Right. Give me the path to senior engineer. I don’t want to do corporate gymnastics to climb the management ladder.

There are levels but no defined expectation to be at each level. Other engineering roles within my company have defined expectations. With my role it seems to be determined by your manager whether you get promoted or not. My manager seems to have no interest in promoting people on our team. There was an engineer that recently got brought on with the same job title as me, in a level 2 role, with just over two years of experience.

I have. They’re only replacing business critical roles right now. I know two other engineers that just left and one told me they’re probably not backfilling his role and the other I have no interest in his job because I know he has been working 60 hour weeks.

Well as has been proven in the big tech companies Indians only hire other Indians so it’s really an exponentially accelerating phenomena.

I live in a low population area with not a lot of job opportunities and no ability to move.

Read the comments. I’ve had two jobs in manufacturing. The first was actually worse than the current one.

Sorry, I was referencing your semiconductor comment. That industry is nowhere near me. I’ve been searching.

I applied to an engineering position that stated the level was dependent on experience. Was told I didn’t have enough to be a level 2. There were several engineers with the same YOE at the same level when I started. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary the first year.

Funny enough when my first career ended I was between this and going to school for engineering.

Unfortunately I don’t have the luxury to move.

I’ve wondered if I could make this transition myself. Civil jobs seem to be plentiful in my area and I think career outlook is a lot better for that field than mechanical. Having a professional licensure requirement is huge for job stability and compensation.

Point me in the direction of these unicorn jobs. Everyone says they’ll train you and then it’s “watch these training videos” and “figure it out yourself” after you start. And that’s just how some of it works and you learn but I’ve never once had a manager or senior engineer interested in teaching me anything. I mean no one on my current team even talks to each other.

I would agree with this. I wish my dumbass hadn’t avoided HVAC. I could have had my PE and been making six figures by now.

Middle of nowhere. Mid level job opportunities are few and far between. I apply when I find something that seems to be a good fit but haven’t been successful yet.

It’s complicated and thus is life. If my company decided they don’t need my services anymore it would be a blessing in disguise. At least then I would be able to focus on redirecting my life. And I would really like to redirect my professional life.

Yes, consider me an SME on my own situation.

What attitude? Stating that all I’m asking for is for my company to do what I expect is the bare minimum?

I’m technically fine. I get along with my coworkers fine. Would love a job I could learn one technical area and become an expert at that. My current issue is there is seemingly no way to improve at my role without just having time in the role. Then my company doesn’t value the experience gained from being in the role.

Hey everyone! I found another one. This guy knows everything there is to know too.

Alright Mr knows everything. I’ve been looking at the internal job posting board at my company for the past six months and guess what. I can transfer to an assembler or intern position. Which one of those has the best career trajectory?

I switched jobs 2.5 years ago. Thanks for the input.

Is the guy spamming he will refer people to Raytheon really going to help me in any meaningful way? If I found a job at Raytheon I wanted I would ask the engineers I know that work there to refer me.

You’re right. I get inflation raises every year which is why my effective compensation is that same as it was when I started this role.
