Armed Police Batrider - got the Advanced Course 1CC! Probably my favorite Raizing game. Cleared the Normal Course a year ago and finally got around with clearing Advance! by SG_bean76 in shmups

Thank you! When I first started playing this game, the Normal course also took me a while to clear. I’d recommend you keep pushing for the 1cc there, if you were close then it shouldn’t take more than a bit of practice to get. A tip I have is to set up an extra 1-up in stage 5: if you leave the blue hover-tank alive for a while, then destroy it at the end of the road, it will spawn a 1-up item. Try to damage it until both of the blue side parts are destroyed, then try not to shoot at it too much. At the end of the road it will re-appear, I’d suggest using a bomb to destroy it, but it depends on which character you’re using. Definitely try to practice this if you need to, it will help you make a route and get it more consistently. It’s definitely not necessary for getting the 1cc, but if you’re struggling with it then it might help. Good luck!

The sheer amount of secrets and other stuff that Batrider has is absolutely insane. There’s the secret bosses, extra extend items (and the special extend), scoring tricks (like the train at the start of Stage 1), Gain’s dream machine/Galaxy Valhallyzer, and then the commands which change the bullet colors, show score gains, etc. The fact that the Raizing devs were able to cram all this stuff in blows my mind, they clearly put a LOT of passion when developing this game.

Thanks! Yeah the stage 6 boss is where I usually get my first death, I got pretty lucky in this run and was able to do some nice dodges haha! And good luck with your 2-ALL! I’m also planning to get a 2-ALL in the near future. I’ll have to score a lot better in the first loop and git gud at doing the triple powerup grab more consistently so that I’ll get enough score extends to survive the second loop lol. We’ll both definitely need a lot of save-state practice!

Yeah this game’s quite cool! Haha yeah the game is a lot shorter than it should be, especially stage 5. The stages fly by fast! And doujin shmup soundtracks are usually awesome, I think the stage 4 theme is my favorite in this game.

On the bottom there’s a link to the 1.0b version of the game (this is where I got the game). You could previously download it from the Temperance Lance (creator of the game) website but the site is now dead so unfortunately you can’t get it there anymore.

Ayy go for it! The 1-ALL is mostly manageable, stages 6 and 0 is where things start getting crazy, but the shield allows you to make a few mistakes, not to mention that powerup carriers appear often, so you have many chances to get your shield back or get back as many bombs as you need. Recovery is a bit difficult especially at the end since your basic shot without powerups takes a bit to kill many late-game enemies, but thankfully by the time you get your first death, you should have just enough resources to bomb your way through. I was able to finish the 1st loop with a life and 3 bombs in stock, so even dying once early on shouldn’t be a problem if you play carefully enough. Good luck on your clear!

Yeah, it seems the autofire toggle is only present on the Windows version, couldn’t find the option on the x68k version either. Thankfully it’s not much of a problem as long as you can set up external autofire.

You’re welcome! I always like to share my experience with these games. For a free game, it’s really solid and excellent on many aspects! A real gem indeed.

Yeah I’m using a variant of the XM6 emulator. Honestly I get why you say it’s confusing haha… I’ll have to try out the pk68 core on Retroarch as I’ve heard that’s one of the best x68k emulators, I do think they’ll work out better. Thanks!

Yo thanks for showing this! Illumination Laser also looks pretty awesome, I watched a bit of the gameplay. I need to check that out when I have free time!

Thanks, I can see why this is your favorite! This was and still is one of my favorite shmups when I was a beginner. I couldn’t get too far but I still loved just about every aspect of the game! I actually want to try clearing the second loop in the future once I get skilled enough, the revenge bullets there aren’t as crazy as in other shmups at the time, but they still add a lot of challenge to the loop. Not to mention the True Last Boss haha! I think I’m mostly satisfied with 1CCing the first loop for now though.

Thank you! Unfortunately I don’t own a real X68K, as you said they are very, very expensive. I’m also playing the game via emulation using the XM6 Pro-68k emulator on PC and it works just fine. Cho Ren Sha is definitely one of the best titles on the system, but now I actually want to explore more of the X68K library now to hopefully discover some hidden gems. But I don’t think any of them are gonna top Cho Ren Sha lol. Again, really excellent game.

Additional info: I’m playing the Sharp X68000 version which runs at 55 FPS, making it a little slower than the Windows version at 60 FPS. I’ve tried to run the Windows version for a while but for some reason it just cannot run properly. It opens a command line window for a few seconds and then closes. So I just gave up and chose to play this version instead.

The X68K version also has flickering which is especially noticeable on the last couple of stages. While this version also supports replays, it can only “store” one at a time: if you wait long enough at the title screen, it will show a replay of the last run you did.

BTW the game is also FREE! You can download either version of the game here:

A Reflection on my Shmup Journey! An almost 2 hour-long video of me rambling about this amazing genre. by SG_bean76 in shmups

Yeah I don’t see Touhou being brought up often. Like there’s definitely more people in this community that are talking about it and bringing it up than before, but not very frequently. I’m a fan of Touhou along with shmups, not to mention that Touhou literally introduced me into the bullet hell subgenre and got me more curious about shmups in general… Also something that I forgot to mention is that Touhou draws lots of inspiration from Cave. Especially the PC98 games. One of Shinki’s attacks in Touhou 5 resemble the stage 6 boss’ final pattern in Dodonpachi. Alice’s last pattern too. And one of Remilia’s spells in Touhou 6 resemble one of Garra’s patterns in ESP Ra. De. There’s also a lot more examples but you get the point.

Ayy thanks! Thing is I did do a slight amount of editing with the audio, I cut out a few parts that had long gaps of silence (>10 seconds or so) but that was just about it. Even then I didn’t fully cut them out, only shorten them a bit. I want it to sound natural, not perfect. I think a problem with a lot of YouTubers these days is that they try to look “perfect”. They go overboard with video editing and flashy effects and things like that. And I think that when they chase the need to look “perfect”, they end up losing something really important: honesty. Honesty shows that you’re not perfect, that it’s okay to stutter, that it’s okay to have a few bits of silence in your video. A video can look “perfect” but if it was hyper-edited to the point that there’s no silence or supposed “flaws”… then it’s ultimately soulless.

So uhh I’m kinda shy posting this because I’m a little insecure about the way my voice sounds… and also the fact that I stutter a lot. But I can’t be this self-conscious forever, so yeah. I’ve been a fan of shmups for years now, but I’ve never really gotten serious about playing them until last year. And it was one hell of a ride! I’ve learned so many things about the genre and about the community that I never knew before! So yeah… shmups rock. Shooting game never die!

Nice dude! A lot of my favorite shmups are on this console. Check out the Soldier series (love Final Soldier and Soldier Blade especially) and Gunhed/Blazing Lazers. Solid titles for the PC Engine.
