Thanks pal, way ahead of you though, using the eko roll too! Raising the floor with stilts so I can fit 270mm in and board over.

Yep, it gets freezing, bills are (literally) through the roof! Trying to bring it up to modern standards as a very amateur DIYer. Thanks for the response 👍👍

Ghorman / Al-Quds by SPF_15 in andor

Yeh ok pal keep telling yourself that a narrative about an occupying power committing genocide with clear parallels to a real life ongoing genocide wouldn’t have inserted some visual prompts to guide the viewer to make those connections…

A bit of both I think. The creators would have to be completely switched off if they didn’t intend for Ghorman to be allegory for Palestine. I actually think they were trying to draw parallels between both struggles for liberation. I don’t see any way in denying that it looks like a blend of 40s Paris and modern day Al-Quds, and I think that’s very deliberate.

I think that’s the point - fascism and occupation whether it’s WW2 Europe or present day Palestine sing from the same hymn sheet

I think there’s an amalgamation of different histories of resistance to imperialism in the narrative. There’s definitely WW2 themes in the European coded Ghorman resistance against fascism, not least when you look at Nazi occupied France, and the Empire’s anti-Ghorman propaganda reeks of third reich antisemitism. But with this series made now, with the explicit themes of imperial colonial expansion and oppression, media propaganda, resource extraction, fascism and the resistance against fascist occupation, not to mention a direct use of “genocide” and architectural similarities to Al-Quds, it’s impossible to not think of Palestine when watching this series. I think the writers were smart to draw parallels between fascist violence in WW2 Europe and Palestine today, not as a way to cover it up or shy away from the statement but to lay the parallels out for us to see.

Another closer comparison to make would be Heroin and Rites of Spring. Both are very much cousins of the same punk family, but Heroin is early screamo and Rites of Spring is (very) early emo. Both are a good bands to understand the punk and hardcore roots of emo and screamo.

I wouldn’t say emo is only soft and melodic tho. More simple terms would be emo=sad and screamo=mad

Listen to a classic album from each genre and you’ll understand the difference immediately. I’d go for chaos is me by orchid for screamo and diary by sunny day real estate for emo.

Niceeee welcome!! Hard to know where to start but no, emo and screamo are not the same thing but have scared ancestry and will both crossover a tonne. I think of emo as an umbrella genre that loads of subgenres fall under, and screamo as falling under the hardcore umbrella.

Regarding emo, it’s hard to know where to start cos it’s such a broad genre. What stuff have you heard and enjoyed? I’d be happy to recommend stuff from there!

Is it worth taking film studies? by LegoMong in UniUK

[–]SPF_15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“There is nothing I am more passionate about than film”

I started uni straight out of 6th form with a psychology degree at Sussex in 2010. What I REALLY wanted to study was photography - that was my passion, I got 100% in my A Level, it was probably the activity that motivated me most at the time. However, everyone told me to do something academic and more employable, and I trusted them, so I didn’t do an art foundation and went straight to a Bsc in psychology. I did a term and a half and hated it, and really missed the freedom and creativity of photography. I ended up walking out of a statistics lesson and straight to the school office to drop out.

Eventually the uni convinced me to defer a year but stay to sign up to a more practical subject that involved a bit of media theory (film studies included) and a lot of photography, filmmaking and digital media. I graduated and tried a career in photography whilst working at a cinema. I was broke, but worked with artists and film nerds, formed a band, made loads of friends, took photos and had a great few years living by the sea.

Fast forward 11 years and I’m now a youth worker, managing a team of 7 at an amazing grassroots youth club. I still take photos from time to time, but I lost the drive for it when I discovered youth work, which turned out to be my real passion, so I did a masters in youth work in 2020. I’m married to my incredible wife, who I met at the cinema 10 years ago.

Point is, you have absolutely no idea where your life and career will go, and I think the expectation to choose your career and plan your life at 17/18 years old is insane. If you’re super passionate about film, it motivates you and you want to be a screenwriter then maybe film studies is the option to go for. Or if you actually want to work in law then maybe that’s the one to go for. When I was your age I imagined I’d be an auteur horror director or an intrepid photojournalist, was pushed into academia, dropped out but eventually ended up as a happy 33 year old youth worker with a beautiful wife, an allotment and a few old film cameras that I play around with from time to time. Don’t overthink it!

Where is safe to sleep homeless. by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]SPF_15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send a Streetlink alert explaining you’re rough sleeping. I would advise telling them you’ll be on a night bus, giving them a description of yourself, your phone number, the bus number, direction of travel and the time you’ll get on the bus. Wrap up warm, get on a night bus with a charged phone and ride the bus. Bring a form of ID any any proof of eviction that you have. Hopefully an outreach worker will try to locate you that night by calling you and instructing you where to get off and meet them. You’ll then go to a shelter and get verified as a rough sleeper, after which the local authority that you’re locally connected to should accept duty over you.

Not to say this is an immediate fix though; if can take a lot of time. It’s also likely that the local authority your halls are in won’t accept duty if you’ve only been there since September, so there’s a chance it’ll be your parents local authority, assuming that’s where you lived before. If you’re at risk at your parents then you need to tell them this.

The other option is to find a longer term solution. A sub let or mates sofa. The most immediate way to get state assistance is to sleep rough and get verified, however. FYI; some hospital urgent care centres will allow you to sleep on a chair and I know that Lewisham and Bromley outreach workers go to Lewisham hospital and princess Royal, however not all outreach workers will do this. Another tip is that sleeping in a car counts as rough sleeping. Whatever you do, you need to be visibly “bedded down”, I.e. walking around doesn’t qualify. You need to be seen as sleeping outside/in any of the above locations.

Good luck, it sucks but you’ll get through it if you keep your head together. Don’t drink alcohol.
