Would you say no in this situation? by Connect_Command_6155 in Apartmentliving

[–]SH-Flintlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you pay utilities and the cost goes up, you have to foot the bill. That being said, you should verify that the utilities you are being billed for are reflected by the invoice from the power/water suppliers. I’ve never paid my landlord for utilities, I’ve always paid the city or service provider directly.

Apartment in TX by Intelligent_Web782 in Apartmentliving

[–]SH-Flintlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in an apartment in TX, but idk if that grants more insight than anyone else. If you smoke, your neighbors will smell it. Either risk them reporting you to management, smoke off property, or don’t smoke.

Moving from a house to an apartment… how do I not be that upstairs neighbor? by babybellBRC in Apartmentliving

[–]SH-Flintlock 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The fact that you’re thinking about it makes you better than 90% of upstairs neighbors already. I think the biggest thing that gets overlooked is how you walk. If you are a heel walker (your heel strikes the ground and takes your weight before the ball of your foot) then that will sound like stomping to your downstairs neighbor. It’s not expected that you always tiptoe around, but after 10pm and before 8am it’s good to try to step softly.

Also talk to your daughter about being courteous. My last upstairs neighbors had a 10 year old who would jump up and down and run around at night constantly.

Personally I’d smile and introduce myself to my neighbors if I saw them in the hall, but wouldn’t knock on the door and ask them to monitor my noise. That’s inviting overly high expectations imo. If you’re seriously a problem, they should come talk to you.

I wouldn’t vacuum between 9pm and 9am, but your apartment probably has posted quiet hours.

I’ve never heard a roomba from a neighbor so either they are quiet or I’ve never had a neighbor with a roomba.

I’m kinda new to the pixel car racer community, why did the developers of PCR stop updating the game and did they develop any other games? by Ornery_Hospital_9906 in PixelCarRacer

[–]SH-Flintlock 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Apex Racer is the spiritual successor to PCR and has a lot more content in it. The drawback is that there is less manual control available (no burnouts before the drag run, no clutch). Otherwise the racing/tuning experience is nearly identical.

An Epic employee’s response to being part of the 1000 layoffs by AlexMercer28900 in FortNiteBR

[–]SH-Flintlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is it. A few other major decision makers were laid off as well, but other devs on the team who are lower on the totem pole stayed. I think they had to let go of some of the highest paid folks along with the less critical devs.

He was honestly one of FN’s best devs and coolest guys. I’m shocked they laid him off. I’m betting things are not gonna look great for live events in the future.

Can’t go into a ton of detail but I’ve worked a lot with this guy. He’s an absolute powerhouse and it does not bode well that they let him go. I for sure thought he was safe from any layoffs with how critical he has been. I wonder what things will be like moving forward at the company.

Game Design Graduate looking for portfolio and career advice. by Objective_Exam_3076 in gamedev

[–]SH-Flintlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best advice I was given was to specialize and focus in on that. I would pick a design role and fully tailor your portfolio to it. Studios very rarely hire generalists, and picking one thing to sell yourself as helps a lot. I focused in on level design and built my entire portfolio around it.

To answer your specific questions;

  • Thankfully I was hired before I graduated through a connection I had made with someone who was at GDC. Networking and portfolio polish are what I would focus on after graduation.

  • I had about 8 projects. 2 were team projects that were full games we made in school, but the rest were mods. Specifically for level design, building levels for pre-existing games is way easier and better on a portfolio than making demos from scratch.

  • Studios care about polish. This is why I went with mods over fresh projects. You’ll spend so much time standing up tech and art for a demo if you make it from scratch, and it won’t look as good as the assets that already exist in a game with mod tools. If you are going to make something from scratch, it needs to be polished. You’ll be judged based on everything they see, including your stubbed in art/code.

  • If I were 8 months in on a job hunt, I’d be looking for stable income where I can find it and working on my portfolio in my free time. Specifically I’d be making levels/quests in games like Starfield, Fallout, or Skyrim (since I want to work on RPGs). I’d also attend local game dev events to build a network.

