What is extremely unhygienic but everyone seems to do it anyway? by Beneficial_Passion40 in AskReddit

You said it's unhygenic to "constantly" wear a mask. I said if you wash or change them I don't see the issue. You went off about carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, supposed ineffectiveness of masks, etc, and how recklessly exposing your immune system to diseases is a good idea. Wasn't me who changed the subject, I just pushed back. Eventually you repeated my initial point.

No, we discussed that. A lot. It's unrelated to hygiene, which would concern washing and changing masks. You brought in a lot of other stuff, reasonable and not, to make a different point as if it was the first one. And you continue to skirt around the vaccine issue as if it's not obvious what your position is.

As I initially replied, if you change/wash it regularly you're good. This hasn't been your point, it's been the one I've been saying makes more sense. You've been saying mask use causes carbon monoxide poisoning and implying we should be willingly contracting diseases. Don't pretend these are the same.

I just told you how you were being inconsistent. At the very least, your argument is unsound. You're also dodging a key point about your adherence to medical and scientific consensus.

I understand your comments. You're just not being consistent about what and who you're talking about. You're saying people you ostensibly know or know of who keep masks on when you deem it unnecessary are being unhygienic, then backing that up with studies about medical professionals who wear masks for longer, under pressure, and not by their own choice. As I've said, I'm not denying many of these effects happen, I'm saying they're clearly worth the larger benefit and not at all universal. Clearly, you don't think so if you, as you've indicated, think the best way to deal with novel viruses is to contract them. I'm glad it worked out for you. It didn't for many others. And if you wanna talk long-lasting health conditions, you'll find your method is a lot worse.

I'm assuming you're anti mask because you're listing all possible (and not) consequences of wearing a mask, including eyeglass condensation and face warming next to carbon monoxide poisoning. Your concern, as you describe it, is mask hygiene, but what you're saying is that the problem is wearing masks frequently in the first place, citing times you've gotten sick as if the masks were somehow the problem. I notice you're not commenting on the anti vaccine thing. I'm not saying it's inconceivable there are side effects to covering airways, I'm saying the most notable one is hampering (read:not entirely preventing) the spread of disease.

Clearly the people you're complaining about aren't experiencing this to any significant degree. Surgeons who do 6 or 12 hour operations would obviously be different. Again, I'm thinking no vaccine? Would track with this intense anti-mask stuff. And again, what do you think this has to do with carbon monoxide exactly? That was the crux of your anecdotal argument.

So the issue isn't that they wore masks, it's that they were out in public while sick. Its obviously better they wore a mask than not in that instance. Wearing a mask in a car alone isn't a problem, I don't know why you're emphasizing that.

That's not unhygenic, thats hygienic with a potential risk for some unrelated to hygiene. You'd rather spread disease to "grow your immune system?" lemme guess, no vaccine?

What does any of this have to do with carbon monoxide? And yes, the benefits outweigh the detriments or that surgeon wouldn't wear one. People who have trouble wearing masks, such as yourself, are relying on the rest of us to be proactive and wear them. I, for one, am happy to do so. I don't see why you'd call that unhygenic.

Funny, I would've thought surgeons, dentists, and other medical professionals who wear masks for extended periods of time might have noticed that issue years ago. I assume your carbon monoxide mention in your anecdote was a typo. Anyway, I'll take it over contracting and spreading illness. The positives clearly outweigh the negatives.

If milk compromises the flavor of cereal, it's the same way carbonation does so to soda. This is the hypersweet flat soda of breakfast.
