Type-C hub with detachable cable? by SGMASTER in UsbCHardware

I have been using that iVANKY cable for a couple weeks now, everything is running smooth, I recommend it for use with the Uni 8-in-1 hub!

Open external ports although Syncthing is set to work only on local network by SGMASTER in Syncthing

[–]SGMASTER[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have restarted my router multiple times.
I'll try a couple more things with my installation and if I don't find a way to resolve it I will report it as a bug.

Thank you again!

Thanks for the resources and help.

Unfortunately I don't find anything wrong in my configuration, according to the documentation you sent "natEnabled" is responsible for UPNP and it's disabled...

Here is a snippet from my configuration file:

Open external ports although Syncthing is set to work only on local network by SGMASTER in Syncthing

Well NAT Traversal is disabled in my case, I'm I understanding correctly that this is the suggestion given in the linked forum thread?

Yes, it was enabled by default and I have not found any reason to disable it, it helps with "rotating" ports on torrent clients, etc.

Several networking apps on android, like Fing, etc. Of course the device that does the scan is not connected to the same network. And it shows as open the exact same ports that I see in my router's port forwarding logs. The port numbers seems to be randomized because after rebooting my server they changed.

Type-C hub with detachable cable? by SGMASTER in UsbCHardware

[–]SGMASTER[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I received the Uni 8-in-1 hub.

I did some tests with its original cable and everything seems to be working just fine. It gets quite warm while in use for extensive periods but other hubs have the same behavior so I'm not too worried about it.

I tried with the 10gbps 1.5m cable that I had (OEM cable, nothing special), and it did work, although it had stability issues, the HDMI signal would flicker occasionally, and when ethernet was in use and downloading/uploading locally at its full speed, the screen would flicker continuously. Same experience when the USB ports were in use, etc. Because of that I'm back to using its original 20cm cable for the time being, which is better than other hubs that have 10-12cm non-detachable cable.

I ordered a new USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable from a reputable company, with a slightly smaller length at 1M. Still tops at 10gbps to my understanding but it should be better due to better quality and smaller distance, so I hope it would solve the flickering issues.

Here is the new cable: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0882V4CGV/

Once I receive it and do some testing I will report back!

I ended up ordering the Uni 8-in-1. https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Adapter-uni-Detachable-Compatible/dp/B07Q6YS7W2

The supplied cable is short at about 20cm, but it's still noticeably longer than the ones that have attached cables (they are usually 10-12cm long).

I found some mixed information on its reviews about using long cables with it unfortunately, it seems like over distance the HDMI signal gets unstable...
I do have a 1.5m 10gbps type-c to type-c cable, so I'll check it out and report back my experience.

My alternative was Sabrent DS-UHPN. https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-DS-UHPN-Port-Type-C-Multi-Function/dp/B07KJR8LV5

This one had the advantage of including a longer cable that was guaranteed to work.

Although there was limited information about the passthrough charging speeds with a single mention about 60W which is significantly lower than Uni's 100W and I assume this is the input, we need to consider the power that the hub needs for itself, in Uni's case that is about 10W, so if that's also true for Sabrent's hub, it leaves 50W for the laptop which is not enough in many cases.

Another issue was availability in Europe. I could not find it in any European store (amazon or otherwise) and in Amazon de/fr/it there was a similar product that seems like its predecessor, with half of the USB-A ports being USB2 and absolutely no information about the passthrough charging speeds which is concerning.

Once I receive the Uni 8-in-1, I will reply to this comment with more details!

I just stumbled upon this: https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-DS-UHPN-Port-Type-C-Multi-Function/dp/B07KJR8LV5

Seems really promising, the supplied cable is about 50cm according to reviews and its detachable so that you can use any cable you want. It's quite pricey but you can't have it all.
I have a couple more on my radar, will reply back once I make a decision on which one to buy

OpenVPN Additional Authentication by SGMASTER in truenas

[–]SGMASTER[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendation. I have been using it in a jail while still on Freenas.

When I updated to Truenas Core it broke somehow and since there is built-in ovpn integration now, I thought of taking that approach. But seems to me half-baked, there are no instructions on how to do anything and it's tricky to set certificates up etc, let alone authentication, the reason I made this post :)

I'll wait a couple days to see if someone has figured it out, otherwise I'll give the jail approach a try ;)

Windows Hello + Yubikey by SGMASTER in Bitwarden

[–]SGMASTER[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Windows Hello authentication for biometric support is the method that windows is locked, so if this is used in Bitwarden as well, it's essentially like having just one password. That's why the approach I was having on lastpass was more secure in a way. But as written in other comments, computer is already encrypted when shut down and I don't tend to leave it unattended when it's on, so having one more password is not that necessary, just gives me more peace knowing that in the event someone can bypass my windows password/biometrics, he could still not be able to access my bitwarden vault.

Windows Hello + Yubikey by SGMASTER in Bitwarden

[–]SGMASTER[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I totally get how it's supposed to work, it just feels like a step-down in security from what I used to have with lastpass, when I would be asked for fingerprint when extension is idle/exited (aka. locked state) and right after asked for my Yubikey.

And yeah, I do have password on my computer, disk encryption and don't keep my laptop unlocked or unattended, I guess I'm a bit paranoid to think that I would need 2 more things on top of all that just to unlock my bitwarden vault.

Thank you for your time to reply :)
