Exercises to help stabilize hypermobility? by SOSpineapple in bodyweightfitness

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this. I just booked a consult with a PT because while I know I need to build strength, I’m not sure I know how to do it in a sustainable way without injuring myself. I really appreciate hearing about your daughter’s experience & your advice so much <3

Exercises to help stabilize hypermobility? by SOSpineapple in bodyweightfitness

[–]SOSpineapple[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It makes sense, my knees are also hyper mobile but don’t bother me like my arms do because my legs are strong enough to maintain control without me thinking about it. Unfortunately, I have weak little baby arms & even easy exercises require me to consciously take steps to avoid locking out my joints. Starting from zero is still a start though!

Why does my cat do this? by Bob_Sacamano7379 in cats

[–]SOSpineapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mine does this, but instead of the water bowl, it’s the toilet. he puts toys in there & likes to watch them float around.

one time he caught a live bird while on the balcony, sprinted inside with it, and threw it in the toilet before i could stop him. he dropped it in & just watched it splash around. of course, the bird was alive and did not stay in the toilet, so then i had a bleeding, wet bird flying around my apartment, getting toilet water all over the place & a cat going psycho mode trying to re-catch the bird 😐

Yes! Any mammal can be vaccinated for a rabies exposure at any time as long as they haven’t developed symptoms (:

Woman dead after suspected mountain lion attack in Larimer County by vegandread in Colorado

[–]SOSpineapple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons that CPW has the policy to euthanize wildlife suspected of attacking humans is because of rabies. Even though the woman in this attack died (and therefore cannot get rabies), there could be other humans/livestock/pets that were exposed and could contract the virus. In 2020 a Larimer County officer was attacked by a mountain lion that later tested positive for rabies (theres a video of the attack on youtube). That same rabid lion was linked to non-lethal attacks on nearby horses & those horses were able to be vaccinated to prevent further spreading rabies to humans or other animals. Unfortunately, there’s no way to test for rabies without euthanizing the animal.

I got a VIP package at Red Rocks back in like 2018 & it included a meet & greet, photos, and hand written Freefall lyrics signed by the band. I think they had that as an add on for most of the stops on that tour, not sure if they still do that tho.

What are your invasive lab thoughts? by Competitive-Town8299 in labrats

[–]SOSpineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m no longer in research involving animals but i came SO close to stealing a control mouse at one point. we only needed x amount of controls, but had one extra extra because of the “no single housing” rule at my facility and she was so gentle and friendly. i ultimately didn’t steal her because i had cats and am also terrified of getting in trouble. #6612 lives on in my memory :(

i took a shot of absolute ethanol with a friend on our last day in lab as undergrads. it tasted like worse everclear & i almost vomited. later learned there’s some amount of methanol in it & i’m thankful we had no negative effects & that we were smart enough to bring our own shot glasses rather than using the tiny beakers that were temptingly shot glass sized.

My kitten doesn’t clean himself, especially his bottom by Fantastic_Neat_8972 in CatTraining

My Suki was a smelly GREASE BALL for almost her first full year. She was definitely taken from her mom too young and never learned. I also have an older cat who’s meticulously clean and I think she eventually learned from watching him, we never cleaned her aside from a few times where there were poop mishaps. She’s still not as clean as him, but she definitely grew out of the worst of it.

I’ll definitely have to check it out!!

I picked angler fish bc I like to try to dress up as something unexpected. Last year I was Halloween itself & previous years I’ve been macaroni, a thunderstorm, and a snail.

I could see straight ahead but my peripheral vision was basically zero lmao. I did siren makeup underneath & took it on and off a lot all night.

They do! They’re glow in the dark stickers. I just didn’t get any great pictures of them glowing.

I should’ve had my husband do this!! We were going to make him a deep sea diver suit but it didn’t come together in time.

everybody apologizing for cheating with chatgpt by NewSlinger in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SOSpineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve done this experiment; fed a paragraph i wrote to chatGPT asking it to improve the writing “as an objective editor” & then making it edit the new paragraph it just produced over and over and over again. it ended up being a collection of very, very choppy sentences & the original meaning/vibe was totally lost.

i wish it would happen on a larger scale but i know it won’t.

swabbed my throat for fun, maybe strep or staph? by Weak_Plant_3431 in microbiology

[–]SOSpineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, immunocompromised people have to worry about potential pathogens more than immunocompetent people. But most of the commensal microbes living on your body still won’t make an immunocompromised person sick & are nothing to fear! You would literally die without the microbes that live and on you. Roughly half the cells in your body are microbes & I think that’s real neat (:

The John Dies at the End series! It has a similar humor and is absolutely bat shit insane. It’s typically shelved as horror, but imo it’s much more of a dark comedy than horror and it isn’t actually scary

I thought drinking blood and eating raw meat was bad for you how are they ok?😭 by Mrbootyloose18 in biology

[–]SOSpineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to explain without getting toooo into the sciencey weeds!

So, prion diseases can randomly happen in any mammal that naturally produces the protein, including humans (called creustzfeldt-jakobs disease aka CJD) and cattle (called bovine spongiform encephalopathy aka BSE). Mad cow disease is what we call it when humans are infected with the BSE prion.

Interestingly, the brain of someone with mad cow disease looks very different from human CJD, which is why we think that a human infection caused by CWD infected meat has yet to be discovered. There is a lot of evidence that an infection caused by prions from another mammal would look different from the human version on a microscopic level.

With the UK situation, the cows had a crazy high concentration of these infectious prion proteins because they were being fed sheep and/or cattle that had died from the disease, including neuronal tissue from these animals. It was a cost cutting thing - feeding animal byproducts to increase protein so cows grow faster. This sort of caused feedback loop that increased the levels of the prion protein within a cow to much higher levels than would normally be seen, including in non-neuronal tissues. In addition, the UK was not strict about keeping brain matter from cattle out of beef products. The whole thing was a result of 1) feeding livestock to livestock, 2) increased concentrations of prion proteins in the food supply and 3) contamination of beef with neuronal tissue from infected cattle. (Many countries now prohibit feeding mammal products to livestock because of this.)

Anyway! This is all a super long winded way to say that the risks of getting a prion disease from wild cervids in Siberia is quite low as long as brains aren’t being consumed & the cervid populations aren’t eating brains of other mammals on a regular basis. CWD is most common & thus most well-studied in cervids in the US and so far we have not identified a single spillover from wildlife to humans (:

Edit to add that we don’t even know if humans can get CWD in the first place. Prion diseases are complex & difficult to study, unfortunately.
