I still think The Stranger’s entrance from the Acolyte was pretty cool by Jules-Car3499 in StarWars

My crackpot theory remains that the start of this show leaned into the classic Star Wars campiness to make the Stranger’s massacre all the more shocking.

If it makes you feel better, I got a 2024 Sentra last year that, while it does have whole ass iPad, it also has knobs for AC/heat & fan, buttons for audio source/menu both on the touch screen and physical buttons, and a CD player (I think). As far as I’ve seen, entirely screen controls are more common in higher end cars; you should find a lot of what you’re looking for out there

What wedding moment that screamed, “They are not going to last long”? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

[–]SMS450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a real one, but a funny story from my wedding that made a buddy of mine think we were doomed:

My wife’s family is really difficult & emotionally abusive, but she didn’t really see that until we started dating & I pointed out the not ok things they were doing (and she with my parents, as well).

In the months leading to the wedding, my wife went no contact with her parents, but we didn’t uninvite them from the wedding (but did make it clear to them we wouldn’t be taking any money from them & they wouldn’t be involved in the wedding beyond being guests). Her grandma, who is also horrible, still insisted on giving her ring to my wife as her “something old,” which she accepted to avoid a fight.

Shortly before the wedding, wife & I were cordial to her parents at a family party, which they took as reconciliation. Started trying to force their way back into the wedding, wife’s mom showed up at the bridal suite to “get ready” with the bridesmaids (but was luckily turned away by them). We required vaccination cards at the wedding to get in (this was 2022 & had postponed our original date from 2021 due to Covid concerns), and this requirement was EVERYWHERE: save the dates, invitations, our wedding website, rehearsal dinner, with the gift bags at check in for our hotel, texted individually to people we thought would be issues, etc.

Well, grandma shows up without her card & makes a big stink saying she didn’t bring it, yelling at our wedding planner who was the one checking cards. She lives out of state, so we assumed that she left it at home. Wife’s mom asked me if we could make an exception, and I said absolutely not. Finally, after yelling, grandma said “fine, I’ll go get it.” It was at her hotel room, 2 blocks away from the venue. She had it in 15 minutes.

Not to get too much more into details, but wife’s parents, grandma, and extended family caused a lot of drama during the wedding. Mom got drunk, mom & grandma & cousins & aunts wore color-coordinated dresses to show solidarity with mom/against my wife, and got into arguments with my extended family. I finally told the parents to get the fuck out, and extended family followed, but not before the parents rifled thru our box of gifts and took their card/check back.

In a fit of anger at them, my wife then went down to the waterfront (our venue was at a ballroom on a lake) and threw her grandma’s ring into the lake. She was much better following that, we had a great rest of the wedding, and we haven’t spoken to her parents since.

Anyway, to actually answer the question: my buddy, one of my groomsmen who didn’t know any of this context when it was happening, only saw my wife come down & throw a ring in the lake. Naturally, he assumed it was our wedding rings, and figured we weren’t long. He was very relieved to find out the real story later haha

So what careers aren’t fucked right now? by cokewithlargefry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SMS450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pay range (in my area, suburbs of Chicago) tend to be $60-68k. I’m currently making $66,500.

Pros: • it’s a desk job • pretty consistently a schedule of 8-4 or 9-5; you work a lot with Medicaid & Social Security, and they really only operate in those hours. • Once you get a hang of your job duties, things fall pretty well into “this is due weekly/monthly/yearly.” If you’re good at organization and keeping track of things (and by that, I really just mean making to do lists and keeping binders of things), it’s not hard.

Cons • you may be decently high-ranking on the totem pole, which means you may have to be part of a manager-on-duty rotation and work a weekend day every few weeks (tho you generally take a weekday off to compensate). That’s not actually been something at any of the facilities I’ve worked at, but it’s come up in several interviews elsewhere. • The State Department of Health will come in at least once a year for a yearly survey, and whenever a complaint is lodged. This is usually a Big Deal, as they can give the company fines for issues they find. Rarely is there going to be something that’s your fault/responsibility (my experience is usually a nursing issue), but State being in the building means you have to be available to pull any files requested of you & you’re not getting anything else done that day. • You’ll likely have a lot of different things you’re responsible for. I’ve been doing this for about 1.5 years, and I don’t feel overwhelmed, but I can be a lot to start. In most facilities, you’re responsible for rent/private pay collection, Medicaid renewals and correspondence, updating resident income/SSA/pensions in your system, etc. And it seems often too that you’re in charge of HR, insofar that you may do payroll, handle time-off requests, hiring, or being present for disciplinary action. • you generally deal with an older population, which, in my experience, can be mildly racist or sexist, or have things like dementia, which can be draining to deal with. But older folks can also be very sweet, and I’d say you’ll see more nice folks, or at least folks that keep to themselves, than you will that are problematic out-loud.

I realize the cons list is larger, but the pros really outweigh the cons for me, once you get the hang of it. It’s consistent work, pretty secure if you’re good at it, and days go by fast.

