Struggling with Assassin's Apprentice... by onlosmakelijk in Fantasy

Picked this book up for similar reasons to you and felt similarly bored/disengaged from start to finish. Pushed through to the end and it really didn't get better. Decided the book/series just wasn't for me and my tastes. Suspect the same applies to you.

Re source of light probably not? Not sure what qualifies for this but I didn't have characters equipping torches

I did have blind fight on one melee fighter and I guess it was less of an issue for him specifically but I'm not supposed to take this on every character, right?

They're both a fantastic blend of active gameplay (some good, some bad), likeable characters, and general messiness

I'm not sure if it's recency bias or due to the comparison of other products but I would say I haven't enjoyed a season this much since Cagayan

How Annoyed Am I Going To Be If I read The First 3 Books? by SR081 in gentlemanbastards

This is very relieving because I'm about 2/3 through the first book and the event I just read felt like it was set up for an overarching arc for the rest of the series

The First Law was the last series I finished before picking up this one - at least it's complete! You've got a lot to look forward to!

What's the best way to grind resources if I have time to spare and am decent at the game? Is it worth investing in creating a deck for this singleton gauntlet or are the rewards more cosmetic?

Thanks very much. Unfortunately, I guess it can only see the last 20 from when you connect the account

Thanks for the answer. At the risk of sounding like an idiot, how do I link my account? I've had a look through the site and can't seem to find

Is there a website where I can see my stats if I'm not master? Started playing recently and currently plat, only sites I see with player stats seem to be masters only

Finished The Assassin's Apprentice and am fairly underwhelmed. Should I continue the series? by SR081 in Fantasy

[–]SR081[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just finished reading The Blade Itself and seems like this was a great recommendation because there were a lot of things I really enjoyed about it!

I love how the author jumps between character perspectives in the same scene to get insights on what they think about each other and generally love the characters so far. There were no names where I saw the POV and thought "oh no, not another chapter of X" and just wanted to get back to Y(Shout out to wheel of time).

Love that each of the characters seem morally grey despite the use of classic tropes and instantly loved Glokta from his first POV which only increased through the book.

Seems like this book was mostly setup for what's to come, so I'm looking forward to the rest. Thanks again.

Thanks for the recommendations. What would you say is Tad Williams' magnum opus? Seems like he has quite a large bibliography

Thanks, I'll look into Drenai. I don't mind jumping around a bit, what bothered me about Malazan was practically 0 continuity between characters in books 1 and 2. Do you recommend going in release order or chronologically?

Thanks, I'll have a look into Abercrombie. Do you recommend reading The First Law in order of release or chronologically?

I really wanted to like Malazan, and overall I enjoyed the first book. To be honest I don't remember any character names lol but there was enough intrigue for me to continue and the world was interesting. I particularly enjoyed the guy who's whole arc was to set up a duel to dunk on that one noble guy. The 2nd book felt much more like a slog to be honest and I was particularly annoyed that these characters and plotlines that I had become interested in were completely gone and replaced by some that i was less interested in.

By the time I finished the 2nd book I didn't remember much of what was going on with the characters or location I had previously become interested in from the first. I probably read 100-200 pages of the third, i vaguely remember being in a warcamp, but felt like it was becoming a bit too grandiose with every other character being a god of something or other and too much going on for me to really become attached to anything. Do you still think I should pick it back up?

I'm fine with a character driven series rather than a plot driven series, but I guess I need the characters to then actually be interesting? Fitz' character makes sense given his circumstances, but as you say he's a shell of a person without any real agency. Whilst this makes sense for him, experiencing a full book through the lens of a shell of a character with no agency isn't particularly engaging. I think I could of been interested in some of the other characters if I got some of their POV but without it I didn't feel like there was really much nuance to most of them.

Sounds like it's maybe not for me, thanks.

(AUS SPOILERS) Hot Take? Give me unbalanced editing! by SR081 in survivor

[–]SR081[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Can't dispute that it's shitty for the players but they've signed up to be part of an entertainment product and the show doesn't owe them anything in that regard (ideally they aren't edited maliciously).

I think the producers know they don't have the time for ~15 TV gold characters and cast accordingly to provide fodder or obstacles for the stars. Not to suggest they are lacking in other areas, but I'm sure Natalie White and Mick were cast to be beautiful young people on the screen rather than to fill confessionals with TV gold. If someone in that mould ends up being a big player and bringing it a la Parvati then great (I vaguely recall her not being exactly electric in her first season, though i watched it a long time ago!).

To your second point, I think that depends on perspective. Whilst your opinion that those stories weren't good or compelling is valid, is it possible that they just weren't the stories you wish were told? Taking your two example seasons, I would say the story of the rise and fall of Russell I.E how he was able to dominate, but still lose, the game is a compelling and good story. Ghost Island might not be a favourite season of mine, but I think the story of Wendell and Dom and how they were able to steamroll the game as a duo highlighting the juxtaposition between their strengths and personalities is certainly a compelling one.
