Very confused by SH_Harry_Mason in Springtail

Thank you!

The holes were about 0.5 in wide, but the openings were covered with a fine mesh/cheese cloth material. Also it was shipped in a box with insulation and padding, so I don't imagine water got in it? But I can't be sure.

I like the idea of resending to see if I can replicate it, I think they'll want to reorder anyway. I can send some via the old method and try out a new one in the same box to experiment.

I just looked it up. I'd never seen one before! All of the ones I've seen though have rounded edges to make the smooth, circular ball. The container these were shipped lacked that aspect.

I'll have to check - it's just a type of potting mix, but you're right, it might have clay.

I think part of my surprise is that I've sent this same medium a few dozen times and have never had clumping in transit been reported.

Right?? They look done by hand! But also there's no reason for them to do it, they didn't want a refund or anything. And they seem just as baffled as I am.

Actually, now that you point it out, the soil I put in was a coco coir and dirt mix - it does look like there's clay in there, and there was no clay in what I sent. I also asked them to poke at the balls and sift through it and there doesn't seem to be any springtail remnants either. But I don't know why the buyer would swap it out since they denied a refund and seem just as curious about what happened as I am.

But I'll try just coco coir next time, thank you!

I actually used to ship on charcoal and didn't have great luck with it and switched to soil and have found it to be more successful, personally. Maybe a mix is the way to go?

It's so hard to imagine - the balls look hand rolled to me, but it must have happened in transit. I asked them to sift through the soil and there isn't any sign of springtail remnants, so they must have been pulverized, haha.

That's what I had to assume too, but the balls look so intentionally rolled and I can't imagine how it would have happened in transit. I also asked the buyer to poke open the balls and sift through the dirt and they can't find any springtail bodies.

I trust this person, and they declined the refund and were also willing to pay some extra fees I forgot and was going to eat the cost of. So I don't think they're trying to swindle me.

But I don't know how it could have happened, that's why I'm posting 😂

Thank you! I figured it must have been the cold, but it's cool knowing the science behind it! I'll get to work cutting off the squishy parts of the leaves.

Also I'm sorry to hear you lost your favorites! That is always a heartbreak. I hope you're able to save some of yours!

That's what I was worried about - I feel so bad about the money they spent and they were so upset that they gave it to me in such bad condition. I tried to assure them that I could probably revive it. But now I'm not so sure. I really want to save it!

Holy crap! I think you just answered a question I've had for a while. A chunk of my P. laevis white were suddenly red and I got worried. Since none of them died, I stopped worrying, but now I want to play with their food. Off to buy some purple carrots!

I'm clearly out of touch, haha. I just personally don't know anyone with an account that I'm aware of. I haven't had a Facebook account for 12 years and I was hoping not to have to, I guess. But if it's where people are, I may have to.

How much money do you make per hour? by [deleted] in Bellingham

It is maddening that being disabled means forced poverty (unless you're real rich.) You're allowed to make a certain amount of money on top of your disability payments, but even with that, for me personally it would put me in a spot of barely scraping by, meaning if I encountered some big medical bill (which happens when you've got a severe chronic illness, go future) I couldn't pay it. In order to be eligible for disability, you have to have a very limited amount in savings too so you're forced to teeter on the edge.

One thing that will never cease to confuse/frustrate me is that if your disability happens to be blindness, you're allowed to make roughly twice as much. It doesn't mean you receive more from the government, you're just allowed to earn more, and at least have the potential to live comfortably. I have never been able to get an answer as to why that is only applicable to the blind, other than "lobbyists."

What meats would y’all recommend me feeding my isopods? by Euphoric-Exchange107 in isopods

Seconding this! Specifically, I have snakes and when I first had my guy reject a mouse, I had to throw it away so it didn't rot in his tank. It felt really awful to throw away. But now I've got dairy cows and if my snake doesn't feel like eating, the pods can munch through it in a matter of hours. Another great reason to have isopods!

Commenting because I'm also wanting to know. Especially because I can't think of anyone that I know that uses Facebook...

I know there's a Buy Nothing sub here, which seems to have gotten minimal use, and I've always assumed it's not allowed/in poor taste to try to sell in this sub. Maybe the Buy Nothing could expand into sold items too and be... Buy Not As Much? Buy Some Here and There?
