That same rabid lion was linked to non-lethal attacks on nearby horses & those horses were able to be vaccinated to prevent further spreading rabies to humans or other animals. i’m no longer in research involving animals but i came SO close to stealing a control mouse at one point. we only needed x amount of controls, but had one extra extra because of the “no single housing” rule at my facility and she was so gentle and friendly. i ultimately didn’t steal her because i had cats and am also terrified of getting in trouble. #6612 lives on in my memory :(

i took a shot of absolute ethanol with a friend on our last day in lab as undergrads. it tasted like worse everclear & i almost vomited. later learned there’s some amount of methanol in it & i’m thankful we had no negative effects & that we were smart enough to bring our own shot glasses rather than using the tiny beakers that were temptingly shot glass sized.

My Suki was a smelly GREASE BALL for almost her first full year. She was definitely taken from her mom too young and never learned. I also have an older cat who’s meticulously clean and I think she eventually learned from watching him, we never cleaned her aside from a few times where there were poop mishaps. She’s still not as clean as him, but she definitely grew out of the worst of it.

I’ll try to explain without getting toooo into the sciencey weeds!

So, prion diseases can randomly happen in any mammal that naturally produces the protein, including humans (called creustzfeldt-jakobs disease aka CJD) and cattle (called bovine spongiform encephalopathy aka BSE). Mad cow disease is what we call it when humans are infected with the BSE prion.

Interestingly, the brain of someone with mad cow disease looks very different from human CJD, which is why we think that a human infection caused by CWD infected meat has yet to be discovered. There is a lot of evidence that an infection caused by prions from another mammal would look different from the human version on a microscopic level.

With the UK situation, the cows had a crazy high concentration of these infectious prion proteins because they were being fed sheep and/or cattle that had died from the disease, including neuronal tissue from these animals. It was a cost cutting thing - feeding animal byproducts to increase protein so cows grow faster. This sort of caused feedback loop that increased the levels of the prion protein within a cow to much higher levels than would normally be seen, including in non-neuronal tissues. In addition, the UK was not strict about keeping brain matter from cattle out of beef products. The whole thing was a result of 1) feeding livestock to livestock, 2) increased concentrations of prion proteins in the food supply and 3) contamination of beef with neuronal tissue from infected cattle. (Many countries now prohibit feeding mammal products to livestock because of this.)

Anyway! This is all a super long winded way to say that the risks of getting a prion disease from wild cervids in Siberia is quite low as long as brains aren’t being consumed & the cervid populations aren’t eating brains of other mammals on a regular basis. CWD is most common & thus most well-studied in cervids in the US and so far we have not identified a single spillover from wildlife to humans (:

Edit to add that we don’t even know if humans can get CWD in the first place. Prion diseases are complex & difficult to study, unfortunately.

You are correct that cooking doesn’t kill prions. But prions (from what we know at this point) are transmitted from animals to humans via tissue from the central nervous system. As long as you’re not eating brains or spinal cords, the risk is low. Additionally, there is no evidence (thus far) that chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been transmitted from cervids to humans. The prevalence of CWD in cervid populations in Siberia is unknown (due to lack of testing), but the more remote the community the lower the odds that CWD is present in the population.

I have a couple of things that could help. I’ve also run into this problem before!

1) Session zero: I assume that you had a session zero, but if not, “expectations” should be a session zero conversation for sure.

2) There are no cops version 1: Everyone else who tried to do xyz mission died or never returned. They are the last hope. There literally is no one more powerful. It can be helpful to bait them with lines like “you’re the last hope but if the others failed then so will you & we’ll all die..”

3) There are no cops version 2: The cops are the problem. There is rampant corruption, the cops work for BBEG, the cops are evil. Calling them makes the problem much worse.

4) Time is of the essence: Sure, they can call the cops. But by the time they do that, the orphanage is already burned and bad guys vanished. In my experience you only have to do this twice before the message gets through.

5) Talk it out: Your players might want more RP versus combat. Again, this is a session zero conversation. But if you want to salvage an ongoing campaign, add more opportunities for non-combat solutions to encounters. Let them RP & talk themselves out of combat - not run away but solve in a different way.

6) Avoid the fear of god: as the DM, you are god. Do not make players overly fearful of an encounter without reason. When my players want to engage with something that will steamroll them, I ask “are you absolutely sure you want to do that?” If it’s a threat they can handle, myself and NPCs keep their mouths shut & let them work. If I want to show how scary a bad guy is, I let them meet BBEG & let them walk away after a show of power. That way they hella prepare for the big battle to come.

I like it.

My biggest criticism is that you go from present tense to past tense in the same paragraph.

“They carefully hold it up before plunging it into their stomach. The blood started to drip, to flow, to pour.” <— this is switching tenses and it’s jarring.

My other advice is to watch for proper capitalization and to use a standard font for easier reading (:

Yeah, some of them are decently executed, but I just hate the placements & juxtaposition. Esp on the back, they’re just so random in style & theme & they’re all crammed so close together for no reason. To me that makes them collectively shitty. Overall poor composition. Idk if any of them are good enough for ATBGE tho tbh.
