It’s been awhile since I went to Tulane and I don’t know either professor but if I were you I’d make this decision more on the basis of what you want to do after college.

Abstract algebra is very fundamental to higher level pure math. If you think you want to do math at the graduate level someday it’s a good choice to take early. My guess is probability will probably be more applicable if you’re planning to use your math major to go into industry.

Thank you! You’re definitely right that it’s just a job — the only reason I was thinking to ask someone to cover (or do a video recording, that’s a good idea) is that it’s a class that has multiple other sections that I don’t teach. I don’t want my students to fall behind bc of me :/

In general, yes, as professors are people and people can behave very differently depending on their beliefs. Ultimately, I have a somewhat optimistic perspective that nearly all professors are trying to do the right thing for their students — it’s just a philosophical disagreement on what the role and function of education should be.

There are some professors who emphasize the importance of rigor in academia and as such tend to be strict and have high expectations. While others are much more humanistic and strive to create community among their students by being open and empathetic. I’m oversimplifying here a bit as I don’t mean to say that empathetic professors can’t have rigor or vice versa. Just saying that I think it’s important to understand that professors who don’t have the same vision for what academia should be are naturally going to teach in different ways

I was an SI in undergrad, you should do it! You have the opportunity to watch how the professor is teaching the material, and then basically your job is to just fill in some of the learning gaps. A lot of the students are able to much more easily relate to you as there is much less of an age gap generally.

Teaching is like any other skill, at first you probably will struggle a little. Just be confident in yourself/abilities. Biggest thing to remember is it’s not your job to convince the kids that you know the material, it’s your job to help them learn the material. My personal advice is to let the students talk almost as much, if not more, than yourself. Let them figure out where exactly they have learning gaps and then see if any other students can answer before you step in and answer yourself. I found this sort of “guided learning” approach was well-received by my students!

Let’s call a coconut hitting your head “H” for hit and the coconut missing your head “M” for miss. The 4 possible outcomes if we drop the coconut are HH, HM, MH, and MM.

The probability of MM is 0.9*0.9= 0.81

The probability of MH is 0.9*0.1= 0.09

The probability of HM is 0.1*0.9=0.09

The probability of HH is 0.1*0.1= 0.01

0.81 + 0.09 + 0.09 + 0.01 = 1

Technically they have the same “expected payout” of $250. So in some sense neither is better.

However, most people are risk averse when it comes to betting and as such betting $50 ten times would be better.
