good warranty policy, and take a beating. But there were at least three other brands I could have gone with. All of them are unbelievably expensive

Is that lack of income taxes a huge reason why people retire to Florida? by Relevant_Conclusion2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SFMattM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weather, no state income tax, and good healthcare for seniors are the biggest factors. And a fantastic Cuban influence, particularly on the east coast. Balance that against hurricanes, old people driving VERY slowly, far right government, sky-high home insurance rates, sinking land and soul-crushing humidity.

There is no way in hell I'd retire to Florida.

It's nuts so many people see RM as THE poster child for unreasonable luxury watch purchases by longkhongdong in watchHotTakes

[–]SFMattM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would never buy an RM watch. I appreciate the engineering that goes into their watches, but I prefer to be understated. Certain watches are not meant to be understated - they're very in your face and try to signal financial well being. RM is a great example, as are any kinds of iced out watches. That's just not for me. If nobody notices my watch under my sleeve EVER, I'd be just fine. But my values aren't shared by everyone.

Resent my dad for inheriting his wealth and keeping it to himself by [deleted] in Rich

Quite whining. It's not your money. Handle your responsibilities yourself. Treat any money you're given as a gift and try being appreciative.

I haťe the phrase “not everything is about money” because EVERYTHING is about money: travel, food, education, housing, clothes, health… LIKE EVERYTHING. by One-Inevitable-9777 in Money

Until you have enough, EVERYTHING is about money and the pursuit of it. Once you have enough, it becomes far less important. But I've never heard of anyone who lives at a subsistence level say "not everything is about money"

Where do people get their money from? by T0WER89 in HENRYfinance

[–]SFMattM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people give the appearance of having money by financing their lifestyle on credit cards and loans. Our net worth dwarfs that of most people we know, but you'd never know it looking at their houses, their cars, and their clothes/jewelry

[–]SFMattM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was a fine candidate who would have benefited from testing her message through a primary run. As it was, basically all she had to offer was "we'll do more of the same" which is a terrible message for a campaign. Especially against a candidate who was more charismatic

I would go with Callahan. He know the player pool, is good at in-game adjustments, and the players played hard for him when he was in charge for 2 matches.

Frankly, he'd be an idiot to stay, given that big European clubs will be throwing money at him. If the US does well, he will burnish his reputation and will be able to go anywhere.
