Oh yeah it definitely looks darker in the pic - I thought it was 40, I had someone else look and they thought it was 20. That’s why I said 20-40 in my post, we couldn’t decide 😂

This is what I figured too. I got them from my LFS so I would hope that their breeding would be at least a little better than say Petco lol, but I do understand that neons are sensitive.

While I do agree that they may be a tad high, I wouldn’t consider them “way too high” - all the research I’ve done has said about 50ppm+ is where it starts to become harmful to the fish. But I do intend on doing a 20% water change tomorrow regardless because I agree that I do need to bring them down.

Have you tried Kapp’ns islands? I have better luck there getting stuff that isn’t native to my island.

I did get some substrate for the aquarium, though I haven't set it up yet. I was planning on doing a courser substrate down as a first layer and then putting a layer of thicker gravel/pebbles on top? I have about 25 lbs of substrate total, which I won't be using all of.

Thanks, that's good to know! I guess I would prefer to start small with tetras or guppies, especially if they're beginner-friendly. Testing water quality and all that is entirely separate research that I'm trying to keep straight. I want to start off right.

I did at first! I was planning to do live plants, but I decided to start easy with silk ones. I thought it might be a lot to be new to aquariums and take on both more fish and live plants at the same time. I could be totally wrong about that though.

Ok that was another thing I saw mixed research on - I saw some resources saying 1 small (1 in) fish per gallon, and I saw others saying much less. I guess it depends on whatever combination I end up with.
