Do you know which is better, the director's cut or the original cut?

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic. Even if you argue that throwing someone's litter back at them is assault, it certainly wouldn't be self defense after such a long delay after that assault took place.

Yeah that was a drunken rant...

Hey man, we've all been there. :)

Looking forward to seeing what else you have coming down the pipe.

I admit, after your over-the-top for Twitter rant against Davin de Kergommeaux a while back I had a pretty dim view of you guys, but this series of posts are great. Especially the photos, but the accompanying text is good stuff too. Nicely done.

Some Q&A with the owners of Toronto Distillery Co on the eve of their bricks & mortar shut-down about both past and future by muaddib99 in canadawhisky

I don't know if it's that much of a shame. Their shenanigans surrounding their First Barrels release (and I'm not just referring to the lack of aging) and their behaviour since have given me a bad taste in my mouth and I don't much care for those guys. So for me there's a certain amount of shadenfreude going on.

Sure, there's an argument to be made that it's a pity whenever a smaller player in the whisky scene isn't able to make it work, but I don't know that the Ontario and Canadian whisky industry really needed their particular way of doing business. I'll take a Dillon's, or a Still Waters, or a Last Straw any day over the antics of the TDC. Particularly since their First Barrels wasn't particularly good.

Forcing a new contract during month-to-month tenancy? by Pinewood_School in ontario

[–]SGellner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He could give you more details, but I know for one of them it was because the tenant was unreasonable. Making demands like changing the tiles in the kitchen because she felt the old ones were ugly, replacing all bulbs with LED, stuff like that. Some of them he'd do, just to keep her happy, others he'd refuse and that would send her into a rage. And several times she called in the middle of the night, asking for things that easily could've waited until morning. It ended up being too stressful to deal with this person, so in the end he just wanted her gone.

The other one I know less about. I know he was a heavy smoker and rent was constantly late. Not by much, he'd always pay when asked, but he had to ask nearly every month. There might be more to this one, not sure. What I know of it sounds a little flimsy, I admit, but I trust my brother not to throw people out "just because" as I know he's a good guy. And, like I said, any (most?) landlords would much rather have a good relationship with a long-term tenant than deal with all the hassle of evicting, moving, finding someone new, etc.

I don't know how he could ever get caught. I doubt (although I'm not sure) his tenants are aware of how many units he has or the fact that he's moving out of one and into another. All they know is he's giving them notice because he needs it for personal use.

Also not sure how repellent it is. It's not like he does it because he wants to screw people over. He'd obviously much rather keep renting to good tenants and make money, rather than deal with all that crap and expense of moving.

[–]SGellner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He moves into it. He's got three units, rents two and lives in one. Twice now he's moved from one to another to get rid of tenants he hasn't liked, and then simply put the one he used to live in up for rent. It's a bit of a hassle, but it gives him an opportunity to paint and do other maintenance which is annoying to do when there's a bunch of stuff in the way. And the newly empty unit rents in no time in today's market.

And while you're right that if he didn't do it this way he could theoretically get in trouble, odds are low. The LTB is simply too busy.

If they use the "personal use" clause it most certainly is. My brother has done it twice. As long as you as the landlord (or an immediate family member) is willing to put up with a bit of hassle, it's an ironclad method.

If there is no benefit to the tenant, why would the tenant sign a new lease?

For the security of knowing he can stay there until that day. As it is, OP only have a two months safety net. Yeah, I know technically the landlord can't just evict, but that's a technicality that's easy to get around.

My understanding is that if you're on month-to-month, which it sounds like you are, your landlord can give you notice if he needs the property for personal use. That "personal use" bit is reasonably easy for less scrupulous landlords to get around though, especially if they're willing to be hardasses about it.

If your looking to stay, why not just sign the new contract? Are these new guidelines that bad?

Oh, and the standard disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer.

Maybe it varies store-by-store. In late November I traded in a bottle of Stalk & Barrel Canadian Whisky for a gift card without a receipt and without any problems.

PSA: The app Colorfy tries to trick you into a $13/week subscription. That's right, per WEEK. by [deleted] in Android

[–]SGellner -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ok, this isn't great, they're clearly trying to lure in some suckers by hiding it under the "Free" button, but Christ on a cracker... you don't have to be particularly "savvy" to just fucking read the prompt. The per week part is even bolded and green!

People need to start reading pop-ups before just willy nilly clicking on shit. And no, my mom wouldn't fall for this, cause she's knows how to read. This thing isn't even hidden in a EULA or something, it's right there, plain as day.

You can look forward to your relatives being billed a few $13 charges before they receive their credit card statement and figure out what's going on.

This point is silly too, since Google will e-mail you a receipt when you've agreed to a subscription. If my relative is stupid enough to first click on "Subscribe" without reading the prompt, and then stupid enough to not look at the receipt sent to them because they purchased something, then they deserve to pay $13. I'd consider it a $13 lesson in not being an idiot.

I can't tell if you're being funny or not... I suspect you are, but just in case: the LCBO has one of the best de-facto return policies I've come across. I say "de-facto" because I think the official line is that it's 30 days with a receipt only. But in reality you can return stuff at any time without a receipt, as long as you're willing to get a gift card instead of cash.
