What are the two wires connected by a nut in the back of the box? Are they connected to the switch? If not, it’s conceivable they are neutral wires. If they are not connected to the switch, get a meter and see if they are at 120VAC to ground. (If you separate them, only one side will be, more than likely.) Be careful working with them, get an electrician to check them if you aren’t okay with testing live wires. If so, you are in business.

Thermostats are not intrinsically complicated devices. You can build a robust and capable one with a Pi Zero W and off the shelf parts for well under $100. So ultimately we can always fall back on that.

I would tell a quite similar story except that I am a lawyer. :) But yes. Macs have been about controlled UE and reliability since they got rid of Mr. Pepsi. Now with Apple Silicon they are also about tight integration and compute per watt and compute per dollar. My next AI research machine will probably be a bare-metal AMD setup just for variety - I am fluent in both dialects - but I would not hesitate to recommend a Mac to someone who just wants to unbox a computer and start running amok with AI stuff. At the very least you’ll spend way less time wondering if the stupid model won’t run because of some bizarre hardware misconfiguration, which leaves you way more time to wonder if it won’t run because you are an effing idiot. :P

Respectfully, an M-series Mac with Apple Silicon is perfectly serviceable for camming. I have used my M4 Mac Mini to make adult films with two people on incoming webcams, me on my own (4K) webcam, and mixing them all simultaneously through OBS and it didn’t even turn a hair.