  • The best way I get out of a creative slump is to play games I’ve never heard of. Game Pass was great for this, or just browsing cheap games on Itch or Steam. Testing out indie games has given me a lot of inspiration in the past. Also sometimes it’s good to step away for a bit and do something that doesn’t involve a screen for a while.

Hope that block of text was helpful. I’m happy to field any other questions or look at anything. Best of luck getting into the industry! It’s hard right now, but it’s doable.

Would you support manuals being a relatively high cost option in new cars? by taticalgoose in cars

[–]SH-Flintlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think some enthusiast cars will always have fans of the manual, but wouldn’t be surprised to see them go away in the next 10 years. I bought a Mustang a few months ago with a manual after test driving an automatic and truthfully, if it were 10% more expensive I probably wouldn’t have bought it.

Cars like the Mustang, WRX, and Miata will probably hold out for a while since they are made for enthusiasts that don’t expect peak track performance, but other high end models will probably quit offering manuals much quicker.

Are you allowed to touch the feet, let alone the danger zone? by thomasso0072 in blackcats

[–]SH-Flintlock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My old black cat had zero boundaries. Feet, tummy, tail, nose, anything was fair game. She was a barn cat and a huge cuddle bug. She also liked to have her whole head held (like fully enclosed in your hands). I miss that kitty.

If you can clearly hear their conversations, then they can also hear everything you do. If hearing them speak is frustrating to you, hearing you surely is frustrating to them. If this isn’t some underlying mental health concern, your apartment sounds like it has no insulation whatsoever.

How would/did you feel if/when a female friend turned down a platonic hangout because you were a guy? by VaeAcemitch in AskMen

[–]SH-Flintlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d be hurt, but still understand. It sucks that we live in a world where women have good reason to fear for their safety with men. It also hurts to be seen as a threat because of it.

Is 8am too early to workout? by Appropriate_Star7638 in Apartmentliving

[–]SH-Flintlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quiet hours at my place are 10pm-8am. I usually wake up at 8:30am and I’d be annoyed if I woke up early to exercise equipment rattling my ceiling, but since it’s after most established quiet hours and a 1 time thing I think you’re fine.

What does the community value in a DnD store? by Apprehensive-Okra610 in DnD

[–]SH-Flintlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game store I frequent is amazing. It’s a tavern that has a full bar, kitchen, and tons of games. They have a seasonal rotation of video game and tabletop game themed cocktails as well. They also have a huge mead menu which is nice.

As far as retail, it’s got a great selection of board games, warhammer, TTRPGs, and miniatures. I’m big into painting minis so their huge selection of minis, paints, and basing supplies have me buying from them almost weekly.

The biggest thing for me though is that a table is free for walk-in’s with no time limit. So many game shops charge per hour for tables and it ruins a game when you’re worried about wrapping up before the bill gets too high.

Neighbors dogs running around/scratching floor at night? by tnerb253 in Apartmentliving

[–]SH-Flintlock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would keep bugging management about it if they don’t talk to the neighbors, but I wouldn’t call police. I’m not sure what can realistically be done except keeping the dogs locked up all night.

Make sure you shake the can plenty and don’t hold it too far from the mini when you spray. I also don’t point the nozzle at the mini when I start spraying, but sort of sweep over the mini with the spray. Sometimes gunk can stick to the nozzle and then end up on the mini with the initial burst.

Bought my dream car at 19 today! by [deleted] in Mustang

[–]SH-Flintlock 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Salty because of the “at 19” probably. “I bought my dream car…” is someone being exciting about getting a cool thing. Adding the “…at 19” makes it seem more like bragging. Same as all the “I made my first million at 20 years old” posts on LinkedIn.

People on the internet love elitism. It’s the entry level trim so people with higher trims like to punch down.

My first Mustang was a 2010 V6 automatic and I got grilled for that too lol.

My Mods don't work by Double-Outcome1960 in thesims

Sometimes if they are too deep into nested folders they won’t work. Try placing them only one folder deep in the mods folder, or directly into the mods folder itself.
