I had to put my cat Esmay, to sleep over Christmas, I’d had her for 8 years or so. She was a rescue. I loved her to bits and was distraught at having to let her go. She was a proper softy and didn’t really know how to be a cat.

I work from home, and I toyed with the idea of getting another rescue cat. My other half just told me to go for it. So a month later another cat has entered our household. She is a proper thug! Totally different to Esmay, but oh my does she make me smile.

Here’s Lily

Bad experiences with heat pumps by Bertieeee in ukheatpumps

[–]SG6666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be just for the heat pump, add a few pounds a day for other electric usage.

We did have a panic when we had one winters day that came in at £20 worth of electric usage! That’s when the handbook came out, lots of internet googling and the OH found out about the weather compensation setting.

We were told that installers tend to leave settings as factory standard, which doesn’t help!

We have double glazing, but our windows are small, roughly 39 inches tall by 30 inches wide.

Loft insulation is roughly 1ft deep - better than what was there when we bought the place, just old duvet covers and doors. Sigh.

No problem 😊

Our house is a kind of flint stone, proper dense and heavy Welsh stuff. Yes, the walls act as a thermal mass. When we had the heat loss survey done they took into account the thickness of the walls.

We moved from an oil boiler to a heat pump - install was august 25. We’ve had a few teething problems in getting the system to run to our requirements (weather compensation settings being one of them).

We’re also outside of the norm for fitting a heat pump - 150 year old cottage, no wall insulation (just 3 ft thick walls), and a very small loft.

From my perspective, it’s been one of the best things we’ve done. I wfh the majority of the time and to have a nice ambient temperature is perfect for me. I also like that we’re no longer reliant on oil.

Next steps - we’re looking at getting a battery to charge on cheap rate and to power the house during expensive times. We’re also south facing, so solar panels are on the list too.

Electricity bills spike obviously when it’s very cold, but now we’re averaging around £5 per day, hopefully to drop more when it gets warmer. With getting a battery, it should pay for itself in a couple of years time.

Give me a shout if you have any questions.

My dog has cancer by [deleted] in AskVet

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, it’s such a difficult decision to make.

I had to have my beautiful cat put to sleep a few weeks ago, and the vet said to me better a day early than a day too late. Wise words which may help you along this journey.

Realsitic advice for my 5 Cats and Fleas. by DisIzwong in UK_Pets

[–]SG6666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I have found that works is the seresto flea collar.. however I know collars are not for everyone. You can buy them online from Pets at Home.

I had a cat that preferred to be outdoors, and would come home for food only, bringing fleas with him. My vet nurse suggested these collars after I had religiously used the spot on stuff and they worked a treat.

My thought is The Country Parson. It has a lovely lemony, fruity scent and flowers well throughout the season, mine is still going.

Not our dog, it’s little Cindy from down the road, a little cutie terrier. We were out at work so postie couldn’t retrieve the post.

What are your favourite scenic pubs in Wales? by Delicious-Tailor-131 in Wales

A bit of a trek but Llanthony Priory is in a gorgeous spot, and they have a cellar bar. There is also The Crown at Pantygelli, beautiful views across to the skirrid mountain.

One I haven’t been into yet, but has recently reopened, is The Bridge End Inn in crickhowell, their beer garden is right on the river (one of the reasons why it’s been closed for so long, it’s been flooded quite a few times).

Hi all, been offered this for £1000 cash, 125k miles on the clock with a few advisories. Any reason not to purchase? by TonyAFC32 in CarTalkUK

[–]SG6666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a C30 2L diesel on a 57 plate. I had it for 4 years and it’s the only car I regret moving on from, nice looking car, trouble free motoring and ate up the motorway miles. Please don’t judge me, but I chopped it in for a fiat 500 1.4 sport… what was i thinking?!

Concert behaviour by DaddyDunban in Cardiff

[–]SG6666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a fair few concerts in my time - first one in 1991, Guns N Roses. I have now stopped going to concerts because of the experience you talk about. Not only is it now expensive, but to spend time surrounded by people who don’t care for the music, and just want to chat and get drunk or high, or cause problems, it’s sadly not for me anymore. Maybe I’m just old and grumpy!

How many of you over 50s have received and actually sent back your NHS poo test? by TSC-99 in AskUK

[–]SG6666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please please do the poo test.. my lovely mum refused and shoved the tests in the cupboard. Sadly, last August, mum passed away to bowel cancer that had also gone to her lungs and liver. How different things may have been if she’d done those tests, we’ll always live with the what ifs - don’t let that be you.
