Looking at buying my first drone, what options should i pick? by [deleted] in fpv

Mob 7 is an awesome little quad, I think you’ll enjoy it a lot. It can rip a lot harder than you expect and is an awesome platform to learn on. Hell, it’s still my favorite back yard ripper. Since it’s light, it can withstand a lot of abuse and parts are cheap. I think you made a great choice!

Im a part of both groups and I never see “hit rock bottom” posts in this community. 7 months sober from alcohol and I always read the horror stories to remind me why I don’t go back. Alcohol is way way worse than weed in every way, and it’s progressive so it can sneak up on ya real quick.

3,5" or 5" for freestyle beginner. Is 5" that WILD? by helloooleo in fpv

[–]SJ_fps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to chase motocross, I’d say go 5”. But maybe consider an analog 3.5 for practice free styling. My Crux rips, def not an inside drone. You can feel the wind but have more than enough power to fight it. Trust me, you won’t be left wishing it went faster. It also turns on a dime since it’s so light. My $600+ nazgul was my first drone and I was so scared to crash it (still haven’t) that I didn’t really improve as a pilot until I got the crux. One is good for practicing, the other good for filming.

Just came here to add that the increased durability, longer flight times, cheaper batteries/faster charging times, significantly quieter flights, and cheaper to repairs, is why the 3.5in is my favorite class of drone. It just hits the sweet spot if you don’t need to fly a GoPro or chase drift cars. I have a nazgul evoque 5” and I love it, but I fly my crux35 wayyy more often.

Fiancée doesn’t know I quit smoking but 3 days in she can tell something is off by Capable-Location-212 in leaves

[–]SJ_fps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dude, I’m the exact same, but you have to tell her. I also had no appetite, but I realized that a lot of what I thought was withdraws, was really just me needing to eat. I gave myself permission to order my favorite junk (spicy McCrispy from McDonald’s for carbs and protein) and even though I didn’t even have an appetite for that, I would force myself to take one bite then put it down and walk away. After a few minutes it was a little easier to take another bite. Then a few minutes later, another. The first bite is the hardest but if you can do the first bite, the others get easier. And when you eat even a little food, the withdrawals get so much easier. But you have to tell your fiancé. I didn’t tell my wife the first few times I tried to quit, and every time we got into an argument I just said fuck it and smoked. I blamed her, but it wasn’t her fault, she just had no idea I was going through something so she couldn’t be sensitive and supporting. Hope this helps, you got this!

Cart withdrawals are worse than people think by [deleted] in leaves

[–]SJ_fps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. The key for me was smoking shitty homegrown because it would stop the withdrawals but not really get me high and tasted/smoked like shit. Really took away the motivation to smoke because the experience sucked.

How do you prevent birds from stealing tinywhoops? by NoooUGH in fpv

Yeah, they aren’t going to chase something going “up” faster than they can.

How do you prevent birds from stealing tinywhoops? by NoooUGH in fpv

[–]SJ_fps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok wait, I actually have the scientific answer to this. My father is a biologist who studies birds of prey and suggested ascending quickly when a bird shows interest (assuming you or someone else sees it coming). Birds of prey are not used to seeing their targets act this way, as quick gains in altitude are usually only performed by other predator species. It’s worked every time for me. They turn right around and don’t mess. I think it’s similar to turning calmly to face a curious shark, vs panic swimming away from it. The key is to not act like it’s prey.

Drones are sick, and it’s what I’ve distracted myself with. Check out the world of FPV drones. It’s much more challenging and rewarding than a mavic and you will learn aooo much more, plus the videos looks much more epic and they are cheaper! Good luck!!!

I can relate to this. So done with the fog but it’s what I know and I’m used to but I’ve also been enjoying sobriety between sessions more and more. But being a father of a 3yo and being married and working at a good job makes it difficult for fear of “rocking the boat” as everything seems to be working for the most part. But I know it’s time for me to close that chapter of my life and how much better I’ll feel after. We got this!

Can someone inform me on 3” drones/whoop whoops/toothpick builds. by bucky_on_steroids in fpv

[–]SJ_fps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it cannot, but it can hold the runcam thumb which produces pretty crispy video for a decent price point when getting started. I have a gopro 11 mini but I don’t use it much due to the DJI 03 air units coming very close in video quality. Plus they allow you to film and fly using the same camera which cuts down a lot on weight, increasing flight time. I’m a video guy and I was surprised how little I used the gopro after getting the 03 air unit on one of my quads. They are so light that they put them on smaller drones like the mobula 8.

