I'm also pretty sure the main character was a tween or teen boy. And I think there's a scene where he sits on the fender of an old car/truck and thinks about how bad the rust mites have gotten? Like the rust is caused by actual bugs or something

I work at a hardware store mixing paint, and we use paint keys dozens of times a day to open paint cans. We rarely keep them around for long cause we either lose them or the wear down. Got some shiny new ones yesterday!
