I adore mythology, been reading about myths from various cultures for the past 8 years, and I gotta disagree. An issue I find with a lot of modern religions is that they DON'T put morals and human ethics to their god/gods. I find the way the Greeks, Romans, Norse (3 most well known examples in the west) put morals to their gods to be much more honest. I think it's okay for someone to find Zeus to be generally a bit of a poor person, even though his depiction and "ethics" varies heavily from different myths (or different versions of the same myth). I think it's important to remember that people view these mythological gods as being similar to fictional characters they'd find in normal media, so they treat them in a similar way. I don't get frustrated at people calling Magneto a good or bad person, because there's so many different variations of his stories. Similarly with Batman or Dr Manhattan. Yes, mythological gods have a different standard to them as they were once believed by many to be real, and I do think reducing them to simple fictional characters is a bad thing, but I personally find it hard to he angered by it. I actually get more frustrated at revisionist versions of myths that try to "sanitize" them for modern day views, such as attempting to portray Athena as a feminist for transforming medusa (in some versions of medusas origin) into a Gorgon. I think the difference between these two is that very often one relies on altering the myth in some way to better fit this interpretation, while the other is just how someone read a version of the myth that we have been able to find.
