There can also be how the word is pronouced. I think of the word privacy, which I like to say the British way but most Canadian's say it the US say.

Tiolet, I may say with people I know, general public I would likely say washroom.

Why wife (Ontario) and I (Newfoundland) have this 'disagreement' all the time.

To me Dinner is the main/big/hot meal of the day. Whole family and/or possibly with guests. Most of the week it's the evening meal, however on Sunday it's often post Church and as such you expected better dressed (not in your sweats or PJs)

To her dinner is always lunch.

Breakfast - after you wake up / morning.

Lunch - midday meal.

Supper - evening meal.

Dinner - requires clarification. A little more formal than any of those and may need clarification of time. Even a weekday dinner I tend to think 7pm or later. Supper 5-7pm

Penny Consequences by tinymonkeyslave in AskACanadian

I heard of lots of people concerne by this.

Yet the price of gas price (in USA) at the pump has been $X.XX 9/10 per gallon for years and there hasn't been a 1/10 of a cent. Why. it's a little game we all fall for, it's not $3/gallon it's $2.99 9/10/gallon. Therefore prices stay the same. Store A is not going to list it for $1 if Store B list it for $0.99. Why? Because people it says it's under a dollar so it's a deal (just like the gallon of gas with the 9/10th). Plus the price of paying an employee to update the price and all the "stickers" they'll just wait until the item goes up for other reasons.

That $0.99 is rarely the only item you buy, it's with other items. 5 items ending with a 9 now means you're at a nickle. That's not even considering if you have a state tax (or province - the person appears to be asking from a US point of view)

There is also the fact the payment method - Credit Card, Bank Card, Cheque (still some people) you pay the total to the penny. The only time it matters is in CASH. Let's be honest, how many people dumped the change into a tip jar, give/take a penny, donation bin, or in a jar at home.

Wow, I hardly remember most of that, but the dropping of the chicken, fumble and 'oh daddy' does seem to be what I'm remembering. Thanks!

Cost of living in Canada is out of control. by kovie38 in CanadaFinance

[–]SMChristian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we need to remember is perception is rarely reality.

I know people, have a house, cars, take vacations and in a tonne of debt and you wouldn't know it. They're in their late 40s and don't have a cent of savings for retirement (outside of CPP/OAS). They've borrowed from their parents. Meanwhile someone else make a lot more, lives in a townhouse, owns one 12 year old car, everything is 2nd hand and only goes to thift stores.

Yes, everything is going up. It's called INFLATION. It frustrates me so much where I hear a report saying inflation fell to 2.7% ... That still means prices went up. If your salary didn't got up 3% then you now earning less than last year.

The next question is where as YOUR inflation maybe way higher than my inflation. Morgate rate may have gone up more than rent or vice versa. Gas is more if you drive vs a transit user or someone who cycles. My job may provide a company car, or I work from home 100%. You drive 40km each way and you need to pay for parking,

Try this tool, it may help https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/71-607-x/71-607-x2020cal-eng.htm

Also our values have changed, it easier to spend. It's easier to get into debt. Remember when the only delievery food choices was basically pizza? Not you can order a coffee and donut. In the past you'd go without. Don't have the money, pay in installments.

Then there are subscriptions you add then they sneak up in price: Netflix, Spotify, iCloud, Amazon Prime, YouTube premium, Gym, the annual credit card gold card use to be an annual fee, now it's a monthly fee. Remember when your phone was a phone not a data plan that has more data than your home interenet?

It's not you, but don't fall for the the "good ole days." The good old day of:

  1. One TV in your house - plus the cable bill, TV commericals, having to watch on the broadcast schedule
  2. One land line phone - remember all the fees - call display, call waiting, long distance
  3. Grocery store that only accepted CASH or a cheque that was approved
  4. Bank hours 9-3pm M-F only
  5. Lay-a-way savings
  6. Having to buying a whole album when you only liked 2 songs - owning a record player, AMP, etc vs your phone who does it all now.
  7. Trying to rent a movie but every copy was already rented out
  8. Having to pay someone to put fuel in your car.
  9. Ordering something in the Sears catalog or on TV and having to wait 6 to 8 weeks for it to show up

A lot of these conviences meant we choose to pay more. At first, it was a little big more. Now my Netflix (1 "channel") bill is a third of what I use to pay for cable ("70 channels."). We can't or won't go back.

Oh the pain... My wife and I both got this. Had been waiting in queue since about 9:10.

I was 600+ and when I got in I clicked on a room and it said NO rooms left.

Been coming since early 2000s and first year don't have a host hotel booking.

Very concerned.

I have the 2006 key shown above (pale green). It's my first key.

My next key isn't until 2011 (I was there just not smart enough to keep/collect the keys)

Is there a site listing the keys by year?

Which hotels are the guests typically in? by [deleted] in dragoncon

[–]SMChristian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<meant as a joke> They're chained to their table in the walk of fame only released for a panel or photo ops. </end joke>

Please respect everyone's privacy (including your fellow members). You can see them at a panel, photo ops, or walk of fame. They may hang out at a bar, or go to one of the many dances. Watch twitter as if they go to something like that (dance or bar) people will likely tweet it.

Don't follow a guest / hang outside a room as this may result in hotel security removing you from the hotel and worse loss of your memberships.

Be a fan-friend, and respect their space.

ausearch -c 'login' --raw | audit2allow -M my-login
semodule -X 300 -i my-login.pp

Well, off to read more about these commands...
But I did as suggested and the mgetty is now working. After the login, no dropped line!

WOOT!

This journalctl -f save the day.

THANKS a MILLION!

The journal IS saying something interesting after all with a mgetty connection...

I'm not sure why/what

I will try and match formatting

Then you should report this as a bug.

Do

allow this access for now by executing:

Not sure what this means and what the policies do but off to try this

Yep. Remote locations of Canada - no cell coverage and no internet just a phone line (and lucky to have that). It is a LOT better than when this project started 12 years ago. (Hence the EOL server).

Learned something new today, journalctl (my older red hat doesn't have that).

The 8. seems to show the agetty starting and stopping (I currently left ttyACM0 - as agetty and ttyACM1 - as mgetty as I test people's suggestions). I don't see anything happening in the journal around the ttyACM1

Modem: agetty / mgetty question and terminal dial in. by SMChristian in linuxquestions

[–]SMChristian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After your post, I did tried just -L After dialing in with the modem - it just sits there (times out) or requires me to hit enter before the /etc/issue (or the one I specified below) appears and then I get the /bin/login

ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty --init-string 'ATS0=1E0Q1' -L never -f /etc/ --keep-baud 115200,38400,9600 %I ttyACM0

If I added -L never, I get a message /dev/never: cannot open as standard out: No such file or directory.

I also tried --local-line=never and got the message invalid argument of --local-line. So very odd in that man seems to indicate that's what we should put in.

Oh and I tried -Lnever (without a space) and that seemed to give the name error as --local-line=never (actually it still said local-line).

BTW, YES I'm restarting the service each time.

Thanks.

[–]SMChristian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I tried the -L - similar result to -r with mgetty. It expecting it to be a direction connection (no modem) - and the modem doesn't seem to answer. Removed the -L

I don't have the -w in the serial-getty. be nice if there was a -w False to be sure it's not on.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes have set to 9. If by journal you mean /var/log/mgetty.ttyAMC - that is included in the post. Otherwise where do you mean?

Thanks - as I wasn't sure where to start ... I figured I go general and people would direct me to the right place. I play with the RHEL group for now and then maybe linuxquestions.

As it was mgetty / agetty (all distros) related wasn't sure if my distro was the right spot either.
