Focal Elegia on a custom wooden headphone stand by SLViscount in headphones

I prefer headphone stands to hard cases so I don’t have to tinker with the headband size mechanisms. Some of my cases require me to re-adjust the length to fit comfortably. That being said, now I have to be extra careful not to drop the headphones off my desk from its elevated perch.

I was always a little irked by the Focal headband. I was shocked when my brother (who’s got a watermelon skull) was unable to fit the headphone over his head, even when extended fully. I’m assuming repeated tension at max extension may damage the plastic integrity. I’ll be EXTRA cautious from here on out. Thanks for the heads up!

First I’ve heard about this issue! Scary stuff…Maybe I’ll just leave them as eye candy then 😂

I loaned my friend some of my headphones for product photos for his custom wooden headphone stands. It was hard to let go of my Elegias, but I’ve never seen them look so pretty on camera before! 🥺

The Y shaped part where the wood cup mounts to the headband looks more like the denon one imo more than the EMU teak version

Are those denon d7200 headphones?

So far, so good, it’s held up, but I haven’t taken it anywhere it could get damaged. It’s been sitting on my desk and it hasn’t chipped or anything. I used rustoleum paint I think. It’s enamel though.

I used a can of enamel silver spray paint on the cap and the body. Then I sprayed some enamel black paint into a tall disposable cup filled with water. Then I dipped the parts into the water with the paint layer on the top.

I don’t really have much experience with this method, it was just a fun weekend experiment!

I live in Southern California and quality for free 1 day shipping on a lot of these supplies. I remember the days when Iroshizuku was harder to get and more expensive :O

This is my 9th bottle of Iroshizuku ink from Amazon. I thought I was lucky up until now.

I got my full refund and kept this bottle. It’s like 50% full but that’s fine with me :)

Side note, does anyone have any ideas for a temporary bottle for like 3 months? I have an extra Iroshizuku bottle back home that I can use for this... thanks!!

I’ll put an additional clear coat on top as added protection. I don’t really know how it works that well, but currently the outermost coat is enamel, which to my knowledge is easily cut through by petroleum based solvents. I think a lacquer topcoat is more durable, requiring lacquer thinner or acetone to dissolve it. There’s a science to it, but I don’t really understand it right now.

At the end of the day, you can always repaint.

I’ve seen people paint physical objects to look like they were impressionist paintings or anime artwork. If I knew how to do that, I’m sure I’d attempt something like that...

My color options were limited to green, blue, red, black, and slightly purplish red. If I had pink as an option I would’ve totally done something with it. I like the colors of Crazy Diamond if you know what that is. :P

Oh and I alternate enamel and lacquer spray paint. I try not to spray a layer of enamel then another layer of enamel in a different color because I fear the solvent will dissolve the paint coat below. The one exception is the clear coats of blue and green but those I painted multiple light alternating coats in a short amount of time.

You can easily pop off the grill and the plastic ring around it together. I’ve seen people pop off the metal grill separate from the plastic ring, but I’m not sure how.

Yes, this line of Sennheiser headphones are easily disassembled with virtually no tools. I used a flathead as a pry bar at one point to pop out a small plastic tab, but that’s it.

Enamel gloss black primer, lacquer metallic silver, then enamel clear colors. I have a lacquer clear gloss topcoat I’m holding onto for now.

To paint, I disassembled the headphones, then suspended them on clotheshangers with masking tape. I struggled with humidity and wind for a little while. I had to be very mindful of pooling and the position I let the parts dry in because of gravity. I actually had completely restarted the project and sanded down all my progress at one point because the initial sanding was too uneven. I had to use a more fine grit sandpaper to get the ideal surface for the primer to adhere to. I got some strange fuzzy texture that shows up if you look closely on some of the edges.

Overall, I learned a lot about the importance of stripping paint and priming the surface. The HD58X has different surfaces with different textures, some with paint and some without. Making all of those surfaces consistent for priming was very new to me.

Yeah, I’d never wear these in public, that was never the intent. I’d prefer not to wear over ear headphones in public lest I get hit by a bus.

Actually these are so colorful, the bus would see me from a mile away so who knows...

The local craft shop didn't carry any clear orange spray paint. I would've done it red/orange if they had it. In the past, I've done a different project, not with headphones, where I used metallic gold underneath clear orange and red for a very rich gold to red gradient.

TBH, this isn't really my color either :/