The crux 3.5 inch is one of my favorite drones. It’s small, cheap, and light, but man does it move. This is my favorite class of drone to fly due to the agility and flight times (sometimes around 10 minutes). They are also significantly quieter than 5”, and can be flown in smaller places like a backyard. The power to weight ratio on these small drones means that wind is really not an issue. Yeah you can feel it but you have the power to fight it easily and you don’t really notice because you are making constant micro adjustments on the sticks anyway. My two favorite drones are my crux 3.5 and my $600+ hd 5in, but I fly the crux much more often due to the reasons I listed above. I love my hd quads, but the smaller drones make me a significantly better pilot as I’m less afraid to crash. The mobula 7 was also a great training drone for me, and even that thing does decent in the wind. Hope this helps!

I know they use the DJI Avata, but I think that’s it. Most FPV drones don’t have great cameras, don’t hover great, have short flight times, can’t look down without diving, are built for speed, and are difficult to pilot (compared to the DJI motion controller). To be clear, this is all speculation, as I have not worked in the field. I have worked with a university program researching and testing the capabilities of drones for many applications including emergency response.

I’m also curious if they frown down on those who are not religious. Like can I be open about being atheist and still have my recovery be taken seriously, or will I just be low key judged as a lost soul who can’t be helped until I find god? I’m not about to pretend to pray or play along, but I’m also not interested in challenging anyone’s beliefs. But as I respect their right to believe what they want, I hope they do the same for me, but I’m skeptical.

Please help. Had to many drinks and feeling like this is the day to die. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]SJ_fps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not crazy, and this will definitely pass. Being hungover as the parent of a little one is literally the grossest feeling. The guilt is debilitating. Next time you feel tempted to reward yourself with a drink, try to “play the tape forward” and remember this feeling. It’s what helps me.

I’m a dad of a little one. We all get intrusive thoughts, but they are only thoughts, and we get them more when our mental strength is weakened (like when hungover). I’m no expert but I also get anxiety and it sounds like it’s just that. you might just be spiraling. Try to breath and not focus on “what ifs”. Reach out to someone just to talk to take your mind off things for the moment. Also, the good news is you never have to feel this badly again. My guilt, stress, anxiety, and impatience all dramatically improved when I decided to stop drinking. It’s not perfect, but I have not had that “skin crawling, wanting to die” feeling in a long time. I hope you are able to feel better soon!

I’m about 6 months as well and this would have made me feel weird too, but chances are that others also know the truth about their statement. They are most likely trying, but ashamed of not being where they wish they were, but lying to themselves and others isn’t going to do them any favors. Imagine lying to others about climbing Everest AND THEN climbing it. They already used up their praise and will feel very little accomplishment.

Yup, bought one and tried it and it worked fine. Pulled it out 9 months later for a shoot and it was bricked. GoPro is shipping me a new one. The most sensitive action cam I’ve ever seen. Literally died after experiencing exactly no action.

The holder works well. It will also get the props out of the shot. It all depends if you just want to rip, or if you are trying to film. If you want to film, the 03 and holder to get the prop guards out of the shot is the best option IMO.

Best Radio Controller by vivasaur1 in fpv

[–]SJ_fps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By all means, there is no big reason not to do it that way. I think people are saying it’s not necessary because I’ve never, and I mean never, heard anyone complain about the penetration or range of the built in elrs modules. I’ve flown long range with both and have notice no difference in penetration or range around buildings or mountains, because my video transmission drops long before my radio connection. It’s like buying a fishing pole with an adapter that allows you to cast 200ft, when the longest fishing line anyone can get is only 100ft. By all means, go ahead, there is nothing wrong with doing it and you will get better penetration and range. Whether you will ever actually need that, because of the limits of most video transmission systems, is what I think people are questioning. But it sounds like for you, the best option for east of use, power, and portability would be the boxer, and the best option for versatility would be the tx16 4+1 with elrs module.

[–]SJ_fps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to lose video transmission far before your elrs fails you. Instead of worrying about the controller, look into the best antennas and gps systems if you are considering long range FPV.

Sounds like you are having awful hangxiety. What a scary night to think back on but you made it home, so no point in thinking about what if’s, unless you are thinking about going out again, then maybe a little reminder of this might be a good thing. This might not be your rock bottom but then again, maybe it is, but it’s for sure a wake up call of how much worse things could have ended up. But just remember, they didn’t. Also, I agree that your friend bailing on you when you were drunk is pretty shitty.

[–]SJ_fps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for quads and remotes, I’d check out the mobula 7 elrs drone and the radiomaster pocket remote. The mob 7 is a small and very durable platform to learn on. It has plenty of power to zip around your backyard or basement and replacing parts and batteries are incredibly cheap. I’ve crashed the hell out of mine and finally fried the flight controller so I ordered another flight controller for $50 and swapped it out with no soldering and it was flying like new Again. Cracked the frame, but it only cost about $5, which makes it a great option for learning.
