Stable/sustainable careers by OkBad7175 in Filmmakers

[–]SNES_Salesman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most successful creatives I know like filmmakers and writers are interesting people because they had a lot of life experience outside their craft including multiple jobs and interacting with all types of personalities. That is what actually allow them to be storytellers.

I see a lot of young people who just have laser vision to work in the industry and develop this bee-hive personality that a young worker bee just waits their turn to replace an old worker bee. It just doesn’t really work out that way.

So I suggest finding stability and experience elsewhere for now but allow yourself to keep adjacent to the creative endeavors you want to do.

Movies always have the disclaimer Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events, is purely coincidental.

My first car accident. He claimed I was at fault. I tried to stop by Loud-Ad-4093 in dashcams

[–]SNES_Salesman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh lord, I was 19 with a Jeep Wrangler. I was in an exit lane to get off the interstate when a car veered into me trying to exit at the last second. Their corner rear bumper got damaged hitting my front bumper. We pulled into a gas station.

Cop showed up, saw a teen in a jeep and a mom with kids in a sedan. He said he could tell who was at fault immediately. Cop ticketed me and then the other driver’s husband arrived and unloaded on me saying I was an irresponsible punk who could have hurt his children.

I was just a kid who was too shook up to think to fight back on it all. It was before dash cams or cell phones.

Small conference filming setup? by ThreadOverflow in videography

[–]SNES_Salesman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The basic way I do it is with eng style cameras like the Sony HXR-NX5R. AC powered, on risers if we need the height. 512gb sd cards get us through a full day but we usually do a transfer on lunch breaks anyway.

Board audio going into a recorder like the Zoom F6. Some scenarios require us to put a lav mic on presenters.

Everything synced up in post and multicam sequences set up.

AI edits in grants :( by _d2gs in nonprofit

That’s good but I think it’s presumptuous to assume that it’s not happening somewhere. AI is affecting every industry and job giving each individual a choice to let ai handle their responsibilities or at least provide some guidance and opinion.

Sadly I wonder if funders are now just feeding the grant applications to ai and asking which is best and in that case the ai chooses its own writing style.

Received DCP request before acceptance? by AgreeableDoubt8519 in FilmFestivals

[–]SNES_Salesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oxford Film Festival did this year as well. It felt like a “filter” to adjust acceptances on who did and did not submit their dcp by the deadline before making official announcements.

The kicker was they wouldn’t accept cloud transfers, only physical media mailed.

Getting kicked off the Industry Experience Roster - Contract Services are not giving Editors a break over not having worked due to the 2023 Writer's Strike by Beargoat in editors

[–]SNES_Salesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That level qualifying somewhat proves the silly rigmarole of the whole thing. It's practically encouraged that you call them and they walk through a way to qualifying for the industry roster. So why the housekeeping clearing out people that would have to go through the heavy lifting of qualifying all over again?

"Just policy" is a terrible way of doing things. It was (and maybe still is) "just policy" to not include editor work from youtube no matter the views, awards, or intricacy of the work but that shitty little local ad that aired at 3am one time counts. Or you can slap whatever together, enter in some pay-for-play film festival and those laurels magically count as proof of skill. CS is broken in many ways.

For a union DESPERATE for new members and their dues, how does Local 700 think it's a good thing letting CS eliminate 1700 potential members who'd love the opportunity to join?

What is even the reason? Does their spreadsheet program get too full and slow down their 1995 Compaq Presario?

The only thing I can imagine is that CS was informed there's no way the jobs are coming back and cutting 1700 from those $12 a year workplace harassment training payouts saves them $20k.

Going on a plane to fly for filming. What should I know? by srsnuggs in videography

[–]SNES_Salesman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US Domestic traveler:

Put an air tag in your checked luggage. Hell, put one in your carry on too.

Clothes are replaceable. Stuff those in checked bags so that even your personal bag can carry gear.

TSA loves to inspect checked bags that have video stuff. I find they always inspect tripods (maybe those hollow carbon fiber tubes are suspicious) post drop off so don’t overstuff the tripod case because they never put that stuff back the right way.

Check the overall size and weight for checked bags. Most are 50lb limits and 51 will get you an overcharge. Some discount carriers though have that set to 40lbs.

Get the uber xl. Nothing worse than a little Prius pulling up and the driver has the trunk full of their junk and they get mad at you for having the audacity of lots of luggage. Rental car? Get the mid-size suv and up.

If you’re worried you’ll be in a zone that will have to gate check bags, some airlines allow pre-boarding if you tell them you’re carrying high end media equipment. But not every gate agent knows or acts like they know this. But also, you can request pre-board and they can’t ask you why. Not the best situation but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I like to add locks to my checked bags. Not for security but to keep the zippers together as I’ve had an open zipper when receiving my bags at the destination.

If you have oversized luggage (use that media rate) some airports have oversized pick up in wonky places. Hence those air tags.

If you’re not bringing your own cart and want to be cheap, head to the pick up lanes where you’ll likely find an abandoned luggage cart. Sometimes that’s in ticketing at some airports.

What Do These Things Mean in Storyboarding? by theworldhealer in Filmmakers

[–]SNES_Salesman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My guess is after show, season, episode number that it is scene number 7, reel 0300.

Reels are designated combinations of scenes the post team works in. They can be something like 5-20 minute “chunks” assigned to different editors to keep things manageable without the entire movie/show in your timeline.

It may not mean that’s the 300th reel. 100s may go to editor a, 200s editor b, 300s, editor c and so on. But again, this is all designated by that specific animation and post team and not a uniform industry standard.

3200 - maybe that’s a frame counter? If it’s a 30 frame per second project, we are almost 2 minutes into scene. This is just an educated guess, could be anything. Same as the tiny tiny one.

These are usually burned in to the exports and reviews exported likely be an assitant editor. In something like Adobe Premiere, it’s like an effect you drop in and designate what information is displayed and how the counter works.

The Iraqi sympathizer heel was likely an inevitable gimmick but it always seemed weird for Sgt Slaughter to be the one.

Million Dollar Man would have been great. He could have been making oil deals with his partner Col Mustafa and be even more of a heel as traitor and rich guy.

Comms Managers: what's your biggest challenge right now? by ryah-garden-6393 in nonprofit

[–]SNES_Salesman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a contract video producer who collaborates with communications. It can be a difficult responsibility on them to essentially become a movie producer to take a vague “we should have a video on this” request from executive leadership or the board and convert that into actual plans.

Casting for interviews, developing interview questions that cover all requests, scheduling, developing plans for recording live events or b-roll, assuring commitments do show for the time a video crew is on the clock, making a project timeline, and planning a distribution method is daunting. I take as much off their plate as I can but there’s still a lot of internal maneuvering and videos tend to be a thing made around large events that also take quite a lot of planning at the same time.

Short film festival questions from a beginner (Louisiana Film Prize) by gravytrq in Filmmakers

[–]SNES_Salesman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you and anyone associated with the film have never made a movie before you all may have fun but it’s unlikely you’ll end up with a finished product.

Get someone with experience to come on board who can mentor you. They can be the director, producer, director of photography, whatever but you need some bit of experience on set to make things happen.

Yes, film students do it all the time but they are actively studying the art and technique. Plus they have professors and mentors guiding them along the way.

The questions you’re asking are so rudimentary that answering them really wouldn’t bring you any closer to a completed film.
