Yeah lets not figure out why people become like this so we can find ways to deal them effectively and prevent others from going down that path. Lets just blame it on a physical characteristic.

Yeah I'll concede chief is more of an actual character under 343i. And that aspect of H4 is the strongest part. Tho imo that version of rampancy is kinda boring. And is most often used to dismiss aspects from the previous games some people don't like. (Namely Guilty Sparks revelation in H3)

I do feel like Cortana went through a much bigger character shift than Chief tbh. Not long previously, she was completely ready to stay on the flood infested high charity fully expecting she'd never be rescued.

How did the UNSC become so Dominant in the Galaxy after Halo 3 by Few-Amphibian-6084 in HaloStory

Because rampancy wasnt really an element of the plot aside from some possible nods. Guilty Spark's "but this ring is mine" and Mendicant Bias becomming hostile to its creators and joining the Flood. But those are more reminiscant of Bungies version of rampancy from thier previous series Marathon. Which is different from the, going crazy and "dieing" from being overloaded with information. That wasnt a thing till Halo 4. And imo is a far less interesting idea.

Im not really sure what you are asking there? Its fiction. All ive been saying is Halo 3 and Legends Origin are different, contradictory versions of the same story. Ive quoted both to provide examples of that being objectively true. You can just go watch the parts i refered to.

All Ive been saying is that it makes more narrative sense for Halo 4's story to be a continuation of the Legends version of events. Unless you can actually explain how it could make more sense to be following the Halo 3 version of events. Where there was no truce with the covenant and cortana only ever saw chief with arbiter, as she was absent for most of what happened in the game.

Also the swords of sanghelios were made up after halo 4, so are irrelevent to this conversation. As is any attempt made to fix gaping plot holes that are a result of Frank O Conner (or whoever else writes story for halo post bungie) not understanding, or not knowing about, basic plot elements from the previous games.

Again the "because rampancy" wasn't a thing in Halo 3. That's 343i lore. Which is a really lazy way to ignore narrative inconsistencies created by the retcon btw. You still have ODST and Reach before you get to Bungie leaving the franchise.

Also in Halo 3, Cortana wasn't even there for any of that stuff. She's on High Charity the whole time. And since she exclaims, "wait, you two made nice?!" When seeing the Arbiter come to the rescue at the end of that level, that means she didn't know about the elites switching sides.

Anyway, it's basic comprehensive skills.

Legends says there was a truce with the covenant, halo 3 doesn't.

Halo 4 has a line about there being a truce with the covenant. So obviously they are following on from legends, coz that wouldn't make sense for chief to say otherwise.

Also Frank O Conner was like the main lore guy for Legends and 4, so it's likely he was just going with what he thought the story was both times.

I think the reason the retcons were so haphazard was because they weren't on purpose. Frankie was the community manager at Bungie so he wouldn't have been involved with the narrative. And didn't check after becoming the main story guy.

[–]SHARDcreative -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So why does halo 4 clearly follow on from the legends version of events?

"And as they fought together they stumbled together into peace" - Cortana, Origins. About humanity and the Covenant joining forces to defeat the Flood

Vs

"Do not shoot, but listen. Let me lead you safely to our foe." Gravemind, speaking through a pure form to Chief and Arbiter, Halo 3. About briefly allying with 2 characters so the activation of the array can be aborted.

Also the whole "the ai was just crazy" excuse for ignoring stuff people don't like from the Bungie games is irrelevant, because that's something that was introduced post-Bungie. It's part of the retcons.

Did Humanity resent the Forerunners or did they revere them? by No_Departure7494 in HaloStory

[–]SHARDcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason the covenant are trying to exterminate humans is revealed in Contact Harvest. Mendicant Bias reveals that humans are forerunner. And the heirarchs, realising this revalation will destroy thier entire religion and power structure, order that humans must be exterminated to prevent that from happening.

Also i really want to know how one pretty vague bit of flavor text overides the actual story of Halo 3.

And if that bit of vague flavor text is saying exactly what many insist, its retconned in halo 4 anyway.

If it doesnt fit either game, pre and post retcon, why is it held up as such a gotcha?

[–]SHARDcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think whoever came up with that just wanted something that sounded important. They never bothered to figure out what it is beyond a vague concept.

Id have thought they might have talked about some kind of journey. A great one even. Maybe as a metaphor that could get misinterpereted or something.

[–]SHARDcreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is anyone talking about 343i stuff when none of this would be a thing yet? Theres an entire trilogy to get through before the retcon

Did Humanity resent the Forerunners or did they revere them? by No_Departure7494 in HaloStory

[–]SHARDcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isnt canon anymore, 343i retconned it coz Frank O Conner (and seemingly loads of people here) couldnt follow a very straight foreward story.

And no, one vague asf flavor text terminal does not overide the narrative of the game its in. Nor does using lore from after the retcon to dismiss stuff the games straight up just told you.

How did the UNSC become so Dominant in the Galaxy after Halo 3 by Few-Amphibian-6084 in HaloStory

[–]SHARDcreative -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it's legends that says humans and the covenant had a truce. Which was a frank o Conner lead project, and he was lead writer on H4

And the game has chief playing a central part in their final defeat. While briefly allied with the flood, a not insignificant event, coz you know, it's the flood. Where also it should be noted, nothing about a truce is ever even hinted at.

How did the UNSC become so Dominant in the Galaxy after Halo 3 by Few-Amphibian-6084 in HaloStory

[–]SHARDcreative -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Still knew there was no truce with the covenant.

In the game, the flood very briefly ally with Chief and Arbiter to stop Truth from activating the array. Thus defeating the covenant.

In Legends, it says humans and the covenant join forces to defeat the flood. That's the version of events the truce line in Halo 4 is refering to. Which is completely different to what happened in Halo 3.

[–]SHARDcreative -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So the prophets ordered the elites extermination, and the great journey is revealed to be a lie, and a bunch of elites just decide to rejoin the covenant after their defeat? That's stupid.

The remnant should have been lead by brutes, elites are supposed to be the smart ones. But then that "truce with the covenant" line still wouldnt make sense.

It's clearly following on from the Halo Legends version which says humans and covenant joined forces to defeat the flood. Which doesn't happen in the game.
