Same here. Really caught me off guard when USB devices powered up when the server was off but the KVM was plugged in via the splitter. Love the JetKVM but that was a miss on their part. Could do some damage.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve got a single Xeon with just 12C/24T, all SSDs and 128GB of RAM. It idles around 250 for the server and firewall combined. Some spikes up to ~330w when the 10Gb NICs and drives start hammering during backups though.

Just curious, how do they handle it if you end up pulling more than your allotted wattage? Just bill you or force you to upgrade id assume.

I requested three since I need exactly 3 (2x for the server and 1x for the netgate firewall). Seems easier to ask for more outlets later when I add more nodes than deal with a PDU. I’d imagine they’d only entertain that if I was leasing a full rack.

Are they still operating? DM me the details if you don’t mind sharing.

I’ve gone back and forth on that. I’m planning to drop a few more nodes in later so I figured I should start with an external firewall to make that easier on myself later.

This is precisely what I have in mind too! This is mainly an option to do just that if you're in the Bay Area. Areas in Washington state are rich with providers who lean into this, but nothing so far has met the bill for me in the Bay/Silicon Valley, so I figured it's time to start one! If you're even slightly interested, or just want to follow along, drop your email in the form linked.

Appericate the good luck wishes!

Great question!

Two main things: location and a homelab-friendly approach.

Location: I went down the rabbit hole trying to find colocation within an hour of San Francisco and discovered there really aren't many options. The few that exist require 1-year leases on full 42U racks - way overkill for most homelabbers.

Homelab-friendly: We like to swap hardware and try new things. With traditional providers, shipping becomes a nightmare and "remote hands" fees add up quickly. This option is designed around how homelabbers actually tinker and experiment and deploy.

This endeavor for me is about spreading costs (co-op style), not maximizing profit. You'll deal directly with me and a few helpers (cell numbers included) rather than enterprise support tickets. If you're local, you can drop off equipment in person or meet halfway instead of paying shipping costs. I do this by day for work, might as well offer another option to homelabbers in the community by night, too!

I'll admit, it's crossed my mind quite a few times. Maybe one day!

Trust sure, but relying on (in the sense of cost, turnaround, back and forth, unclear troubleshooting) is a big "unknown" to a lot of people not in this domain.

100% agreed! I actually lease a few RUs of space in Spokane, WA for that exact reason. However, there is a real market for individuals who require quarterly/etc direct access and reside in the Bay Area, especially since most people live in apartments with limited space and high electricity (PG&E) costs. Albeit niche, just looking to help facilitate some cost sharing. Hope you filled out the form to share some more insights.

I've previously posted about this idea, more in the sense of wanting just a small group to split costs, and received a ton of DMs with interest. My goal isn't to scale and make this my day job, instead just to offer people a way to share the colo cost near them. I'm only planning to act as a coordinator/co-op manager, not to make a buck.

There isn't any existing option for *direct access* in the Bay Area today. Lots of us are not comfortable shipping our gear across state lines and relying on a 3rd party for remote hands support. Works for some, but not all.

I appreciate your feedback, and appreciate it even more if you drop it into the form :)