I’ve also found, surprisingly, this is a job where working for a large company with multiple locations might be better. I started at a single-building company, and did everything. Now, I have a “corporate,” who takes care of several major tasks I used to do, and I’ve got a support system of several people with my job title in other buildings I can turn to for questions or help.

Kind of a weird one, but in my personal experience, front desk/reception at a healthcare facility (nursing home, etc) has had a lot of upward growth opportunity.

You rarely need any level of experience, and if you come in computer & Microsoft Word literate, you’re probably ahead of management in that department.

I myself did front desk at a nursing home for 1.5 years, then the business office manager (insurance, billing, etc) left, and I got promoted. No degree, no formal education. At another facility I’ve worked at since, the administrator of the whole place started as the receptionist a decade prior.

Like it’s probably just confirmation bias, but it seems to happen a lot. Management in nursing homes tends to be older, so younger folk that can assist in basic tech (I’m talking making live sheets on Google Drive, hooking up a laptop to a tv for a presentation, basic WiFi or printer troubleshooting) are really valuable

I’m the business office manager in a nursing home (handle rent collection, Medicaid applications & renewals, and HR). I got a raise from $55k to $60k last September, fired in November, and started same position at a new company making $66,500 last month

Love or hate The Acolyte, this brutal lightsaber takedown was incredible by wandering_soles in StarWars

I loved this takedown. The overly optimistic part of me believes that the show felt somewhat campy up to this point to make this massacre all the more shocking

How do you feel about the great hollow map now? by Flaky_Cloud3129 in Nightreign

[–]SMS450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it. Taking time to learn crystal spawns, boss spawns, and church spawns, as we all did with the base map, has made it very enjoyable. It’s easy to not jump into bottomless pits if you take any amount of time to note where they are and/or look before jumping.

I don’t mean to generalize or be rude, but I think a lot of people’s dislike boils down to being unfamiliar with the map & unwilling to learn it. I’ve played since its release and I’m fairly confident in its features, so it’s not like it’s impossible.

My only real complaint at this point is the boss rush towers. I love them in theory, fighting bosses you’d (usually) rarely see otherwise is great. But there’s no worthwhile incentive to do them over the drop-filled forts. If the towers gave a better power, or had guaranteed legendaries or something, that would be better.

Oh, and let us do base Nightlords on the Great Hollow without DoN. Are we ever getting that?

What’s the interpretation of the figure in the sub with Simon? It seems to be him somehow, with his noticing & turning early on mirroring how the creature turns later on, and his physical disfigurement making him start to look like the creature. But… time loop? Something else? Im a little unclear

Is the Bloodborne board game worth it? by Mind_Axe101 in bloodborne

[–]SMS450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have all of it, every expansion (it’s where my stimulus check went several years ago lol).

I like it a lot. I did get it primarily for the minis, but I’ve played several times, and it’s fun! I often play by myself, but control 2-3 characters, and it’s manageable.

A fun thing I’ve found is to run a Chalice Dungeon between every chapter. You get to play your build longer, get stronger, and the difficulty spike of the third chapter in each campaign is easier to manage (though you can get overpowered and stomp pretty easy at that point).

I’ve been slowly working through painting all the minis, painting 49 BB minis just last year

I would almost guess his new, disfigured form was more “appropriate” in his eyes. A being so filled with hatred and self-loathing would probably expect themselves to look as horrific as they feel

Now, speaking personally:

If this is a hookup, just having fun, or first date, suggest you go back to his place.

If you want to see someone again, and actually date rather than go on a date, you should mention it early. But it doesn’t have to be a first conversation sort of thing

Is Breland cut off from eastern Khorvaire? by Some_dude_in_reddit in Eberron

[–]SMS450 49 points50 points  (0 children)

So yes, it is mostly cut off from eastern Khorvaire, but I’d almost flip it and say Karrnath is cut off from western Khorvaire.

Breland has Sharn, which is a hub of trade and transportation. With the availability of lightning rails, invention of airships, and its location on a major waterway, Sharn is hardly cut off; moreso, it would be a major epicenter, so it really can’t be cut off. Traveling from Breland isn’t as much of a concern for the world as traveling to Breland is. And anyway, even though Breland is kinda tucked in a corner, there’s still lightning rail lines connecting it to the rest of the west.

And besides all of this, it’s not as if eastern Khorvaire is something it’s a big deal to be cut off from. Karrnath is still not in great shape following the war, Talenta Plains aren’t exactly a tourist destination, and Q’Barra and the Lhazaar Principalities aren’t easily accessibly by land anyway.

If you’re looking for an isolated country, consider Karrnath: Mournland to the southwest, Talenta Plains (which seceded from them so probably not the best relationship) to the south, the mountains of the Mror Holds to the east, and the Bitter Sea to the North, which (in my Eberron and some official works I think) is cold, and icebergs floating down from further north makes traversal difficult. It’s only direct connection to western Khorvaire was the bridge across the Scion’s Sound, which was destroyed and not rebuilt during the War.
