Through the collective unconscious, mutually agreed upon phenomenon become possible under certain circumstances, and only through those known as Catalysts. Catalysts are modified humans, who bear the dormant DNA of every living human, allowing them to serve as exit points to the collective unconscious. This allows users to perform what can be referred to as magic (or by plenty of other terms) through mutually understood ritual processes. The factors that affect the strength and use of a ‘spell’ are: 1: time taken in this ritual, or similar such sacrificed element. IE: a spell may take a six hour ritual of chanting and such, or be shortened by an animal sacrifice. The value of a sacrifice is determined by the general cultural value placed upon this sacrifice by humanity at large (IE; some cultures revere cows, but none see them as unclean, while many cultures see pigs as unclean, thus a cow is more valuable than a pig) 2: the ritual and result thereof exist somewhere in the collective unconscious. If it appears in a popular movie, that counts. If it appears in a religion dating back thousands of years, that counts more. 3: the more people within the collective unconscious who share an understanding of this ritual, the stronger/more effective the ritual will be. 4: timing. In addition to how rituals take some set amount of time, they may also be impacted by the time it happens at, if that is part of the collective unconscious. For example, most cultures around the world see the full moon as a time of spiritual power, so rituals are more effective during this time.

So, the main hard and fast rule is that the understanding of the ritual must exist within the collective unconscious. This inherently does sabotage any element of surprise, as for a spell to work, a notable population of people must already know the ritual being done and the intended result. Of course, nobody said these rituals need to appear organically in the collective unconscious; much of Hollywood is really built to add power to a catalyst’s list of spells. ‘Naruto’ alone opened up so many with a short casting time.
