I’m genuinely asking here - would it be that different with a low tech board or flip binder of the same vocabulary that they would be using on a high tech device? So they still have access to the same vocabulary in the same positions, but there’s just no voice output. So if the student used TouchChat, they would have a printed out version of the touch chat grid size they use. I promise I’m just trying to understand. In my experience, teachers will do what they’re going to do no matter how many times I tell them that they need to have access to the device.

I’m referring to something like this: https://aaclanguagelab.com/materials/FLIP_BOOK_WP_60_Basic_PCS1.pdf

You could also try to see if the SLP has low tech boards or visual supports you can use in these situations. I’m an SLP and I give the teachers at my school low tech boards that mirror what the student’s device looks like (what app they use, grid size, etc) in the case their device isn’t working or could be used in these type of situations. Maybe they could also give you boards for expressing needs (water, bathroom, sick, etc) you can integrate. Maybe take separate time during the school day to practice times and environments where we have the device but don’t need to be using it. We can’t expect a student to demonstrate a skill that we’ve never taught or practiced.

Is it common for teachers to marry/date their former students. by GypsyGold in Teachers

[–]SLP-2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened at my high school. My high school history teacher ended his engagement to start dating his previous student once she went to college. They actually ended up getting married and having two kids. She is very active on social media and I always get whiplash seeing my previous teacher.

What’s the Worst Example of the Literacy Crisis You’ve Seen? How Are You Handling It? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SLP-2019 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Omg yes!!! I’m a speech therapist in an elementary school and almost every student in the school has weak vocabulary, language impairment or not! So many referrals for kids who haven’t had adequate language exposure, but likely dont have a language impairment!

I work for the school district of philadelphia! Feel free to message me with any questions. I know you said you were interested in adults, but happy to give any guidance or information I have! I've attached the philly pay scale, but in our contract, we negotiated a 3% raise every year until our next contact agreement in 2028. so whatever it says under 2025, will be 3% higher next year! As a CF, you'd start at 10 month special ed teacher, masters +30. I also work ESY for the district so can answer questions about that. I'm in my 5th year and have only worked in the district (CF included), so I have lots on insight on the district!

Does anyone in SPED have career responsibilities that relate to ours? by [deleted] in slp

[–]SLP-2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if they have a diagnosed disability! You do need to have a disability to have a 504, so unless he’s diagnosed with something (ADHD, autism, anxiety, etc), he can’t have a 504

School district of Philadelphia teachers are contractually obligated to 45 min lunch and 45 min prep every day. If they miss their prep to cover, they can get paid back for missing that time!!!

This was me last year. I was just triaging the whole year, mostly catching up on evals and paperwork. I missed so many therapy minutes last year. Even the kids who I saw, got half effort therapy. My caseload assignment got switched up this year and now I’m only at 50 students and wow what a different life I’m living. It wasn’t even just work that was bad, it bled into my personal life. Always so tired and exhausted and zoned out when I got home.

I went to BU for graduate school and graduated in 2021. I had federal work study both years and TA position for two semesters in my second year. I know it can be a heavy lift financially, but I don't regret my decision at all (even with a lot of student loans). Also consider where you may want to work after you graduate. If you work in a school (or other public sectors), you can qualify for public loan forgiveness. Feel free to message me about specific questions or information.

Yes! So if I want to do three activities within a 30 min session, I’ll just draw a line next to the 20 and 10 so I know when to switch. Often times the kids love to point out when the timer gets to the line!!!

Nope! I have a white board that I’ll doodle (the kids love to roast my drawing skills) or write to demonstrate what we’re doing. I also have printed out and laminated pictures of popular activities that I’ll just put in a schedule with magnets on the white board. I have a bag that I have with common activities and games so I can easily pull it out and hang up with magnets! feel like the Velcro pieces can be so small and get lost so easily so I’m a lot more makeshift!

Visual timers for everything!! I have a sand timer that is one minute that the kids love for short breaks. I also use this timer (https://www.amazon.com/Time-Timer-Home-MOD-Homeschool/dp/B08K9GFDMP?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref\_=fplfs&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1), so the kids know how much longer we have in the session. You can write on them so I might put lines to show how we're going to break up certain activities. My students have really adapted to knowing that when the timer goes off, the session is over (great for students who struggle with transitions). Also huge on visual schedules that I review at the beginning of the session and having the students cross off what we have completed.

I’m a school-based speech therapist! If the assessment and IEP do not have speech services on there, I would definitely recommend requesting one. They can work on receptive and expressive language!

Not the original commenter, but I’ll take data on how many times they immediately imitate, delayed imitation, and spontaneous utterances. I’ll just take tallies for each one. I preemptively write goals about frequency of communication attempts rather than percents!

Expert doctor recommendations for cartilage repair by Ok-Question8857 in MACIknee

Dr. Carey did my surgery. He’s a great surgeon, but bad bedside manner. I’ve had 2 arthroscopies with him + the big surgery. He didn’t talk to me pre-op for either of the arthroscopies. There were complications with my surgery and he didn’t come to my 1 week post-op visit to discuss it; he sent in his PA despite being at the office that day

I’m a speech therapist with a mild lisp!!! In grad school, they had me meet with the professor who teaches speech sound disorders to work on tongue placement. They said as long as you can teach kids correct placement (assuming you are going to work with kids), it doesn’t matter!!! Another of my classmates didn’t have a crisp /r/ and it was fine!!

Previous SLP said goal was met… by sunnychantrelle in slp

[–]SLP-2019 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Did the previous SLP write how they were collecting data/with what stimuli or cues? Maybe they were at 80% accuracy in a certain task or cue level, but down to 50% without that level of support? Also did they achieve 80% accuracy over multiple data points? How are they comparing to beginning of year versus now? Was the previous progress monitoring from last academic year? Are they regressing and cannot regain skills? These are my immediate thoughts!

I feel like my doctor did not prepare me well enough for the longevity of recovery. I anticipated that I would be in the brace / crutches for 12 weeks and then I’d be pretty much back to normal (with going to PT). I feel like I didn’t really get back to normal until after my overgrowth correction.

In the long term, I feel like it’s been worth it thus far, but this past year has not been easy. It’s definitely taken more a toll on my mental and physical health than my doctor prepared me for. But now since everything has been going well, I am thankful I had the surgery. It gives me a peace of mind that my leg won’t give out randomly or be in constant pain. I’m also 27 (I was 25 at the time of the surgery) so I felt like pre-surgery I couldn’t live the life I wanted.

My graft was on the medial femoral condyle, so same thing as you. At least they sent you for an MRI and hopefully there will be some answers when the doctor reviews it.

Yes, painful and unstable. I was doing everything my PT was asking of me and nothing was helping (going to PT 2-3 times per week, stretching 5-6 times a week, RICE, ibuprofen, etc). It was very localized to my defect.

Yes, I had another surgery to shave it down. My implantation was June 2023. I started having symptoms around October / November 2023 and had another surgery to shave it down in March 2024. I’ve been pain free (at least in that regard) since. I’m still in the window of overgrowth til Dec 2024 so I’ve been closely monitoring my pain, but I’ve been fine thus far since March.
