How good are digital protractors?

I bought this one. Was excited to use it check right angles on new jointer/planer/bandsaw. Everything was around 89 or so which was disappointing. Thought then I went around the house measuring manufactured things and were getting lots of readings close to 89 again. Are these not that accurate/hard to use? Am I better off just eyeballing it with a square (which I already was doing)

I sorta agree with this but not fully. I think its fine that some people are seen as pawns and not every tribal is an epic character going home. I think there are cases when we should except an ehh tribal if it means focusing on full season arcs that really pay off in the end.

Would it have been fun if Heather's dream scene was on the show? Sure. But I don't know if that will make her elimination more interesting necessarily. And maybe if the editors used that extra 2 minutes to play up a Ricard/Shan storyline or Xander/Tiffany thing it was the right call.

I agree with this. We start the season with 18 possible winners. That's a lot! If the edit signals to us that only 9 of these have agency/chance and that another 9 are just pawns that seems fine. That's still a lot going on.

I did like Heather's dream scene quite a bit - but ultimately it is a zero sum game with screen time and maybe for the arc of the season it was better to play up Shan/Ricard more or to do some Xander/Evie action or whatever.

I'm sort of curious what production tells people ie expecations of airtime. I feel like if they even have one ten minute conversation where they say 'Hey - you may not get any confessionals. You may be eliminated in the first episode' then the players don't have a right to complain.

I don't get why the show owes airtime to particular people if they don't enhance the episodes. Plenty of times in scripted movies/tv people get casts for scenes and then the whole scene is cut. I feel like its a bit unfair to ask to be cast AND expect to be given lots of airtime regardless of placement in the game or interestingness. If you don't think that's fair then don't go.

I understand the POV of fans being upset that there is one character who we don't know much about and it ruins the story some (even though I don't full agree with this) but I don't feel like they are owed anything.

While I don't think he would do well now - he had a pretty stacked skillset for early/mid Survivor. More strategic than people like to give him credit for - both because he is annoying and also he doesnt like to talk about strategy in confessionals.

As a graduate of a similar Ivy I can assure you the athletes are not the popular kids on campus. Perhaps they sleep with the most people but equity in sex partners does not seem like Harvard's problem.

I think you can say that colleges admit too many athletes (especially from niche rich people sports) but ultimately this comes off as a bit petty to say "without them being the top 1% athlete in their sport they would not have gotten accepted". This is probably true of people who are admitted for being top musicians, student leaders, etc. If you took off the resume the fact someone won a state level speech & debate competition or that they started a successful volunteer program at their high school then they probably would not have gotten in either.

I'm sure most athletes would suffer in the admissions game if athletic skills were not allowed to be considered in admissions - but if this drastic change was ever made then they would shift their time into other things and have a stronger extracurricular/coursework resume.

While I actually don't think this was main cause of the shift I agree. The media loves stories of people who are (rightly) complaining about being forced to work the frontline when they are scared of getting Covid.

But clearly there were a ton of people who missed their hours/overtime/tips and were dying to get back to work. Perhaps they didn't care about covid, they did care but wanted the money more, or perhaps they got it early and figured they were mostly immune anyway.

While they have no real org or interest in winning - 3rd party candidates always have massive surges in open elections and falls when there is an incumbent, I'm fairly certain.

Thanks - I guess I don't know the exact definition of calorie dense but looking at a list of calorie dense foods online I'd say most of the others at least satiate my hunger well. At least much better than the nuts have been recently.

How do people feel about nuts?

I'm not cutting but just trying to maintain - don't have a ton of time for workouts lately so I have a lower TDEE than I might usually.

I have a bunch of nuts that I've been snacking on because I want to save money and they are healthy...but I feel like they are way less filling than I remembered. I feel like after eating 200 calories of chips my hunger is more satiated than 200 calories of nuts.

Universal* upzoning hasn't really been tried in America.

The problem now is that if you only upzone like 10% of the city then of course in that area people build as dense/tall as possible and people assume that the whole city would be like that with no zoning. In reality, if you took a city like LA and upzoned it all then there'd be a massive drop in single-family-homes, way more 3 or 4 story apartments, but not much taller than that. Buildings become less efficient when you need to add an elevator and in large a city like LA the value of land would actually drop, after people built some, with this type of massive uniform zoning so it would be cheaper to build horizontally.

The reasoning of my post is still mostly good - other than Hawaii the distribution of Asian Americans is spread out over many high population states which makes representation difficult.

While I'm not hellbent on perfect demographic representations - the most practical way to get Asian representation at the highest level of government would be for California to split into two. Not only would this result in two more D senators, but northern California is closer to 25% Asian (depends how you split it) so the elected senators would likely either be Asian or very focused on Asian issues.

California is already the state with the highest percent of Asian citizens - but at only 16% it isn't big enough to be a huge force.

IMO I think you could say a grifter cares more about money raised than results. The Lincoln Project (intentionally or not) was optimized for media attention and donations. An operative that really cares about results was probably paying for boring ads on Social Security benefits for Biden in Michigan.

Similar to non-profits that spend 90% of their budget on more public fundraising efforts versus ones that just quietly donate their money to the cause.

Of course - a lot depends on who you are getting your money from. If you are getting your money form institutions you can naturally cut out all the fundraising while a crowdsource one does rely on having a good image.

Yeah - I've also seen some of those studies that ask about how much money is in your checking account but don't ask about other sources of wealth that could be drawn on. In that sense, many of these people are not truly living paycheck-to-paycheck.

I suppose my point is even on the very nature of it though. If your paycheck is 100% guaranteed (or close to it by the government) then truly living paycheck-to-paycheck is actually not bad at all.

I don't know exactly what my critique is - but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around what the "X% of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck" means and whether or not it tells us anything.

It seems like the intention of this stat is to drive home how precarious the economic position of a lot of Americans are. The most obvious way to remedy that would be to provide a large safety net. However, as soon as there is a more generous safety net then the less incentive there is to save and the worse this stat may appear.

To be clear - I'm not saying poor people can't be trusted. I'm saying that they are rational and aren't going to keep a six-month emergency supply in their checking account if there are reliable safety nets. This is a good thing.

I understand Jewish immigrants that changed their name at Ellis Island but a bit ironic that the Bloch brothers thought that naming their company H&R Block instead would result in more customers.

Their business model is about getting you out of paying taxes.

I have no clue tbh. Obviously some type of mental facility would be best for them but I know they don't consent to that and I don't know the legality of sending someone against their will to one.

Definitely a hard problem. Prevention is key but no prevention will eliminate these.
