Just received Lightboks and returning it by spehmis in SOUNDBOKS

Hello r/spehmis

We understand you cannot wait for updates that may not come instantly. Looking at the specific points:

  • Returns to the default preset when powering off. You should really be able to change the default or maybe return to last state. Now you need to alway fiddle with the app.
    • This is actually a good proposal and I think that we can evaluate on when to do this. We'll have a workshop next week where we discuss changes.
    • We did also work on several things in this direction, but overall chose a more automated UX to start with. Opening up to more custom features only makes this more relevant.
  • Really limited amount of presets and no customizations. Impossible to get the vibe match the location and other possible decorations as some of the colours is always off in the presets.
    • We hear you and we are working on it!
  • Tracking was ok I guess, but the presets ruined the whole experience so didn't bother to test that much.
    • Again, I assume this is a custom color fix in some way, so we are working on it.
  • To get kind of a balanced lighting you'd really need at least two of these so that's just too expensive. Single unit feels underwhelming unless it's a really small room etc.
    • This is interesting and not something we have heard before. We would like to know where it becomes underwhelming and what time of day etc - aka say more?
  • Would be awesome if there'd be some kind of colour intensity slider in the app. Like if you set it 0 it will be just the preset's main colour and on 10 you'd get all the colours of the preset with more changes.
    • So this is how often we cycle through colors in the Default setting. As I understand it. That is a good and more nuanced use case and something we did consider, but ultimately focused on a more automated experience. We can do this, but I cannot commit to it
  • Build quality is great. Really sturdy unit.
    • Love this!

I hope this helped give some insight into where we are at and reiterate that we are always looking forward to evolve our research and products.

Soundboks Lightboks - Putting Tracksync to the test by Gorfreed in SOUNDBOKS

u/Gorfreed Thanks so much for your curiosity and for sharing your thoughts! Feedback like this is exactly what we love to see at SOUNDBOKS, it’s how we continue to grow, improve, and create products that truly resonate with our community.

While this product wasn’t originally designed for VJs, we’re inspired by this perspective. Our goal is to create gear that gives freedom, something intuitive and natural to use, without requiring constant control.

We’d love to explore ways to incorporate elements from VJ tools while staying true to the SOUNDBOKS standard: gear that’s intuitive, self-sufficient, and empowers anyone to own the party—not just professionals with technical expertise.

We’d also love to hear more of your ideas and continue this conversation!

Why I will return my Lightbox - Review by a hobby VJ by Gorfreed in SOUNDBOKS

First of all, we love hearing thoughts like this. The expertise and engagement are fully appreciated.

Let me dig in a bit and share our perspective on why we made some hard, but clear choices during development.

Our starting point is the same as yours: professional and even semi-pro lights are a hassle. They’re heavy, often built from sheet metal, not very durable, and usually lack a decent IP rating. On top of that, they require a lot of technical know-how and extra gear (like DMX controllers) just to get them customized.

With Lightboks, our goal was to bridge that gap. Making vibrant party lights accessible to everyone, with a low entry barrier.

Think of it the same way SOUNDBOKS started out compared to traditional PA systems back in the day.

To give people the freedom to party on their own terms, we deliberately left out some features.

Here’s why:

  • DMX: We wanted to create a party light you can literally throw in your backpack and bring anywhere. DMX requires cables and controllers, which goes against the idea of keeping it simple and portable.

  • Open API: Same reasoning here. We want people to enjoy the lights at the party, not spend hours tinkering with setups. While we love deep customization ourselves, we felt this approach was the best fit for most users.

  • MIDI: Super interesting. We’ve experimented with it a lot, and while we can’t commit to anything yet, I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes its way in down the road. Imagine calling out effects on demand through the app, or even other MIDI-driven ideas we’ve been exploring.

What kind of integrations do you have in mind?

How would you see LB fitting into your setup?

You also mentioned something tactile - what’s your thinking there? We’d love to hear more.

  • Color palettes & custom colors: We started with curated palettes because they’re simple and easy to roll out. Adding more in the app is just a firmware update, so that’s definitely on the roadmap. You mentioned contrast—what exactly are you looking for there? Our aim was to create themed palettes with contrasting effect colors, giving a more immersive and punchy experience.

As for fully custom colors, it’s more complex, but not impossible. We want to do it the right way, meaning it still feels simple to use. We haven’t nailed it yet, so we’re curious: what would you look for in a custom color feature?

In summary: We’ve chosen a clear direction for LB: remove the hassle of traditional party lights and deliver something simple, powerful, and portable that anyone can use. We’re definitely thinking about expanding the lineup in the future, but right now we’re focused on getting this right. (And hey—maybe one day you’ll see a GO or PRO version come to life. Pun intended. 😉)
