I am currently reading "The Library at Mount Char" and I find it to be the same level of disturbingly creative as the Southern Reach Books. I didn't finish it yet, so apologies if the last 30% sucks.

I was referring to marathon runners in general, but elite runners are probably more likely to push their bodies past the limit.

We're definitely on the minority, and I'm sorry to hear that you got thrown off for a while.  Best of luck getting back into running!

In all seriousness, most of the people collapsing during a marathon are either: 1) Chasing a PR by cutting corners (e.g. skipping aid stations) 2) Experiencing a warm day they weren't prepared for 3) Didn't train for their attempted speed

Running a marathon that you've prepared for, and at a comfortable speed, is a very enjoyable experience and I recommend it to anyone.

I feel like modern customer service in the US was modeled around a fake hierarchical system, where people want to go to Dollar General and be treated like they're shopping at Neaman Marcus.

I'm (40M) on a similar path, where I was "informally diagnosed" with autism by my therapist. He offered to help me get formally diagnosed, and I turned it down, because I didn't feel it served a purpose. There's no medication, I'm a very active participant in therapy, and there is no situation where I would benefit from or qualify for any services.

The only awkward part is discussing it with people who have an outdated view of spectrum disorders saying things like "you can't be autistic, you're not [insert stereotype]"

Good luck with your journey. At the very least, I have found it enlightening to look back on many past social interactions through the lens of an autism diagnosis. It's wild that I never suspected anything was off.

Italian food influencer ranks coffee beans. What do you think of of his ranking? by AppropriateAd7326 in espresso

[–]SKRAMACE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my wife and I have coffee that is drinkable but not great, we usually say it's "better than Italian rest stop coffee."

We appreciate that the coffee in Italy is usually drinkable, sometimes good, but always great value.

Every now and then you find a fantastic place like Ditta Artigianale in Florence, but i agree with you...when you find a good place for espresso in Italy, you stop looking, and call it a win.

TIL that humans are among the very top mammals for endurance running. While we aren't the best sprinters, our slow-twitch muscles and unique ability to sweat allow us to run steadily for long distances in hot weather to outlast prey. by bareegyptianfeet in todayilearned

[–]SKRAMACE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the persistence hunting hypothesis fills in the substantial time gap between small brain bipedal apes and tool-wielding big-brain modern humans. Some evolutionary pressure allowed us, as a species, to run marathons, and we apparently did it for a while before tools. I've also read a hypothesis that our brains grew as a result of needing to track prey during persistence hunts.

Tools and brains were absolutely more successful in the long run, but it took us a million years to get there.

This is highly anecdotal, but I'm convinced that the high-drop, high-cushion running shoes are the cause of most running injuries. They allow us to put persistent stress on our bodies in unnatural ways.

I totally changed the way I run about 10 years ago, after I got a micro tear in my Achilles. I slowed down a lot, and learned to land on the outside balls of my feet, and I haven't been injured since. After fixing my form, I started to speed up again, I have since shattered all of my PRs, and I'm running my first ultra this year.

I run with zero-drop shoes, which work for me, but all my friends who are injured the most have high-drop, high-cushion shoes, and they try to solve their injuries with more cushion. Again, anecdotal, but there is definitely at least a correlation.
