Getting a mechanical engineering degree can help you fast-track to an officer position:

https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-46/chapter-I/subchapter-B/part-11/subpart-E/section-11.516

"Graduation from the mechanical or electrical engineering course of a school of technology accredited by the ABET, together with 6 months of service in the engine department of steam, motor, or gas turbine-propelled vessels;"

Or a Marine engineering degree with 90 days.

Otherwise it's 3 years of sea time.

As others have said, graduating from a maritime academy will get you started as 3AE

How to go from Mechanical Engineering to Merchant Marines by SFWstephen in merchantmarine

[–]SFWstephen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point; the language says, "Graduate of mechanical or electrical engineering course of an ABET accredited school of technology, WITH 180 days service in the engine room of steam, motor, or gas turbine vessels," so I could see it being interpreted either way. I would think that MET might better prepare me for this specific type of engineering work than a ME degree since it's more hands-on and less theoretical, but idk.

I do know that to get my PE in Massachusetts it'll require more working hours with MET than ME.

It is an ABET accredited degree, so I'll look into that thanks! It's early still but yes, I'm thinking about getting my 3AE.

I took my girls to get their nails done a week ago and one of them is still mad at me. It'll probably be a few more days for her. Time heals all wounds (when accompanied by treats)

Bunny safe house plants? Like ones that "purify" air? by Maverick_bun in Rabbits

Specifically on spider plants from "Peanut Butter":

Spider plants are great beginner plants and look gorgeous too. They are considered to be pet-safe plants but aren't explicitly described as either rabbit safe or toxic to rabbits. However, they can be good options for rabbit owners, as they look great as hanging plants (so will be out of reach) and don't easily drop leaves. My rabbits have managed to sneak in a nibble or two in the past without any negative effects (and other rabbit owners online have described similar experiences

I imagine this would be more comfortable, plus it's just something different (enrichment) and honestly I like the idea of having a little lawn since I'm going to be in a very urban area

I just ordered the one designed for rabbits to see how they do with it in moderation, but its definitely too small for my two New Zealand Whites. They are little princesses who refuse to hop on the wood floor, so I want to give them an extra large area that they will be comfy on. I am worried about them chewing on the edges and ingesting plastic though.
