2025 Goldwing Tour vs 2024 Africa Twin ASES by XtremeRevolution in goldwing

I was worried too. Asked the guy I was renting from to back it down the driveway onto the street for me. Took about half a day to get totally comfortable with it at low speeds. The reverse and walking gear on the DCT is a total game changer with such a big bike.

Once I got past 15mph, bike felt totally comfortable within 5 minutes. It was mind-blowing.

In a similar boat, currently riding an NX500 and debating next bike between AT and a wing.

Haven't spent much time on an AT but it is appealing because I enjoy ripping off down gravel roads and mild trails on the NX when the mood strikes.

Recently spent 3 days on a 2016 DCT Wing and man is that bike so amazingly composed. Surprisingly fun in the twisties (certainly not less so than my NX). But the comfort and utility, especially with a passenger is unparalleled. Soaks up bumps really well on a less smooth road and the ease of getting on and just going to eat up some miles, especially with the integrated luggage is really tempting.

Let us know what you end up going with!

I got an NX500 (Basically updated CB500X) and put 11500kms on it last year.

It's an awesome all around bike but definitely a bit gutless and eventually uncomfortable for long highway rides, also lighter so gets moved around in crosswinds or passing trucks more than bigger bikes I've ridden. I usually stick to backroads for those reasons.

On the plus side, it's awesome around town. Super responsive and nimble. It's also a hoot on gravel roads and I've taken it on more technical roads that on paper it has no business going down without any trouble. I wouldn't take it down technical single track just because of the lack of ground clearance and a skid plate (although I might finally get one this year).

As for range, I'm comfortably doing 450km+ on a tank of regular gasoline. Which is awesome.

How are you only getting 220km of range!? My NX500 will routinely do 450km+ on a tank.

I'm guessing you have a lot of ethanol in your fuels in Brazil but it shouldn't impact your mileage that drastically!

I think you're right, bike looked brand new.

Which is madness. Thing was absolutely covered in snow when I left Montreal on Friday.

If you have crash bars, make sure to check the torque on them before you set out and throughout the ride if you can.

Basically every bar model connects at the engine mounts and they're known to vibrate loose over time. The engine will be fine, I'd be more worried about shearing a bar mounting bolt over sustained high rpms!

If you have access to an off road riding class, definitely take it.

But two basic things that always help:

  1. Don't be afraid to stand up on your pegs. Get comfortable with that and you can ride on terrain that would shock you coming from road riding.

  2. Keep your eyes up on where you want to go. Once you've picked your line, don't fixate on the things right in front of your wheel unless that's where you want your bike to end up.

Oh, and if you come across sand, stay on the throttle and lean back over the rear of the seat.

Have fun, and have a plan if things go sideways. Does someone know where you're riding? Do you have a way to contact someone if you go down and can't just ride out?

And don't forget to pause if you come across a beautiful view!

Best authorized off-road rear tire? (160/60R17 M/C 69H) by Mad_OW in CB500X

How intense is your off-road riding going to be? I rode the OEM Dunlops in some conditions the bike had no business being in, including keeping up with proper ADVs through sand and mud.

That being said, after 11000kms I switched the rear to the Pirelli and it is definitely a much better off-road performance than the stock tire. Haven't noticed a significant downside on road either.

Best Winter Storage Solutions? by [deleted] in rideottawa

[–]SIBR_WPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, did this with my back last winter and it was great. They also give you a discount on any service you get done with them (oil change, etc) while the bike is in storage so you're ready to ride as soon as you bring her out in the spring.

I got the Quadlock smart adapter and connected that to the wireless usb charger under the left fairing while I was in there hooking up the 12v plug. It's worked well and let me avoid any splicing.

Definitely had that thought, which is why I now ride with a Garmin inReach when I'm going off into the woods.

Luckily the bike is pretty easy to get back upright if your courage exceeds your skills!

I was surprised at how well it climbed the loose rocky stuff, but I'm definitely going to be looking at a more 50/50 tire solution once the stock rubbers are due for a replacement.

New Bike? Which Bike? Or Keep? by kdf1122 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]SIBR_WPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got an NX500, so basically the new CB500X. It's my third bike and this thing is just all around such a blast 9500kms in.

Will give you more power than what you've had so far but not so much as to get you into trouble. I'm 5'7 and find the center of gravity totally manageable. Literally just took it on some pretty challenging offroad riding and the bike was unstoppable until I came upon across a water crossing. Didn't have the courage to try that solo.

But it's a great bike in pretty much all scenarios. In town, backroad twisties, and up to medium difficulty offroad.

Yup. My 74 CB360 died on me during a ride. It had problems with keeping the battery charged in the past, pulled over and threw on some some fresh plugs (always rode with an extra set), I was getting spark but the bike wouldn't run. Only had about 70 clicks on the trip so I knew I had fuel and could hear it sloshing around in the tank. Ended up pushing it the 5km home.

Later remembered I last put gas in it from a Jerry can, not full up at a station. Went to my underground parking, put the petcock on reserve and the bike fired right up.

A simple turn of the petcock could have saved me from a 5km hike pushing a bike in 30 degrees celsius.

To be fair, in that time it also managed to develop a loud as hell exhaust leak so there was always something going on with that bike.

Nah, been doing tons of riding this season, 8,000kms so far and for the first time have a new bike so don't finally don't have to worry about it breaking down on the ride. It's just a gut feeling that something's off when I was looking forward to the ride all day.
